Well, to be fair, Sony has won pretty much every generation so far (minus the Wii, but even then, Sony came in 2nd). I don't see how spitting in the face of the used game and offline gaming communities will actually help Microsoft get ahead of Sony, let alone Nintendo.
An honorable mention to Nintendo (although I'm getting kinda old for their games).
How can you get too old for their games??? I turned 27 last week and just LOVE them (at least the main franchises)!
But back on topic: Design aside, which I find pretty awesome (I like retro-designs), required internet connection bothers me a lot in terms of privacy (combined with potential data collection by kinect, heard it will process about 2 gigs of optical data per second!).
In the end I don't think I'm a suited customer for this kind of console, as I tend to be rather conservative on these kind of things (bound-to-account games on consoles sounds just awful to me, although it's common on PC, I know ).
Yeah I should be more precise.. Apart from the portable consoles (3DS for all the great RPGs), I haven't had a Nintendo console since the SNES. I did play Mario 64 which I truly believe is one of the best game ever made. However, a Nintendo game will never be flat-out bad (except Mario Party which I think is utter shit.. the real Nintendo party game is Smash Bros)
Nintendo games however still deserve to be kept after they are finished, which is a VERY rare feat in today's console games. To be honest, with the exception of Arkan City, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Heavy Rain, 3D Dot Game Hero, Red Dead Redemption and GTA4, I can't recall a single PS3 game that should be kept after its 5-10h campaign. As for one game in particular, which I need to de-rail this thread even more just to vomit on it, I cannot think of a more overhyped and shittier game than Killzone 3. I cannot believe how people can sit down and play this game, both singleplayer and multiplayer. Add in the new Twisted Metal (Black on the PS2 was amazing, now this is shit) and that Smash Bros clone with the worst kill mechanic possible, and you'll see just how Sona isn't getting it these days. As for FPS games, they simply do not belong on consoles... no dedicated servers, amazingly bad controls, no editors, etc.. it is a pure mess.
And now, to go back into topic: I've played video games since the NES days, and while this may sound nostalgic or biased because of the age that i was in that particular time, I cannot find better years for gaming than 1997 to 2001 (BW, the first MMORPGs, HL, UT, Q3A, all the WRPGs like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment, all the JRPGs like SMT, FF, DQ. Since then, the quality of games, and especially its diversity (shooters, shooters everywhere) have gone down to almost oblivion, to the point that I cannot expect this industry to go in like this any much longer. It's a truly good thing that Indie games are getting more popular on Steam, that the 3DS has delivered so many amazing RPGs for those who don't care too much about graphics, and that competitive PC games, especially LoL and DoTA2, have opened a whole new phenomenon in Occident, because I don't see Xbox and PS4 being any relevant to most gamers anymore.
EDIT: As for the console DRM, and why I feel most people don't mind much about Steam being a DRM, is the fact that PC games have never really been re-sold (no real used games market), so when DRM got in on the PC, it was mostly against piracy which is an acceptable reason. As for consoles, the purpose of those DRMs were to kill the used games market (to keep the new games values up) , NOT to fight piracy. It's a whole different thing , IMHO

I can add a some more games to that list Uncharted 2 (I kinda like it way better than Uncharted 3) Metal Gear Solid 4 (How could you leave this masterpiece lol ) Gran Turismo God of War 3 (if you're into Hack and Slash)
And Arkham CIty? I never played that game once I completed the Entire Story mode..Guess I like playing games more for the story mode than collecting Easter Eggs and Unlockables
Regarding the stupid name, I have a little conspiracy theory in my head that Microsoft will go full Apple by releasing a new Xbox every few years. The next console will be Xbox Two, X|3ox, X|3ox S, Xbox 4, etc. Each new console uses the same x86 architecture which allows backwards compatibility, but older Xbox models will be phased out because of increasing hardware requirements of newer games.
Interesting. FIFA 14 is being released 27th September on Xbox 360 PS3 and PC. No sign of it for PS4/Xbox One yet. Wonder if that means anything or if thats all they are saying at the moment.
So i guess we can say that the PS4/Xbox One wont be out by September 27th? And for us gamers wtf, will we have to buy it for one console then possible another? Seems a huge kick in the balls to me >.<

i remember them doing the same thing with ps3, same game for ps2 and ps3.
as for those "15 games", we can already guesstimate a lot of them from recent tech demos and even some from ps4 presentation will be available for xbone im sure, like metal gear solid.
It describes how for example, films you could buy over xbox would be more expensive if there are sitting 2 persons in the room. Or that if the box checks that there are children it won´t show the content. When you "order" "content" you get monitored by the system so you get options for the content based on spectator numbers.

It also skimped on hardware upgrades, focused on kinect2, ignored the controller completely and potentially ruined used games. Also, it is kind of a big deal when a console has features that you wont use when they are touting them as primary features in the reveal. It will likely still come down to the games in the end, but I can see a lot of people switching over to the PS4. I know that I am likely switching at some point because I am tired of paying monthly fees for xbox live just to watch netflix on my TV downstairs (I really dont play console games much at all).
This. Ugh. It's going to take some amazing games for me to consider this thing.

What the hell? Forcing me to use a kinect was bad enough but this type of thing will guarantee I won't get an xbox1.
if they put internet requirements I would not buy it just cuz of that period. Consoles are kool cuz you can carry them around to friends house and plug and play. How the fuk am i supposed to do that if we are chilling, say, in a cabin in middle of no where >.>
It is as though the folks at Microsoft have perused internet forums and picked through the abundance of tin foil conspiracies, chosen those that could be implemented in a gaming console, and designed the thing accordingly. If that sort of video surveillance shit is standard on the xbox1, we ought to do our best as a gaming community to inform the public as to the sort of bullshit that is going on. A large part of me thinks that Microsoft is just hoping that people don't know or don't care. Let us hope that American consumers aren't quite that dumb....................

I should patent a sheet with eye holes and name it the "kinect bypass apparatus". Stay under it and watch stuff for free because it's going to see 0 people with every show! Piracy irl.

How would the box check if there are two persons in the room oder children? Kinda scary.
According to the application Microsoft intends to create "A content presentation system and method allowing content providers to regulate the presentation of content on a per-user-view basis. Content is distributed an associated license option on the number of individual consumers or viewers allowed to consume the content.
"Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content. The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken."
Based on the description of the technology developed for the patent it seems likely Microsoft will use the Kinect sensor, which is mandatory with Xbox One, to monitor the number of people present while watching a TV show, movie or music on the device. Presumably, should the content be consumed by too many people Xbox One owners will need to pay again.

Evidently the kinect2 is some kind of creepy ass surveillance system.

I'm sure they thought of that and the kinect can detect if it's covered or not, or if it's facing a wall etc... It's not a conspiracy theory, I don't think they're dumb enough to have a system that's so easy to cheat.
