Get hype for Ken! He may not be a favourite to win the tournament, but he'll always be my favourite :>
|
Really hoping a falcon makes top 8 this year. I expect good things from S2J and Lord, hopefully they can do it.

KDJ has Tang in pools (who he can beat) and PP in r1 of Quarterfinals (who he can't beat).
In Losers he has: winner of [Crush vs loser of Lambchopz / Trail], then winner of [loser of Darrell/Ken vs winner of Strongbad / (which of dudutsai/bacon? makes it behind SS)]. This is all well and good, until he faces the loser of L, which is between the winners of SFAT/(Zero/DarkAtma) and (Bizzarro Flame/Ciz/Laudandus)/Fiction. So basically he plays the loser of SFAT/Fiction, which looks pretty grim. If he survives that, he'll get one of Darkrain (if he loses to Silent Wolf r1 QFs) / Cactuar (who'll probably lose to Shroomed) / the winner of Duck vs Kels, which is very doable. Then he gets loser of PP/Shroomed, RIP.
So probably 33rd, but there's a chance at 17th.
Ken has an easier bracket: no threats in pools, Darrell r1 QFs. If he loses he has to play KDJ, who'll probably beat him; then he has the gauntlet described above. Otherwise, he'll lose to PP, then play the winner of (winner of Zero/DarkAtma pool vs winner of Bizzarro/Ciz/Laudandus) pool. This is doable, but then he'll play Silent Wolf, RIP. 25th is my optimistic prediction, 49th my pessimistic one.

I heard they don't have enough GC's so they have no choice.
Also, does the stream look kind of bad and choppy to anyone else?

To be fair, a lot of that is counter-picking spacies on FD. He can't always get FD.

M2K and Hax 3-1 H-box and Plup. Brackets reset.
Annnd M2K and Hax 0-3 H-box and Plup. M2K was playing jiggs btw and not badly. I suspect he's been practicing to use her as a counter-pick vs Armada. :o

M2k plays Jiggs in teams pretty often when HBox is involved (I think at ROM7 there was some funny stuff with Darc + Hbox vs M2k + someone, where there were loooots of rests in a row)
so doubles results are
1. Plup/Hungrybox 2. Hax/Mew2king 3. Leffen/Ice 4. PewPewU/SFAT 5. MacD/Fiction, KDJ/ZeRo 7. Lucky/Mango, Shroomed/S2J?? 9. Aniolas/Armada, ?, ?, ?

Sort of off topic; liquipedia for smash uses country flags? Seems much less useful than using character icons. Any way liquipedia can get the icons on there?

For the majority of matches, the characters used and even the match scores are not known. For the matches where the characters are known, you can click on the match to see the characters and the stock scores. Using character icons where the flags are would result in a lot of blank spaces. Since many players use multiple characters, using players' mains would result in potential misrepresentation of match results.

So, who won PM? Fell asleep again when they were showing top 6.

Calling it now, m2k avoids armada and wins evo this year.

For that to happen, he'd have to beat Mango, and/or Hbox would have to beat Armada. I wouldn't bet on either of those things happening.

Disregarding the tournament without his controller m2ks been beating mango pretty consistently for a while now lol.
I agree with hbox losing to armada though.

They have traded sets at times, but I'm pretty sure Mango still holds the upper hand.

yeah fox ko's puff at low % but hbox just needs one good hit to kill fox with chained aerials and of course, mango has to do so much to avoid the rest setups constantly its just one more annoyance to think about and affects how he can do what he does

I think last year's Evo might of been more hype. I think the double Hbox-Armada games weren't really dream MUs from an hype perspective, though I'm hella happy Hbox beat Armada twice and got over that obstacle. Axe was the real big hype train though, imagine if he beat Armada =O

I don't think fox vs peach is much more enjoyable at all then jigglypuff vs fox. Not the current jigglypuff that hbox plays anyway

hbox definitely lowered the hype though
like yeah he brought it to game 5 but def not as hype of a GF matchup or a "rivalry" as mango/any other big five

