Personally I really dislike all these newer RTS games that feel "cumbersome", I prefer crisp reactions and unrealistic turn cycles etc, like StarCraft and the older CnC games (more for ground, air is arguably better with this). Yes, it's more about taking and holding resources than about winning battles. But if you want starcraft, just play starcraft. Very understandable to want to do that, but if starcraft is what I want, there's no need for a new RTS.

What he said was that he wanted to play an RTS with specific features that also happens to be parts of Starcraft. But Starcraft is a lot of other things as well, which he may not like. For instance there isn't a single RTS game that can be considered easy-to-learn while still having responsive and fast moving units. There is also no RTS game that focusses on creating great micro interactions while cutting all of the unncesary stuff away, which is ironic since this is what the majority of the gamers actually want.

In sc2 you can click on a building/unit and you see all of the hotkeys written. In Grey Goo, i think you had to press the first part of a hotkey combination to see the future parts, so there was some awkward back and forth when trying to figure out what to press. If you're playing 50 games a week it seems like one of the better systems, overall.

It's basically put in blocks q - w - e - r - t and then within those blocks it's again q - w - e - r - t etc. Shouldn't be hard to remember. And if you press q you get to see all the icons, which displays all the hotkey combinations. And if you don't want to remember stuff just click the icons I guess...

For sc2 for example, if you have the unit/building selected that you want, you can see the hotkey for every single command that you can give for it. For a factory in grey goo, you might have to hit qq and then see what q, w, e etc does. You won't be able to see the command on the third lair unless you already go 2 lairs down by pressing the hotkeys, so you have to bounce up/down lairs a lot unless you remember the commands like qqe for everything that you want to do.

Either way... what a non-issue. It's not about it being an problem with the game, we're discussing differences. I don't know why you seem to take offense to literally everything. IIRC you do have to go three hotkeys deep for commands, so if you don't know where a command is (because you have not played much) you might have to check around by hitting escape to jump back after pressing the wrong hotkey. With sc2 style, you don't have to jump in and out of hotkey selections, just look over at the command card and it'll have a letter like "b" on the ability. That's why i'd say it's less easy to use without muscle memory but it's very convenient once you can hit all of the hotkeys without having to check any of them
