The game is incredibly frustrating to play at sub 30 fps, and after this last patch that's what I'm playing at. It's probably the fact I also updated my nVidia driver that released YESTERDAY that was supposed to be FOR the Overwatch beta, but ended up killing my performance (was 45-60).
It's also apparently just not meant to be played below 1080 resolution.
|
Got to try this game, I complained about the $40-60 pricepoint before but now that I've had my hands on it I can say it doesn't feel like it should cost $60, without a single player component, but for $40 this is pretty great. I can only play Tracer and Reaper properly... looks like my CSGO Global doesn't transfer well to this game, I'm bad at Widowmaker. And I have no interest in the tanky types.

D.va has been pretty fun for me. I've also tried other ehroes but her, Tracer and soldier 76 are the ones I've had the most success with. Oh and Mercy but that's harder to gauge.
The only thing I don't like so far is that no matter what cool play you do, there will always be a bastion to steal the play of the game by just camping there killing everyone.
Not a fan of his desing Altough he's not that hard to beat with the right heroes.

Posted some tips in a thread on the Overwatch subreddit, figured they would be useful to people here as well. For those that are curious / want to see some other tips: here is the thread.
Assault
- Genji -- Be slippery with your movement! A lot of times you can disorient an opponent doing something like jump --> quick wall climb -- turn around --> double jump.
Do not blindly use Genji's ult. Wait until chaos starts unfolding and try to go through a flank path. Usually the enemy team will be so distracted by the push from the front off of a Lucio ult or a Zarya black hole that they won't even notice you shredding the back lines.
- McCree -- Against Genji, make sure to throw your flashbangs at the ground beside him. If you throw them directly at them, he could potentially deflect them back at your face. While no gun has recoil to my knowledge, McCree's alt fire will kick up during the shots, so make sure to slightly drag your mouse down when you use it in order to keep it steady. This should be a familiar feeling for any CS:GO player.
- Pharah -- In air battles with other Pharahs, its generally preferable for you to boost 2nd. As it's often easier to aim down at a Pharah than up. (I can't personally attest to this as I don't play Pharah much, but I know I've heard it from a top Pharah player)
- Reaper -- Often times you can get ults off simply by wraith forming at your opponents. This is highly situational though as most heroes can either kill / stun you on the spot, or a more experienced player will book the fuck away from you when they see a Reaper running at them in Wraith Form.
- Soldier 76 -- Your helix rockets will also auto aim when your ultimate is active, but be advised that it shoots them directly at the target. So at longer ranges it can often be dodged.
- Tracer -- Always be mindful of how many blinks you have available to you! There are so many little maneuvers that you can safely make using two or three blinks; I'm very tempted to make a video showing all of the neat little blink paths that I've found but haven't bothered with it yet.
A lot of times in 1v1 situations you can disorient your opponent as tracer by blinking behind them and chipping at them. When doing this, always make sure you either have your rewind or one blink that you can use to safely retreat and pick up a health pack.
Defense
- Bastion - Not much to say about Bastion, but it's worth noting that in turret form you will absolutely shred through Barriers such as Reinhardt's Shield, Winston's Dome, and even other Bastion Barriers.
- Hanzo -- See Genji on movement tips (obviously the double jump does not apply). Make sure if you're on defense that you use a Sonic arrow before the start of the match to hopefully get intel on a couple of the attacking team's heroes.
Someone else mentioned this, but aim Scatter Arrow slightly in front of an enemy's feet; they scatter will bounce up and insta kill most heroes. In my opinion, mastering Scatter arrow is the most important part of becoming a strong Hanzo player (apart from having good movement / positioning, but that applies to every hero).
