You thought it would be possible to create a brain-computer interface and real life graphics?
Brain computer interface (BCI) is reality. Fine tuning it to the point that motor commands may be issued to control a complex game is inevitable. Primitive neural-motor prostheses enabled by BCI are already being applied to severe spinal cord injury patients. In 2006 the first pilot model was tested, where the motor cortex of a human patient was linked to a monitor informed by thoughts rather than mechanical actions. The patient was able to control the cursor, check email, and play a rudimentary game using only intentional thoughts generated at M1 region of cortex
Real-life graphics means "really, really, really good graphics". I probably didn't mean literally creating "real life images" inside the screen. Just really good ones.
Sorry for rocking the boat. For being worthy of calling it "next gen gaming", I want to see something big, not the addition of facebook, twitter, itunes, and comcast to Xbox. I'm not complaining about that, I'm just not amped about it, as a gamer nerd. I fully support those who are happy with it as a multimedia device. That's great too.

Good point.
As someone who is studying neuroscience, I'd like to point out that the 2006 study you are talking about requires invasive surgery, and and they have to implant electrodes into the actual brian. To be able to non-invasive, viz EEG, precisely control parameters is something that is not ready to be commercialized yet. There are many prototype EEG stuff sure, but they are at best able to read your mood/awake state, and certainly not control movement of robotic arms. To ask for a commercializable BCI product for gaming in 2013 is kinda not possible bro.

Lol... I am well aware and was not asking for it now. "Fine tuning it to the point that motor commands may be issued to control a complex game is inevitable."
I didn't say it's possible in 2013. I said it's inevitable. If you want me to toss out a random guess when that might be, I'll call it 20 years. In fact looking back at my comment...pretty sure I pointed out the technology is in its "pilot" stage. Also said *primitive* ones are being applied now, and also mentioned the fact that the M1 cortex is linked to the machine, implying need for surgical intervention, which apparently you assumed I didn't know about (I've read the Hochberg paper too). Was sort of thinking all this implied I understand although it's not ready NOW "in 2013 bro", that it will truly mark "next gen" for gaming whenever it IS ready
Look, the comment was just meant to say "this ain't gonna be NEXT GEN to me until I see something like reality-esque graphics or BCI gaming" <--- no major claims that need to be disputed lol, just an opinion

i think you're looking too far ahead XD
you can buy crazy gaming stuff if you have the money ranging from thousands to millions if you count simulators.
i thought playstation was "next gen" coming from snes, too poor for sega saturn XD

I will be waiting for the steam box thank you very much.

Specs don't matter, it's about the experience. Well, to be fair, Sony has won pretty much every generation so far (minus the Wii, but even then, Sony came in 2nd). I don't see how spitting in the face of the used game and offline gaming communities will actually help Microsoft get ahead of Sony, let alone Nintendo.
PS3 won over Wii. What optical device is the Xbox1 using? That was half the point of the PS3 release.

I haven't read anything that's pushed me away from xbox1. I'm cool with internet connectivity and games tied to my account. However the reveal didn't really show anything interesting. Hopefully E3's presentation is more intriguing.

Anyone who buys and tolerates this All-DRM console is killing gaming in general.
I've stopped buying EA and Activision games for a while now.. if everyone did like me, we wouldn't have these god-awful franchises and those two companies buying some old ones just to screw them up.
The top 3 companies to support because they have never stopped putting quality games on the market are Atlus, Valve and Rockstar. An honorable mention to Nintendo (although I'm getting kinda old for their games).
Now as for the new consoles, I will maybe buy a PS4 IF they decide to put a full backward compatible console on the market (ps1, 2, 3, since I am a RPG fan), if they do not endorse very constrictive DRM, and if they put out some good games ( no, not FPS... why play console FPS anyway...)
I hesitated between PS3 and Xbox 360 back in the days, but this generation's choice will be either 100% PC, or some PS4 mixed into it.

I don't see how the PS3 can remotely be classified as a success. Sony has financially suffered so much this generation because of poor planning from their Gaming division. The only help they've gotten was the acceptance of the BluRay as the DVD successor. Gaming wise, the PS3 has totally flopped, and Nintendo has gained a lot since the Gamecube dark days, as well as the N64 years where Nintendo lost their dominance to Sony.

I'll wait until they use the apple strategy and announce the second one which will be much slimmer, and fit inside a drawer or something along those lines.

Wahhh it has features I won't use. Wahhhh.

It also skimped on hardware upgrades, focused on kinect2, ignored the controller completely and potentially ruined used games. Also, it is kind of a big deal when a console has features that you wont use when they are touting them as primary features in the reveal. It will likely still come down to the games in the end, but I can see a lot of people switching over to the PS4. I know that I am likely switching at some point because I am tired of paying monthly fees for xbox live just to watch netflix on my TV downstairs (I really dont play console games much at all).

How can you get too old for their games??? I turned 27 last week and just LOVE them (at least the main franchises)!
But back on topic: Design aside, which I find pretty awesome (I like retro-designs), required internet connection bothers me a lot in terms of privacy (combined with potential data collection by kinect, heard it will process about 2 gigs of optical data per second!).
In the end I don't think I'm a suited customer for this kind of console, as I tend to be rather conservative on these kind of things (bound-to-account games on consoles sounds just awful to me, although it's common on PC, I know ).

Not interested at all so far. Show me exclusives that aren't garbage, Microsoft. Two or three franchises are not enough to warrant a purchase of this system.
From what I've seen, I'll be playing my PC, WiiU and PS4 only.

Shigeru Miyamoto hasn't come up with a new IP since Pikmin on the GameCube... Thats the state of gaming today. N64 was the absolute height of pure game design, I mean just look at the amount of games from that console the speedrunning community use... If only Rare didn't go to microsoft... sigh.

I would hardly call it the apple strategy when sony has slimmed down their hardware as early as the PSX. But yeah, there's no way I'm going to buy gen 1 console hardware ever again after suffering from RROD

If I'm gonna get a new console, it surely wont be the xbox one. It seems to shift the focus to something that I do not care one bit about. Also all the tv-crap its exclusive, at launch atleast, to NA?....

I want illumiroom but 2-3weeks ago an employee who works by microsoft says its maybe in 5-10 years available thats pretty disappointing. Thats was such an awesome feature for me. I think maybe its a tactic but now i thinks its true. No hint to it in the presentation. Or maybe im overlooked something?
Are these NFL partnership for the whole world? And can you watch this with xbox live gold or you need an season pass to? If microsoft have an partner ship with soccer too that would be so cool if i dont need passes to watch it.
But from the gaming side its a bit dissapointing.
