the gym next to me is close to leveling up and i want to leave a pokemon. however, the guards are 1200 cp, and my highest is like 600. if i fight and lose, how many battles will it take to level up the prestige by about 200?

edit: its zero XP if you lose... =(

Just got the game last night and the first pokemon I catch is a Dragonite lol. I've never seen one with such low strength starting when looking online, either. CP48

Seems to me this game might not be very new player friendly? If since Gym pokemons will have astronomical strength compared to you if you join late

It's incredibly new player friendly, as the attacker's advantage anyone has going against a gym is massive.

I live in a section of my county that is "historic" with a bunch of old buildings, churches, ect. I've got pokestops and gyms all around me.

I wish I hadn't found this. I've told a couple folks its "so I can explain it to my 3-year old".

After around level 20 or so, levelling up slows down enough that newer players can catch up pretty quickly. Plus the fact that gyms might only have 1-3 Pokemon defending against all 6 attacking...

It seems every church is a pokestop. I live in an LA suburb and didn't realize how many different churches of different religions there are in my area. It's not a "historic" area at all.

gyms play an infinitesimal part in the game, honestly. the XP earned from gyms doesnt really add that much value compared to just running around. when i am around lvl 20, i am going to kick the little punk kids of of my neighborhood though. i see them sitting on the park benches at night.

edit: by the way, the gym at my work, which was defended by two 1200+ cp characters was just taken over by another team. two of the three current defenders are below 500, and the highest is 1050. so, attacker's advantage.

Low players can still contribute at gyms, because all you need to lower the pretige of a gym is to take down a single pokemon, which isn't too hard with 6. In all high level gyms that I've seen, the first few pokemon are quite low since it's very difficult to raise the level of a gym with only high level pokemon.

Am I missing something about this game? I get the appeal of running around like a lunatic in search of finding pokemon and taking over Gyms but this game just strikes me as missed potential. Aside from catching the Pokemon element, this game hardly resembles the source material and misses the mark on almost everything that makes Pokemon cool.

Keep in mind that the Pokemon used to defeat gym trainers can be much stronger than the ones left behind after taking over the gym. There's no way of knowing if those 500 level Pokemon were used in the fight at all (it could have been 1500 level Pokemon to quickly wreck the 1200 level defenders, and then the new gym trainers could have left behind weaker Pokemon).

Literraly have no idea what the supposed fun in this game is. Walk around, throw a dumb ball on a pokemon in a boring minigame. I don't even think the 12 year old me (who was a big pokeman fan) would be enjoying that.

the fun part of the game really is the social and pseudo-geocaching part, if this were a standard cell phone game it would suck balls, but i'm still finding myself enjoying it.

i thought this was so dumb until i started playing it, its value is as a medium to interact with people. If you've played the geocaching game or ingress it is just like a pokemon skin