Sometimes you can use your ult from the spawn room and the dragon will be silent by the time it reaches the opponents, potentially netting a few surprise kills. Note that this is very situational / map dependent.
- Junkrat -- Junkrat is amazing at area denial. Often times you want to spam grenades in a choke and have your bear trap either sitting somewhere in that choke or from a path beside / behind you. You generally want to be near your bear trap as you can kill most heroes if you're spamming grenades in to them the moment they get trapped; any non tank will die in 1-2 hits.
Remote Bombs. Mastering Remote bombs is the most important part to mastering Junkrat. First and foremost: you can detonate your remote bombs to get a super jump with Junkrat. Depending on how you angle it, it will send you either far or high. Additionally, you can get a super double jump with the remote bomb. To do this, lay a bomb, wait for the cooldown to recharge, detonate, while in the air turn around 180 degrees, throw another remote bomb and then immediately detonate it.
Remote bombs also do a ton of damage, so make sure that you use them in the middle of combat, don't just lay them and wait for an enemy to run by them. For reference, remote bombs do 120 damage. Tracer and Zenyatta have the lowest HPs at 150. Roadhog has the highest at 600.
You can also use the remote mines to disengage. If you have a reaper or a Winston on you, throw a remote bomb at them and immediately detonate them. This will send you both flying in opposite directions and hopefully by you time and space for your team to kill them and/or for you to pick up a health pack.
- Mei -- Learn your combo: Freeze --> Head shot icecicle --> melee. This will kill most, if not all, of the non tank heroes.
If the enemy team is pushing through a choke, try and position your Ice Wall in a way that will isolate one or two enemy heroes from their team to make them easy pickings.
You can use your Ice Wall to lift yourself / allies if placed directly beneath them. This can be incredibly helpful for allowing Bastion, Torbjorn, or Symmetra teleporters to get to places they normally wouldn't be able to access.
- Torbjorn -- Make sure to spam armor packs during Molten Core since scrap will not be consumed! Additionally, make sure if you're using Molten Core to upgrade a fresh turret, that you do not pop it until after the turret has finished building, otherwise you will be wasting the first 2-3 seconds of your ultimate.
On a similar note, when playing against Torbjorn: If you noticed that his turret is level 1 and he has popped molten core to try and upgrade it, KEEP DAMAGING IT! This will cause his swings to be wasted on repairing his non threatening level 1 turret. Of course, don't blindly abide by this rule as Torbjorn himself can do some respectable damage while his ultimate is active.
- Widowmaker -- You can sometimes survive an attack/flank by dropping down and immediately grappling back up to where you were when the enemy hero drops down. Also, a fully charged shot will 1 shot Tracer and Zenyatta with a bodyshot unless they have Symmetra shield's or Torbjorn armor.
Tank
- D.Va -- D.Va's primary fire is attrocious at long range, and even mid range, but does respectable damage when in close quarters. However, one useful application at long/mid ranges is constantly peppering an enemy Zenyatta / Zarya / Mercy at long range to prevent their health from regenerating.
Learn to master maneuvering with D.Va's Boosters! Often times you can escape a sticky situation by boosting up and hooking in to a room on the high ground and securing a health pack. It's also worth noting that Boosters have a slight amount of damage and knockback to them when you run in to an enemy. Another thing to note is that if you are defending a choke and at low HP, use your boosters to quickly grab a big health pack (+250 HP). You're likely not the only person on your team that needs healing and doing this makes life much easier for your Mercy/Zen/Lucio!
