Overwatch: Origins Edition contains the base game, all the heroes and maps, plus a cross-promo item for D3/WoW/SC2/Hearthstone/Heroes, plus special cosmetic skins for 5 heroes. It's $60 for PC and consoles.
Some of the posters here are correct that there are costs for third-party certification, packaging, publishing, distribution, retail partnerships, that are completely sidestepped by offering the product digitally. That is a likely reason why the $40 price point exists.
The $60 price point is their way to reach walk-in customers who don't follow gaming news while still offering additional value in the forms of cosmetics and xpromo. Even though you can order the Origins Edition digitally as well, they have to mirror the price to what you would see at a retailer so they don't undercut their partners.
QFT.
I bought the Collector's because why not. Shame it's not a tracer statue tho =[

I think its just as likely its Sony/Microsoft trying to protect their shooter market and letting it be sold for less then their own games (60).
Overwatch is a multiplayer only game. no it is no longer multiplayer only. check the feature list for February 9. you can play single player games and you can play 1v1 games where you and your best gaming pal get 5 AIs each per side.
I wouldnt call that a proper single player mode... like no ones buying Counterstrike and passing it off as a Singleplayer game just because it has bots and co-op vs bots. It's more of a practice mode.
When people think singleplayer, they think of a campaign with levels dedicated to single player.

i'm honestly not interested in the gameplay at all, but i love some of the characters which means i'll probably be playing at some point... i got the same vibe from skullgirls where the characters were super interesting but i'm not very good at fighting games.. i wish more companies would try to be as inspired as overwatch's character design team, because it's seriouslyyy awesome and definitely helps drive skins sales! i wish dota characters that were as cute/cool as overwatch... unfortunately i have to mute all of the dota unit barks because instead of cute and inspired they're just cringe compared to their wc3 counterparts
|
Really? I thought Dota 2's characters are cute. There's so much flavor and personality in them. Axe, Windrunner, Crystal Maiden , , kotl, phantom lancer, tidehunter, etc.
The only characters I dislike in all of Dota 2 are necrolyte, clinkz, and pugna. Those 3 seem so similiar and devoid of personality.

Junk Rat play of the game poses are the best. Can't decide between the first or the third.
Also good to see that in this game Dwarfs are op as well XD. Really cool how they turned Molten core into a push stopper. You scream Molten Core and will see 6 Turret kills schortly after. Unless the beat is dropped.
Well or Genji just slices you down before the push comes >.> .

I really enjoy a lot of DotA's chracter design. Way ahead of their wc3 counterparts that lacked any personality at all and were bearable only because the game was a godlike wc3 mod. To the guy that dislikes pugna: you can't deny his voice is sweeeet. Ancient Apparition was always one of the heroes that I pointed out to explain why I like DotA's character design, for me it looks like they're trying to retain the hero overall vibe from DotA 1 while giving them flavor

One would view the singular progression system is the single player experience. I don't think we'll see a campaign. The game isn't out yet; we're speculating. Furthee, an AI hero is not brain dead the way it is in Titanfall. The tools are there to create some kind of PvE experience and its still February.
i suspect Blizzard will construct a single player experience for console players in keeping with what your average XBoxer expects when they buy a $60 title like CoD or BF.
I've tried a single player game and some 1v1s with my gaming best pal and Overwatch feels 1000X more viable for 1 or 2 players than Titanfall did. With Titanfall you really needed 10+ players all the time.
Regarding the AI: Bob Fitch is not working on the AI Bots for Overwatch. I hope Blizz wows us with some smart and realistic AI.

On a per-SKU basis, it's *generally* the case that the $40 Download is more profitable than the $60 in-store or boxed purchase. But only looking at a per-sale effect is incredibly short-sighted. Visibility and long-tail sales are just as important, which is why you want it on store shelves. Especially for something you expect to have a very long-life, like all Blizzard titles. (As I type this on a Starcraft forum, haha.)
Though a company isn't a charity, pricing models & short-sighted decision making is important to always keep in mind. It's the difference between EA & Valve. EA's policies always seem incredibly short-sighted. And but for some exclusive rights deals, I think the company would have imploded already.
|
i like the $60 price point because because of the long-tail sales thing u noted. if i really like a game i want it to make a lot of cash so the company keeps supporting it. so far i really like overwatch.
About ur EA comment. + Show Spoiler + EA is on the S&P 500. Their biggest revenue generators are FIFA, The Sims, and Battlefield. Only one is an exclusive... and even then.. its not like it was handed to them on a silver platter. Exclusive rights deals are not keeping the company alive. Quality game play experience is.
To be awarded FIFA and Madden exclusives EA had to win long wars with competitors. If their games were garbage they would not get exclusivity; EA is losing the basketball war due to poor quality game play; EA does not have an NBA exclusive. Basketball is the #2 sport world wide and EA has been making basketball games since before 1983 and they don't have an exclusive.
Because EA cranks out so many titles they end up producing a lot of mediocre stuff. And internet forums contain a lot of negativity even when a game is great. Every year EA pumps out a little bit of really amazing stuff; That is why they are alive and kicking and ... hated.
|
Also the $60 price point reflects the console market, cost of putting the game on consoles and agreements with the console makers. There are for sure deals in place that games for PS and Xbox must be the same price point. Its not come crazy new standard that boxed games cost $60. The new thing is Blizzard offering a cheaper version directly from their store.

Was really skeptical to this game, but got beta and it's fucking awesome!
|
Got beta yesterday and I'm having a blast ever since! ...Literally, because Junkrat freakin rocks. He and D.Va are my 2 favourites so far. ^^
|
Still no Beta here. Blizzard hates me, I never got in for LotV and HotS before the open beta, and still nothing for Overwatch either
|
That moment when the play of the game is you...
...and it's you falling over dead.
|
I really hope they do open beta at some point. There is no way I will buy the game without testing it first.

in my experience and the experience of my friends.. your beta chances go way, way up if you attend a Blizzcon. This is not possible for many people. That said, the chances to get in any beta go up a lot if you buy the Blizzcon virtual ticket.
SC is acknowledged as THE sci-fi universe of Blizzard. Obviously, WC is the middle ages//meidevil//D&D universe. Where does Overwatch fit in?

i'm prolly being a naive sc fanboy about this... but, Blizzard's execs have explained that they'll continue to do all kinds of work on SC by saying "this is our Sci-Fi Universe guys! ! !! " they said it like SC was their 1 and only Sci-Fi universe.. and i think they said it during the BlizzCon 2015 opening ceremonies.
and i think i already found the answer... "Overwatch is set in the near-future Earth"
