I quite liked it. I didn't like though when running there always the game seemed to 'hitch' after every few steps. Something they fixed in HeartGold/SoulSilver and Platinum. | ||

No the part that the gym has diogonal walking paths hints at diagonal movement heavily, IMHO. And i've seen pokémon related sites mention how much they were looking forward to diagonal movement. | ||