Her other ability, Defense Matrix, might be one of the most impactful non-ultimate abilities in the game. DO NOT JUST USE THE ABILITY WILLY NILLY IF THE ENEMY TEAM HAS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING HEROES AND YOU SUSPECT THEY HAVE THEIR ULTIMATE ABILITY READY: Reaper, Pharah, McCree, Road Hog, Soldier 76, and to a lesser extent Bastion. Additionally, Defense Matrix is really useful for saving yourself or an ally from McCree or Roadhog's Combo. D.Va's Ultimate Ability can be very hit or miss, but against less experienced players it is almost always devastating. It's also worth noting that if your boosters are active, your mech will carry its momentum which essentially allows you to hurl a long range nuke at your opponent. If the map / situation allows it, try and use your boosters at a high angle; Enemies will often easily be able to LOS an exploding mech flying at their face, but if it's coming from above, it usually takes them longer to notice and react to your ultimate.
On the subject of synergies, I've found that Zarya and Mei's ultimates combo nicely with D.Va if you communicate. Additionally, I've found that Genji also synergizes well with D.Va because enemies will often panic and tunnel vision on trying to LOS the Self Destruct and will not properly deal with the Genji slashing at their face. I suspect that this tactic would probably work with Reaper as well.
You can also use D.Va's ultimate to clear any enemies away from the Payload / capture point to secure you that last little push! This can be very useful for clutching out captures / checkpoints / finishes. Also, I'm not sure how widely known this is, but when you receive fatal HP in your Mech, you can still activate your ultimate while D.Va is in her "eject" animation.
Lastly, D.Va's ult will damage structures, meaning you can use this to kill Torbjorn's Turrets or Symmetra's Teleporter.
- Reinhardt -- I'm not sure if I can give too many specific tips for Reinhardt; He is a very "feel" based character. Meaning that you will need to get a feel for where you should be positioned and when you should keep your shield up (which is usually the majority of the game), or when you should put it down to fire strike or melee.
Make opponents respect your Hammer! It deals 75 damage, if a Tracer or a Zenyatta gets too close to you, you can kill them in two swings of your hammer (though don't put your shield down if you have allies behind you and your shield is protecting them from Widowmaker shots).
Lastly, don't use your ult to get meaningless solo kills. When you're attacking, use it when you know when you can secure multiple kills to allow your team to capture a point or get a big push on the payload. When you're defending, save it for when the enemy is trying to push hard (generally when they use Lucio ult), or use it when you can secure multiple kills and the attacking team has a long walk from spawn (Gibraltor's 2nd checkpoint and the final stretch of King's Row come to mind).
- Roadhog -- Just wanted to re-emphasize the point in the OP about learning his combo! It's critical to being an impactful Roadhog. Additionally, learn to get a feel for his alt fire. If you get it down and space it perfectly, you will be able to occasionally net kills on enemies that aren't prepared for a Roadhog to kill them from midrange. Also, when poking / prodding around choke points, Roadhog's alt fire can be very useful for chipping away at Reinhardt's barrier or preventing shield / HP regen from Mercy/Zarya/Zenyatta.
Additionally, make sure to get a feel for Roadhog's hook range. I have played quite a few games as Roadhog and I still underestimate the range on his hook at times. Another thing to note is to still use your self heal if you're low and have a Mercy on you. You're not the only one on your team that needs healing and healing a big beefy meat sponge like Roadhog takes a lot of time!
One important thing to note about his self heal: while you have to stand still and channel it, you will carry your momentum if you use it while in the air, allowing you to get your heal off half a second sooner when posturing to hide behind a wall.
As for Roadhog's ultimate, it is insanely strong when used in a tight space and pounding an enemy in to a corner. It can also be useful to negate Winston or Genji's Ult as well as Reinhardt's Charge. I'm unsure if it will work against Zenyatta's Ultimate or D.Va's ultimate. Could anyone clarify this? Also, his ult is absolutely disgusting when combo'd with Zarya's ult as it will keep them locked in place to eat the full brunt of your ultimate.
- Winston -- Winston is incredible at dealing with Back Liners. One Winston alone can deal with a Widowmaker + Mercy combo. You will make support's lives hell as Winston. Even if you can't secure kills, you can still be impactful by being a big distraction. Often times you will force 2 to 3 heroes to react to you, which will allow your team to push in.
