Obviously there are moments where the big skill gaps are showing in a sad way (but then again they allow for big upsets), and some casts are less entertaining than others. But overall it's a great show and great to see (western) WC3 blossoming once again, at least for this tournament.
Kinda makes you envious that we don't have a figure such as Grubby for the non-KR Broodwar-community, like just a bro who is a good teacher/preacher for the game - but also happens to be a multiple times world champion and "big" variety streamer that can draw in a crowd from other games. Tasteless and Artosis just aint cutting it. Isnt it odd that they really dont want have anything to do with this community? What? :S
They’re many things, they’re not a world champion tier player of their games, nor even close. They’re also not big variety streamers either.

I think that's definitely Artosis. He's not a world champion, but he's a knowledgeable player who keeps up with the evolving metagame at the pro level, and he's been promoting community events such as BSL and local LANs, as well as community-driven platforms like ShieldBattery, for years. He lives and breathes BW although I think he sometimes gets in the weeds about how difficult the game is to learn - Grubby is taking almost the opposite approach where he is aware the game is hard, but also showing that it's only as hard as you make it. Recent hugely successful collaborations in Street Fighter 6 have done the same thing: general outreach by having high-level tournament players coach variety streamers in these Cooperation Cup events, culminating in 5v5 team battles in a wider tournament format. It's a winning formula: you introduce new players to your game, show them the basics and let them run free, and provide more in-depth coaching sessions to the players who have the drive to push themselves harder.

Basically the Korean Highschool/Female Player leagues show that you could re-popularize the game for casual players beyond those who still play, similar to what happens to WC3 now (meaning: drawing LOTS more people who don't play any more but played in the past, or even some complete beginners). But that's with the backing of all the famous Korean old pros, some great streamer-personalities among them, and most importantly with a vast crowd of nostalgic viewers behind it, which doesn't exist to the same amount in the West I think. Afaik Korea completely took over top-level BW a little too early too much, WC3 on the other hand always stayed somewhat more international.
For this to happen for BW I think it would need at least a viewer-/player-fusion of the BW and SC2 community (just like WC3 and WoW and some from DotA, etc.), and something like the more family-friendly and welcoming yet humorous approach just like Grubby brings with his stream's vibe, but at the same time just enough professionalism, seriousness and competitiveness to make it meaningful. But most importantly that towering western BW-personality to pull it of who we lack, so... fat chance. In fact Grubby said he thinks a similar journey for BW sounded interesting to him, but I'm not sure it would work out the same way because it's not his main game. His undisputed authority and almost omniscience concerning WC3 as a former world champion gave that whole undertaking such a solid foundation.
And it's not even clear how it will go on with WC3, how many newly interested people will actually still play in a few months.

Grubby did a Heroes of the Storm stream the other day. Kinda a "way back to the top" series and had about 7k+ viewers. That is incredible. Not even an event or something. Just him randomly goofing some Storm League games

Grubby just hits all the checkboxes of being a great streamer: - Credibility; past results and current skill - Fun/engaging; ever evolving and learning - Fluent in English; able to articulate his thoughts in an easy to understand way (while playing) - Great streaming hours - Humble and (family) friendly - Proper YouTube channel
Day[9] and MrLlamaSC are very similar. They also have skill and can articulate themselves well. I'd say Grubby just has more credibility, has been doing this for a loooong ass time, and is very open to engaging with other communities, I'd say >50% of his regulars don't give a fuck what game he plays, same goes for Day[9] and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for MrLlamaSC.

He had a lot of viewers checking out his stream from all the collabs and the moment the tournament is over he streams a game that, no offense, no one really cares about. Either more warcraft, wow, or popular variety games wouldve been best imo. But I guess he's just doing what's fun for him and doesn't care much about viewership so all the power to him. I don't expect 7k to be a consistent metric you can hit streaming heroes of the storm for the long term.

He started getting back into Heroes a few weeks back. Dunno how much connection there is to the other stuff (WoW guys), but I think you are forgetting there is a looooooot of heroes and Warcraft related lore in there.

Haven't had a chance to go through them myself, but anyone got any kneejerk reactions to the PTR patch?

Tauren Resistant Skin is transformatively enormous. (note this is not working on the PTR yet) Web tier 1 is enormous. Magic immune Wards are enormous. Militia Armor nerf and Defend nerf are big. Vampiric Potion as a level 2 drop is big. Rune of Lesser Healing as a level 2 drop is big. Ritual Dagger having only 1 charge is big. Spiked Carapace nearly doubling in reflect damage is big. Wand of Negation doubling in charges is big. Wind Riders being worth 60 xp instead of 85 is notable. Siphon Mana reduced range and break distance is notable. Great Hall -15s build time is notable.
Pretty much everything else seemed within acceptable bounds to me, but those big/enormous changes are tremendously significant and should shake the game up a lot. But this is also just the first pass of the PTR so we'll probably see future iterations that scale back some of the really huge stuff.

I haven't played 1v1 in 23 years. Maybe soon though, time permitting I'd like to try it out.

Thanks! Curious to see some people test things out and what survives the shakes. I can't imagine vamp potion survives as-is.

vampiric potion is game ending drop that absolutely has to be re-worked.
