First, Eevee is level 25 which mean any evolution (even if we failed to get Vaporeon) means addition of heavy hitter we desperately need. We have to brave PC sooner or later to make room for Hitmonchan/lee - it is inevitable, so why sacrifice such high leveled pokemon to avoid momentary risk, especially when level grinding is outlandishly difficult considering the setup? There is risk of release but honestly, at current junction every pokemon except Pidgeot is expandable too (in which case Fly could be used to prevent this possibility, if you really want it). I just believe Eevee is unjustly getting lot of flak here, just for being high-risk-high-return strategy. It'll become clear sooner or later whether this decision is good idea though.

I'm not personally invested in it, so it's just funny either way, but I cannot see how picking up eevee is anything but a terrible choice.

You basically just need enough levels to brute force everything, and the way Red moves, levels come easily. And having to use the PC twice is worse than having to use it once. Even if they get lucky and manage to not waste all money on some useless item, it doesn't mean it was the right choice. I might be wrong here, but I think you're overestimating the strength of Pidgeot and ABBBBBK. With all the random encounters we'll get going through caves and stuff, and no way to heal, those pokemon are going down eventually. Then our entire team is pretty worthless since they're not leveled and can't do anything. Also, can we kill ghosts? If we were lucky enough to upgrade eevee, we'd be able to actually have a chance doing lavender town. Though, if we throw away Pidgeot or ABBBBK while depositing something to make room, I'll be very sad. That might not make it worth the risk in the end. And Jay Leno too. As bad as he is, he'll always hold a place in my heart.

It's easier to get fly for Pidgeot I think, iirc you can do that before Lavender. Even if they do get Vaporeon or Jolteon, they are still going to die a lot, it will be about brute forcing it through several attempts, and it's more liekely they end up with just 1 or 2 overleveled pokemon. It's very hard to spread XP this way.
