tf2 player.... playing demoman, WHAT A FUCKIGN SURPRISE olo

Watching seagull also and his doing things I wouldn't thought would be possible, makes me think what other classes can do.
Might be too soon to say but future is bright for a competitive scene.

I agree. Some of those skill shots and trick jumps (on day two of the closed beta no less) make me really optimistic about Overwatch's skill ceiling and potential for awesome plays.

Ugh I just wanna get on and play Support. They all look so fun.

The DJ support looks amazing and I haven't even seen people using the wall run yet. Some of the tanks look amazing too. The black hole power on Zarya also looks like a game changer if used correctly.

there was some sniper that Summit's team went up against that utterly wrecked and maintained control while they were pushing the objective forward
Sniper was supported by Mercy with damage boost
don't how much the boost was but I'm guessing it's enough to allow 1 shot kills to the body to non-tank characters with the Sniper

Either way these discussions about whether they are unlocked or not or comparisons to other models are kinda useless aren't they? I thought there was confirmation that all heroes are going to be unlocked(which is fucking gr8 for consumers). That means that the model is probably just going to be cosmetics, alternate voices/announcers like Dota(which is awesome). Or is there still vagueness about what kind of payment model it is going to be? Someone said earlier that it's they've gone on record saying all characters will be unlocked on launch but without seeing the specific language I would be cautious about that meaning that all characters will be unlocked forever. They can make so much money by locking new characters behind something like a temporary paywall that it makes very little business sense not to do at least that. Yeah paid early access to new characters sounds realistic. I would not mind that.
Uh that would actually be a definitive example of P2W. No argument. Every single game out there (LoL,Smite,DOTA,w/e), the newest character generally skews towards being somewhat or extremely OP. So this is just a dumb idea.

It's gotta be like 50-100%. It's a lot, or at least it feels that way. Mercy is damn amazing.
You can tell that even though this is beta, they've done a lot of design and balance work already. Take Widowmaker for example. You can't quickscope with her, but the damage from scope mode ramps up to 100% quickly. The grappling hook is really good, but the cooldown is pretty long. She's not gonna one-shot targets on her own, but she can with damage boost. There are all these synergistic relationships that make the game feel really polished and fun.

i would pay to have my rockets deal more damage

I dont want to sound too harsh, but I honestly hate this kind of thinking. It makes me mad. How can visible Elo by worthless when it is literally the only metric that says how well a player is doing? All other stats are worthless if you dont know at which Elo level theiy were achieved. I really dont get why anyone would not want to know his Elo in a multiplayer game. With hidden Elo you simply win 50% of your games no matter what you do and you never know how good or bad you are. Has really nothing to do with "dick waving" for me (although I also dont get what is so bad about that). I myself am a bad player in most games, at the lower end of Elo for sure. But I want to know if I am improving, which is why I want to see my Elo. Only seeing that 50% win rate no matter if I improve or not, no matter if I try or not, feels like being a hamster in a wheel to me and has killed my motivation to play several games already.

i feel exactly the same way... im too competitive to play a competitive multiplayer game..and not be able to tell if I am actually improving or not.
That literally saps all of the fun and enjoyment of playing a competitive game for me. I cant play normals in League because its "just normals" so i just dont care to win and would rather do dumb stuff/troll.
Its the same in Dota2 and CSGO... I need a ladder/ranking system. I want to know if I am progressing, I wont to know how good/bad I am at something. I dont want the participant trophy.

Dota 2 was originally supposed to not have MMR right? Could be something similar with Overwatch.

I want to know if I am progressing, I wont to know how good/bad I am at something. I dont want the participant trophy. The problem is that any system they make will be gamed and mean or shit. Just like SC2 and Dota. There are people in Dota who have very high MMR, but are shit because they just spam like 2-3 heroes. The metric is not very useful, especially in a team game where your teammates can just lose matches for you. There have been plenty of high level Dota players with shit MMR compared to others. It is a shit system to reflect skill and always has been. Many active dota players mock the MMR system because of it. Just like the SC2 ladder, where people got to Grand master by six pooling.
Using a metric can confirm someone’s improvement in at a given thing isn’t a good way to get better at anything. MMR and ELO are used to find opponents that the players are likely to be challenged by, not a measurement of skill.
It should also be pointed out that MMR normally levels out, because that is its job. You won't see yourself improve after a specific point unless you go outside the match making system.
On October 30 2015 01:51 jalstar wrote: Dota 2 was originally supposed to not have MMR right? Could be something similar with Overwatch.
It didn't have ranked, they added it, its pretty blah. It also doesn't reflect the MMR the game uses 100% of the time. Its just a number.

Well yes, and typically you are challenged by people close to your skill level

I am also challenged by a guy who spams Doom dota because Doom is the new FOTM hero and hard to deal with. Or the kid who spammed techies because that hero was a nightmare an get got to 6K. Then dropped like a stone because that hero was nerfed.
MMR is a match making metric that shows peoples ability to win games. Being just straight up better at the game is one of a number of ways to win matches. But it is not a metric of improvement or growth.
|
if not via MMR what system would you recommend is used for matchmaking?
Because you want something that attempts to construct reasonable equal teams and seeks to limit one sided stomps.
MMR is far from perfect. It has a ton of flaws. It just happens to be better then the alternatives.

MMR is fine. Not perfect, but fine. If you can't win games, then you don't get MMR. If you win games, you get it. That seems really fair and straightfoward. Blaming your losses on FOTM and cheese just means that you're not good enough to deal with things.
