Back in time Gul'dan found a version of Illidan there and brought him over
Edit: And he was like, yeah, this is how demon hunters work
I thought Guldan dies in the cutscene at the end of the archimonde fight?
He gets thrown through a portal by Archimonde just before the latter dies. I assumed he was send to a legion world for punishment but I guess it was our Azeroth?

They should have just made it like, hey while we were busy in an alternative time dimension fighting on Dreanor, someone in real time has stumbled upon Tomb of Sergeras and opened portal for burning legion invasion

Could be Illidan, could be Sargeras, avatar of him or any Burning Legion boss (Kil'jaeden..)...Lots of options and way too early to be 100% at this point.
Even Jaina could be villain in this exp (See: not a raid boss).
Thing is, at this point this expansion feels like it WONT be a one-year expansion (So much stuff) and definitely would be lackluster if it only had two raid tiers. I'm betting on three tiers. Unless cut-cut-cut happens.

I dont think so. I think I saw some art of Illidan fighting Guldan in the art.
I think he's an awesome character, people are pissed they made him a villain instead of an antihero, he's Anti-Legion and this expansion is against the Legion, we should keep him around, keep him badass, because we'll probably bitch and moan to bring him back again anyway.

It could completely be a one year expansion because I guarantee they're working on the expansion after Legion already. WoD wasn't even out and I saw tweets from one of the devs saying they were already working on the next one.

Maybe because people wouldn't like new stuff ? Maybe it's too difficult/takes to much time to do this. Or maybe there is not that many people that like the lore ?
Garrosh, and the Sha.
If we need a new villain, we could make Wrathion a villain, or those other black dragonflight dudes who are apparently corrupted?

Every expansion since TBC has been wanted to be a yearly expansion. WoD is the first one where they are looking to actually do it. I fully expect legion to be a 1 year expansion. Tho that makes the huge amount of lore crammed into it even more silly.

Of course its a possibility. I just don't personally feel it right now.

Could be a bunch of stuff to set up future expansions. Queen Azshara is going to show up, maybe she'll be just there to set up her expansion. Going to Neltharion's Lair? Setup for Dragon-based expansion in the future. I'm ok with that too.

Definitely. All though, getting a Queen Azshara expansion after the biggest invasion of Burning Legion ever sounds dull if it's not mixed with bunch of other stuff, like Legion is.

To be fair, the whole BC lore around Illidan was very weak, at best. If he was afraid of Kil'jaeden returning, why was he turning against all the allies he could have used (Shattrath, and all the horde and alliance adventurers flooding through the portal)?

idk, Blizzard gave him the ol "... and he became mad" justification to make him a villain. That's why a lot of his fans are upset what they did to his character, a misunderstood anti-hero turns into a evil asshole loot pinata.

That view overlooks the fact that his forces were made up largely of demons and fel orcs, he himself was half-demon, and he had a crazy plan to build a new Well of Eternity. There was also plenty of enmity between him and the Night Elves, and it's not like Thrall and company would have been thrilled to ally with someone actively corrupting what was left of the orcs in Outland.