Games are so much more enjoyable when theres an intrinsic value to them, rather then some external shit like that.
|
Variety?
Plus whenever I see Fox I just wish I was watching Falco instead.
Edit: What do you mean storyline hype? I was just excited to see Hbox do well. Since he hadn't been doing that great lately. And since he performed better the games were better so their intrinsic value went up.
|
Storyline hype aka Mango vs. Armada was cockblocked. Hard.
Summer lead-up: Super SWEET: Armada > Mango (though this wasn't GFs) MLG: Mango > Armada (Armada > Mango in pools) CEO: Armada > Mango (Mango > Armada in WFs) KoC4: Mango > Armada (Armada bracket reset in GFs)
Going into EVO: 8-8 all-time sets 33-32 all-time individual games
EVO comes. The biggest tournament to cap off the summer. The tournament everything has been building to...
Armada double eliminated by Hbox in a real snoozer of a series. We get Mango vs. Hbox grand finals
15-2 all-time sets (after evo) dunno games but it's something lopsided
to me, that is storyline anti-hype. the mango/hbox "rivalry" hasn't really existed for a long time, it's just mango winning every time and made grand finals less exciting in general
like obviously can't complain about Hbox having probably the tournament of his life, but I wanted more
|
Okay I understand what you are saying. I guess it was kind of anti-climatic in that sense.
|
God it is SUCH a fad to hate on hbox. When will people get over it?
|
Yeah the only thing I didn't like was YL-Puff killing the hype. I'd imagine if Axe gets an upsmash that last game vs Armada we'd be in for a more hype Top8.

Maybe I'm the only one but I freaking loved YL-Puff and especially seeing Hbox beat all odds to get into the finals.
Hbox is such a cool, nice guy and I love watching him play and how excited he gets. Hbox <3

Is there any prospect for Ken and KDJ to be top contender in the future or has the ship already sailed?

Ya, I loved it too tbh. I do wish Armada would've won, though .

I was just happy that there was only 1 Fox in the finals.
Also, was Hax at EVO, and if so, how did he fare?

They can maybe contend to be top 25, though the people around them seem to be improving faster than they are
beyond that seems unlikely
@darthfoley: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/smash/EVO_2014/Quarters_Brackets, he got 13th (lost to Zanguzen and Plup)

Wat? When was the last time there was a fox ditto grand finals...?
Protip: never

No one but Hax, Axe, and probably Leffen can challenge the big 5 right now. I'm stating the obvious here, and I'm not trying to provoke any TL fans here, but Ken+KDJs time is long gone. They're still better than the majority of the smash community out there, but they don't have the skill to be top contenders anymore, if ever again.
Hax had a disappointing tourney. That Zangouzen(?) guy that beat Hax was a pretty good Falco player, but he just looked pretty bad playing against Nintendude. Guessing it was lack of ICs experience, because Falco should have little to no problem getting in on ICs, pressuring them, splitting them up, and then spiking Nana off the stage.
One day Axe will break out of the 5th place spot barrier and grab top 3 for himself. The big 5 cannot deny the mouse forever.

The reason for that is Armada. No Fox except Mango's can beat his Peach.

Yeah, before Armada every grand finals was Fox dittos. Since he got here though, like at EVO, he ran through noted Fox mains Scar, HDL, Plup, Fly Amanita, Axe, and PPMD to prevent the hated finals from happening.

Zanguzen is a very old school NY Falco (aka he's from Hax's region.) He's known for his super-patient Falco, but I was as surprised as anyone that he beat Hax.
He should've taken out Nintendude though
and the highest-level Fox ditto GFs that there have been recently are like, SSS's, heh

"before Armada every grand finals was Fox dittos" seems like a questionable statement. When is before Armada? Well let's say he broke into the scene in 2009 with a 1st place in Smash Attack and a 2nd place in Genesis 1. Then let's look at tournaments before these, and see whether their top 3s are populated by only Foxes.
RoM 1: Mango, M2K, DaShizWiz Pound 3: Mango, M2K, PC Chris 2007 Evo World: Ken, HugS, Mango MLG Las Vegas 2006: PC Chris, KoreanDJ, Ken GS2: Ken, ChuDat, Azen Game Over: Ken, Azen, Isai
Obviously there are tons and tons more tournaments to consider, but even from these somewhat notable tournaments spanning 5 years of pre-Armada smash history, we see not a single Fox main in the top 3.