When you drop Winston's barrier, make sure you stand near the edge of it, this will allow you to weave in and out of it in case any enemies do walk in to it to try and damage you. You can also use Winston's Barrier to protect your team from Pharah ult (to some extent), Reaper Ult, Junkrat's Ult, McCree's Ult, Reinhardt's Ult, Soldier's Ult, Mei's Ult, and Zarya's Ult (to some extent). Make sure that your spamming his barrier when your ultimate is about to end, as often you will be in a dangerous position and this will allow you to live a few seconds longer and buy more time for your team.
Winston's ult will full heal him, so try to take 200-400 damage before popping your Ultimate (Usually I will leap in, drop barrier, wait until I'm low, pop ultimate, and then mash the 'E' key when my ultimate is about to end, and then potentially leap out depending on the situation).
One last note, Winston's primary fire is amazing for clearing out Symmetra's Turret nests.
- Zarya -- Get a feel for her weapon! I know I am often surprised by the range of both her primary and alternate fire. Similar to Reinhardt, Zarya is often about getting the "feel" for her. Knowing when to barrier yourself, when to barrier allies, constantly being aware of how much charge you have. On that note, Zarya can actually dish out insane damage when fully charged. I've seen fully charged Zarya's make quick work of an enemy team by using Graviton Surge and spamming her alt fire. Similar to Reinhardt, you should also save your ultimate for securing a big push or preventing an enemy's big push.
Support
- Lucio -- Learn to abuse your wall skating! I see a lot of Lucio's basically play like a gimped Zenyatta. Also, make sure to swap to your speed aura if none of your allies need healing. When I first played Lucio, I found myself often sitting on his healing aura far too often. Lucio's alternate fire is very useful for knocking away an enemy Genji/Winston/Reinhardt, and make sure you Melee the person before knocking them away! Lastly, make sure to use your Ultimate for securing a big push or when you know your team will be taking a lot of damage, such as when 3+ teammates are caught in a Zarya ult.
- Mercy -- This hero is very straight forward so there isn't too much to say about her. But make sure you learn the situations in which it is okay to use your secondary weapon! Also make sure to abuse her shift as it is on an incredibly short cooldown.
- Symmetra -- Not enough people respect Symmetra's damage. At close range, her primary fire is no joke. Her alternate fire pierces barriers which makes it amazing against Reinhardt and Bastion (it deals 125 damage when fully charged!) Apart from that, Symmetra is all about awareness: Constantly be checking if every ally has a shield, if you have 6/6 turrets, if your current turrets are attacking anything / get destroyed, and the amount of charges remaining on your Teleporter. Make sure that if you are about to place your teleporter that you let respawning allies know. If you don't have a mic, the best way to do this is to spam Z as it will notify your teammates that your ultimate is ready.
- Zenyatta -- As mentioned in the OP, Zenyatta's damage is insane, but he is tied with Tracer as the squishiest hero in the game, but he has 0 mobility (but he does have the benefit of having no footstep sounds!) Beware of Widowmaker as her fully charged scope shot will one shot you, even if it's not a head shot. This can be prevented by having a Symmetra shield or Torbjorn armor.
Prioritize keeping your Orb of Harmonies on a flanker such as Tracer/Genji/Reaper so they are able to stay behind enemy lines (this is especially true if you also have a Mercy on your team).
Use Orb of Discord to take down tanky targets or to quickly bring down enemies that push too far in. Additionally, you can place this on enemy flanking heroes to keep tabs on their positioning, but know that Tracer can use her rewind ability to dispel Orb of Discord.
For Zenyatta's ultimate, you generally want to try and use it to counter a big push / damage from the enemy team, such as when your team gets caught in a Zarya ult. Do NOT use your ultimate just to save your life from the backstabbing Tracer unless the enemy team is also pushing in.

