If a character gets hit clean, odds are that he's going to die. Do you need any information about the mechanics?

MvC3 is a simple game, it just feels complicated because there are so many setups and so much stuff flying on the screen. As long as you're only watching, you can boil the entire game down to controlling space and executing/defending against mixups. One player gets caught or mixed up and then dies to a 100% combo, repeat ad nauseum. The saving grace of the game is that different matchups actually do play very differently, it's just difficult to notice this unless you actually play the game. And IMO, if you're only spectating, there are far better games you could dedicate your time to understanding which would provide more enjoyment from figuring them out.

Typical match flowchart: 1) Continuous low/overhead/crossup mixups 2) If something lands, touch-of-death combo 3) Extremely ambiguous mixup on incoming character 4) If it lands, touch-of-death combo, if not go back to 1 This is a perfect example of a game that's fun to watch but often extremely infuriating to play.

Ok, learning to understand what's happening by just watching is hard. I understood what's happening in Dota2 and SSF4AE when I started playing the games, just spectating doesn't take you the whole way And IMO, if you're only spectating, there are far better games you could dedicate your time to understanding which would provide more enjoyment from figuring them out. Well, I'm watching mostly SSF4AE and Dota2 (both whom I play on and off) when it comes to E-Sports, it was just that I one time had nothing better to do and watched some UMvC3 but understood absolutely nothing.

UMVC3 is hard to learn just by watching, but once you can understand what is happening, the game does "slow down" a bit and becomes more enjoyable.

Now Scorpion(obviously a DC character right?) is just dominating the scene? What a great game Kappa. The Scorpion problem is somewhat the fault of tournament organizers (especially Evo), who for some reason decided to allow a just-released DLC character in the tournaments. I thought banning it would be a no-brainer until it's been out for at least a couple months and received proper balance tuning. Or possibly NRS/WB gave them some money not to ban him, to promote the DLC. Who knows.

He asked about understanding the game as a spectator, I was just trying to say that's all you need to know about MvC3 to watch it. Every game has space control and mixups, but I would argue there's a lot more to learn if you want to really get into watching and understanding a more complicated game. Scorpion isn't dominating anything, this is his first presence at a tournament of any importance, the MK community is just full of complainers. As for the burst system, there's nothing wrong with it, except I don't like how meter can be cashed in for health so simply. It's a lot like Street Fighter; easy to pick up a character and play, but there's still enough depth to keep it interesting for at least a few years.
