Existing custom maps will still work with Reforged.

If it's true then it's impressive they got remastered to work at all. easier than you'd think, hard drives will degrade over time even when not in use, tape drives (common for backups) are less volatile but can be lost or damaged easily.

(I could be wrong so feel free to correct me) I thought SC:R was essentially a "hack" that ran on top of the original game, not sure about this though, they could have scrapped that idea when they found the source code. (a fan gave it to them) SC Remaster is build and had reverse engineering. One example is the buffer overflow in the original game, which is used by players to make bigger custom maps. Blizzard wanted to have that in the remaster too, so custom maps from the original will still be working in the remaster. http://0xeb.net/2018/02/starcraft-emulating-a-buffer-overflow-for-fun-and-profit-recon-brussels-2018/ And something to read about companies losing assets and codes of older games: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16305769

I still don't see it. You have an office server with all your shit on it. It starts to fail. You decide to... ignore it?

I wrote a little post on the Blizzcon forum about it here: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/blizzcon/t/one-fans-wish-for-wc3-reforged-arthas-vs-illidan/711 In any case, I'm super hyped for this. I dont know if we will get a full cinematic similar to the intro movie, but the dev that grubby was talking to did say they are re doing the illidan/arthas fight at the end of TFT. I would feel that with all the updates to the in game cinematics it would be hard to see them not give it a good showing. The question is more of will it be CGI cinematic or just in game cinematic (which from the culling still look exceptionally better than original)

But that's exactly the point: you don't have "an" office server. You have maybe a dozen of them. On some of them is the code you want. maybe. Who knows exactly? Maybe back then everyone on "the core team" knew where to find all the data. These guys move on. For quite some time you only have a minimal maintanance crew. They just move code from one server to another once every 5 years after a server upgrade. they don't care what's exactly in every folder. Then you try to remaster the game. But the build has a servername hardcoded into an svn/git/hg checkout path. but the server is no longer there. Paths change due to a server merge. the path is /opt/gamedata/maps/. Try finding that on the whole server infrastructure. Software dev isn't as structured as you might think. Not (even) in big companies. Knowledge is distributed and gets lost. Source: I work in such an environment. This WE we migrate one server. things were pretty hectic last week.

So you can just take this as a nice activity boost, that bout it. Hopefully EA will be more ambitious with their cnc remasters.
