I used a shortsword, because that was the only non-shit weapon i had. And it broke after i killed roughly 10 enemies, each time. I see no point in that mechanic at all. What is it supposed to add to the game? Apparently the point of that mechanic is to dick you over even more if you missed a bonfire. Wonderful, because that wasn't annoying enough to being with.
I found two bonfires in the area. I looked pretty closely, so if i missed any they must be well hidden. I guess i have to start looking up bonfire locations again then. I have no problem with the game being hard. I have a problem with the game condescending to me and forcing an easy mode upon me because it thinks i died too often. That is just utter Bullshit.
Maybe it's just because i have no interest in coop and am usually very conservative in the use of limited consumables, and thus running around at 50% HP at all times. Which obviously leads to me dying a lot.

Other thing is that there are a few cool shortcuts there, look for them.
Also, if you hit an enemies shield, you lose like 4x the durability on your weapon, that is probably the big thing that is hurting you.
If you are having a lot of trouble, try using the Mace (you can buy one from Lennigrast the Blacksmith in Majula) it is cheap, has really high durability, and a pretty strong moveset.

The game seems to be getting you used to the idea that different weapons are useful in different situations by forcing you to use multiple weapons (or I guess your fists) early on. I typically saved my best weapon (a sword with fire element) for the bosses themselves early on in the FOTFG and used the other stuff that I picked up along the way. It's a subtle way of getting you to experiment with different weapons and move-sets. The dagger is going to be your best friend for a long, long time for back-stabs due to its pretty insane damage from behind.

I don't necessarily have a big problem with the durability, it is just a minor annoyance that serves no purpose whatsoever. Durability in DS1 was pretty pointless, but at least it wasn't actively negative. Durability in DS2 ist just annoying and limits the amount of things you can do before returning to a bonfire for no apparent reason. It's just one of those many small things that is just WORSE then DS1 for no reason whatsoever. If something is good, why change it just to make it worse?
The thing that makes me physically angry are the shitty nonrespawning enemies. The worst thing a game can do to me is FORCE me to play in easy mode because it thinks i am too bad. Getting harder if i die too much is fine. I kind of dislike that too, but i can deal with it. Getting easier though, that is just plain insulting. How about letting ME make the decision? If i don't think i need to play in easy mode, why do you think you should force me to? It is just something that i hate to the core. Every second i play this game, i am not invested in how to get further or how to get better. Instead i am annoyed because it makes it easier. When i am dying, i don't care if i die or not, the only thing i think is "Well, i guess that means the level is one step further to easymode. How droll." And then i start to not care at all because it is irrelevant if i get better or not, i will beat the level eventually when there are no more enemies there. So why bother learning the level. And this is not the experience i want out of a Dark Souls game.
I am currently contemplating just to create a new character once the enemies start despawning, but i guess that is just way too annoying to actually do. This is a decision i can not, in any way, understand at all. I can not understand how someone who designed Dark Souls and KNOWS why people like that game would decide to make the game automatically get easier and easier the more you die. That is literally the exact polar opposite of what Dark Souls was about. And it bugs me so much that i actually hate playing the game. I can not concentrate on the surroundings, or enemy designs, or anything about this game, except for the fact that it is constantly insulting me as a player by getting easier and easier.
I heard that there was some modding going on in DS1, is there anything that fixes this ridiculousness out of the game here? Or is it only graphics?

K, I just realised that this game is on steam now and was about to insta buy it, but I had to restrain myself. Two questions (I don't know this because I suck at life)
1) Is the german version uncut or do I have to get the international version from somewhere else? 2)If the german version is uncut, can I set it to english somehow?
Thanks guys

Thanks guys 1) It's most likely uncut. (To elaborate the German version is FSK16 which afaik gets sold on steam just fine for all games.) 2) The "German version" has German subs / translations added. Ingame audio, cutscenes etc. are still in English. You're fine for this one.
You might want to get another source on this since the above was true for the German PS3 version and a German PC Collectors Edition ordered from Austria so unless they did something really drastic specifically for the German steam version it's all good.
e: Steam shows Interface/Subtitles for all languages available and full audio exclusively for English. Looks clear to me.