Uhhh Fox ditto GFs have always been rarer, heck Fox GFs have been rare until Mango. Funny enough it was Armada who actually created a Fox ditto GFs (RoF,Beast), because Leffen was a Fox that could beat his Peach lol.

ICs vs Falco is pretty evenish, slight advantage for falco imo.

Leffen can't beat him. M2K can't beat him. Those are 2 really good Fox players. To be fair to you though, no one will/would challenge Mango in Fox dittos, so he could definitely be the reason why no one plays Fox vs him in GFs, if any Fox player does make it there. Good Marths have been an obstacle for Fox players as well, Ken/Azen/M2K, as someone mentioned in the past.
Also, EVO = all tournies ever apparently. Armada has been around in NA (albeit a bit on and off in the earlier years perhaps) since 2008.

another reason is that he goes Falco when faced with a Fox because he doesn't like Fox dittos.

If Chillin can do it, Ken and KDJ can definitely do it and become real top contenders again. They're doing very well for the time they've had imo

PPMD...EG curse? HungryBox was pretty hyped though. As much as I wanted to see Armada vs. Mango in grand final, HB beating Armada's YL and PPMD's falco is an achievement I'm glad I witnessed. Coming into evo, I was expecting HB to fall off as one of the gods, but was proven wrong. Good job HungryBox. SilentWolf's run was unexpected also. KoC4 was the best tournament this summer, imo.

So what you are saying is, Fox dittos GF IS RARE ...And it's not because of Armada because prior to that Fox had a few GFs appearances. Plus Leffen has shown to be capable of beating his Peach, which funnily enough actually brought the Fox ditto GFs upon us. Remember Fox was derided as not being able to win tourneys because it was true (PC was the only one who really won anything), until friggin Mango. I don't get it, as good as AR is he's no more of a reason than M2K, PP, etc. for Fox not making to GFs lol. Also Armada's first NA tourney was Genesis, in the summer of 09.

Many of the things Ken does just make no sense and seem like age-old bad habits. He has many flashes of brilliance though and is very entertaining as far as Marths go.
He's not even that bad at this point, I consider 33. at EVO respectable.

The thing is I bet Chillin is taking smash way more serious than Ken and KDJ right now, and it's showing.

I wasn't implying that the finals are always saturated with 2 Foxes. I was merely expressing my dislike for Fox matchups, especially fox dittos.
|
Fox might be the most overrated best character in a video game until a few years ago lol. I still remember when Fox had trouble winning tourneys at all despite being the most popular by far.
|
Fox isn't overrated at all. He's by far the best character and has at least half a dozen totally broken options that no one else has. He's just also by far the hardest to play, and Fox players SD all the time because the character is so demanding.
IMO the real 20xx is gonna be no Fox players because their controllers all suck
|
What's wrong with prog, health wise? I saw the video but didn't really catch anything other than short breath.
|
uhhh Jigglypuff got 2nd??
|
Puff has been top tier for many years and she also has a favorable matchup against Peach, which is Armada's main, and he was the other contender for top 3. No big surprise
|
Ugh so sad Armada v Mango grand final didn't happen. HBox is one of the few players that makes watching melee boring. Props to him for beating Armada though.
Also I don't get how people hate on spacies matchups. They're the characters that make melee exciting by having insane punish games, both for and against them.

I think Falcon is by far the most exciting character, although I do love me some Marth/aMSa. I've always liked watching some of the lesser played characters, which is why Axe's run was so cool.