Yes I know. Which is why after having tried it, if I can get a few buddies to pick it up, I'll buy it.
Very nice of the netcode to let me get meleed from 10 feet away though, makes it really hard to gauge how to move in relation to the other dudes. Fucking shit.

1. Buy console 2. Buy game for console 3. Buy internet access from provider to be able to go online 4. Buy PSN/XBL so you can use your internet connection in those servers. 5. Buy DLC starting at day one, because obviously you dont deserve to enjoy the full game from just paying for the first 4 steps.

lmao
I've been playing a lot this weekend. I really like how it feels every hero is very distinct and has so many nuances to master. I've played so many hours and I am having a tough time getting in the seat to play them all because there's so much I want to do with the heroes I really like, and that ceiling only gets more crazy when I have to figure out what hero should do on a particular map.
My favorite is Junkrat. He can get onto those high edges, and can set up traps to deal with those annoying fast heroes. Plus, you feel so powerful when you blast your enemies outside of a corner where they're normally protected from versus traditional projectile guns.
Although he does feel cheap at some times, because ammo is not an issue.
D.VA is super onbnoxoius, her invincibility frames going in/out out her mech, are just the worst. I feel her leaving her suit on death feels really cheap, I kinda wish she died unless she ejects.

Does this have some sort of hidden MM system? Games have gotten a lot harder, am I getting worse?
Also my problem with this game is everything is boring except Tracer... everyone and their mom plays tracer

The skill cap on almost all the heroes in this game feels so incredibly low.

It is when you're facing uncoordinated teams. Some guns are quite easy to aim, but you won't do shit with them against a team that kills you the minute you try to flank them.
@above: He's referring to the fact there's little recoil, several hitscan guns, and those with projectiles have decent splash. It means that aiming consistently is easier than a game like Counter-Strike.

aye game has a matchmaking system, so it tries to put people together that are equally skilled. It seems to be a basic one though, but some of the high ranked people just meet each other all the time. So something is there heh.

good thing that Blizzard games exist then !

I don't know, i play csgo too but i would say overwatch has a higher skill cap regarding the aiming, just because the heroes are more mobile than cts/ts in cs. Sure there is a spray pattern in csgo but it mostly raises the skill floor tbh. Atm i don't think that the skill ceiling is too low in overwatch
|
It's a completely different skillset than CS:GO. CS:GO obviously being incredibly weapon centric. I think the skill cap is high.
|
I think there is a pretty good skill cap in this game. There's less hero moding (although, when I play reaper with a zen orb I can go to town most of the time). It's less about your ability to click on people and more about using your abilities effectively. The people that claim the game has such a low skill cap are clearly the best ever... already??
I come from Quake, CS & TF2, and all of those obviously require you click on the bad dude better than in this game. I really like the somewhat RPS factor of swapping heroes and such mid game. You can definitely start with a staple of like Rein, Dva, mercy, zen/lucio, mcree/widow junkrat/pharah/etc, then adapt mid-game. I just hope it doesn't turn out like tf2 with the standard 4 classes in competitive.
Definitely can't wait to play this competitively. Playing from aus on 180-200 ping is much more playable than the other FPS' I have played.

I think most of the tanks are some of the most fun tbh. Definitely about positioning and being aware who is alive on your team so you don't just go in rambo. If you have another tank and wanna play tanky, roadhog is mad as a roaming tank/offtank/solo killer with hook -> shot + melee killing most squishies pretty handily. I myself have my fair share of enjoying the fragging classes the most, but even a hero like zen (if your team needs a support) is pretty fun, as you can just own dudes from long range and live most of the game if you position well and are somewhat protected.
EDIT: I've seen Pharah pushback work against zen ult, so I assume roadhog ult would do the same. I'd also note that roadhog ult p much obliterates reinhardt, so if there's some guy sitting on a cap and you have your ult, you can definitely make him have a sad time.

I agree that Overwatch has a pretty good skill ceiling, but it does not come from its aiming.
|
I disagree with cs completely, as i said before the biggest part there is the skill floor being raised. The skill ceiling in theory too, but you will almost never need an actual full spray because you will be dead if the first few bullets don't hit. quake is way more challenging for example. In the end it doesn't matter if the shooting is rather simple (hitscan) when the enemy is mobile enough to make it harder to hit with it. Though i would agree that overwatch right now isn't really about the perfect aim for the most part, maybe that changes when people get better though.