What the fuck! I just tried like 30 times at least at the Pursuer. I never ever had to try a Boss more than 5-6 times in Dark Souls. I proably fucked up at least 10-15 tries because I wanted to hit him with a Balista or tried to parry him and failed, but well I have not raged so hard in a while. I had mostly the Deprieved Starting Gear, I killed him first try after I bought the Falconer Armor. Not sure if it was Luck or if the Armor really made a difference. Well at least Dark Souls 2 is way way harder for me than DS1 until now. Maybe ist just the Deprived who sucks so badly (at the beginning).
Glad I beat this sucker after like 2hrs and 3 Effigy. :x

I beat the game [ps3] and the only enemy that I can recall that stopped respawning was the first two shield knights in Heide Tower. It takes like 10-15 kills to cause that to happen. Personal preference, I'm with you: I would rather the enemies didn't respawn, but I can see a link between the enemies despawning and the use of Bonfire Ascetics to "fix" that and expose the longer-term goal of the game to see you play through multiple times.
re: modding the only thread I saw on reddit that was posted today seems to be deleted, so ? I guess.

I guess. It should be noted that the despawning (it happens after 15 kills which is a LOT) exists to carry people who are really bad through the game somehow. On top of that there are a lot of mechanics in place that are trying to give you a little shove towards NG+ which, unlike DS1, is actually a new game with more enemies here and there, different and more drops etc. etc.
Despawning enemies really only get annoying when you're trying to farm specific items which can be a pain in the ass.

Played couple of hours, damn game kicking my ass. The moving feels a bit different, dodging is also a bit harder and the counter mechanic confused me at first. Now I know that if I parry someone I better don't R1/R2 him too soon lol.
Also, random thing: these slow/weird pig-like creatures in Majula, near the big building guarding who know what - seriously, what are these? Met them first time, I thought it's some easy souls coming my way and I couldn't be further from the truth. My poor dagger was doing almost no damage to them :C

Game mechanics spoilers related to rolling, I guess: Find ways to increase your agility (you can see it on the level up screen and which skills can increase it should be highlighted when you have a stat selected) to improve your rolling. Adaptability and Attunement both increase it, whichever one you choose should be based on your build type. Adaptability is much better in this regard, with attunement you get fewer agility points but you can attune more spells. There are "Soft Caps" to your stats that can be found on the wikidot http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/stats In general 20 and 40 are those points, getting a stat to 20 if you want to use that stat is never bad as it will have the most impact per point. edit: unspoiled, then!!

I wouldn't spoil that, it's pretty important: Agility is a really good stat. Invulnerability on your roll lasts longer and you use items faster too. Think chugging Estus takes forever? It's not in your head, it's definitely slower than DS1. Pump that AGL. It softcaps at 110.

My razer onza TE controller stopped working... just constantly looks down. /sigh
mouse/keyboard while improved is still godawful for this game so I guess that's it for me tonight. This really sucks.

Man there are a tonne of people having problems with the game just crashing to a white screen or something. Related to HDMI or somethin, which is weird, im going from DVI-->HDMI and am not getting the same error. Sucks for those guys, almost 700 posts in that thread on the Steam forums, shitt deal.
On topic, fuck this game is awesome, going to try a new character, Sorcerer, for the funsies. If i start a new game, will it erase my previous character? Stupid question i know, i dont see why they would delete an old character, but better be safe than sorry!

No, you can have multiple characters.

I heard that there was some modding going on in DS1, is there anything that fixes this ridiculousness out of the game here? Or is it only graphics? You could just pop a Bonfire Ascetic and play through the area again in NG+ mode if you want to or play as a member of that champions covenant, but since you implied that you die a lot already I'm not sure whether that's a good idea. You want the game to be super hard, but at the same time, if you actually die fifteen times in the same area, you do not really seem to learn much. No matter how hard each area was in Dark Souls 1, I don't think I ever died the full fifteen times before getting to a new bonfire. On the other hand, if you keep dying to the boss but pretty much effortlessly make your way to him through all the enemies, I doubt that having to take them on one by one every single time would be something many people would like to do.

Fast question: + Show Spoiler +does lighting all the torches in tutorial area give you anything? There's a tip to do so, but I went back, light'em all and can't see anything new :F

this is me, so fucking bored and caffeinated for no reason. it seems to be something to do with HDMI and/or nvidia video cards, I have the latter and am pretty terrible with computers so there's nothing for me to do but wait for the patch that might or might not be coming in the next 24 hours. I've gone unspoiled on 98% of the game's content so far but I might start watching streams just for something to do.
