I think it should be pretty established that popular and best-selling does not equal quality. This is true especially in games, with games like Watchdogs breaking records while being amazingly mediocre.

Which means that SC1 would have sold anywhere between 5 and 8 million copies. I have very a hard time believing that, especially since that game was incredibly easy to pirate.

If you want to compare BW and GG or SC2 and GG do so, but BW vs SC2 is irrelevant for this topic.

Than watch him play: http://www.twitch.tv/bikerush And you can "find reasons to hate it" even before, if you really wish.

As of right now the game does not have a price on Steam. http://store.steampowered.com/app/290790/ on the other hand the developer claims you must have the steam client installed to play the game. a CM a couple of days ago said the game would be $50 USD. Petroglyph/GreyBox doesn't seem very organized. Not nailing down pricing details like this until the very last minute is a bad sign.

I dont know how organized they are / will be , sure they aint as big as blizzard but Im down for RTS man ! we need more of this !!! they tweeted that support for replays and obs mode is coming , e-sport features are coming and so far they really listen to community on the forums , not that bullshit PR we hear all the time. the devs are aware that from the get go , the community is formed of rts players from other games , its all over the forums , if they play their cards right , they will have something on their hands.

And $50 = dead game. There is no way an unproven IP with no hype this close to launch should be expected to develop a large community. F2P isn't the only viable business model but it's what's working out for most companies for good reason. Make your own market. Especially a genre so widely perceived as hardcore and hard to get into so the $50 price-point seems like just an unnecessarily huge barrier to entry to a game looked upon with high walls already. Not to mention the defocus on micro which is considered a staple of the genre in competitive terms. I'll keep an eye out on this since I'm a fan of RTS's more or less but I would not bet on this game getting big.

why does every RTS have to be an esports title? There is simply no reason. F2P in an RTS seriously? What do you want them to do, demand 2$ each time you build a specific unit? In the end esports adventures are money sinks. That might be no problem for giants like Blizzards but smaller studios will struggle.

F2P in an RTS is easy (not to implement but as a concept you should be able to wrap your head around). Do you think RTS's are that different from MOBAs that they can't share aspects of a business model in terms of cosmetics and other items?

If you just wanted a single player campaign with light multiplayer there are already plenty of RTS's which can fill that space. F2P in an RTS is easy (not to implement but as a concept you should be able to wrap your head around). Do you think RTS's are that different from MOBAs that they can't share aspects of a business model in terms of cosmetics and other items? it's called the games industry that's what people do all the time. and purely cosmetic F2P model does not work unless you are Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 which already had an established crowd of players that came from the mods that these games were based on. So what you'd end up with is splitting up your playerbase through the shop items or stuff like the C&C Generals F2P game tried where they wanted to sell you potentially game breaking generals. so no thanks F2P can go fuck itself, give me a well made 50$ game anytime over a F2P moneygrab. and the developer doesnt need a pedigree, when the reviews for the game are good i will buy if they are not I wont. That's how you should make decisions about buying games and not demand that the developer lets you play for free. RTS are a niche market and will never be able to sustain a F2P model that does not promote pay2win elements.
