Enemies have a tendency to attack what's in range once they are engaged from what I've seen. Are you playing on hard ? I had to reload a few combats in + Show Spoiler +that temple below the tree until I could get used to the combat. The tutorial doesn't do a great job preparing you for what's next. It's very important to use as much per encounter abilities as you can.
With my Cipher Fighter+ Show Spoiler +Wizard + Show Spoiler +party I usually put the fighter first with a knockback while my Cipher launch either a confusion or the level 2 spell that aoe paralyze.
This works for me on Hard
At least for level 1 of the temple, I quit at level 2, way too hard with 3 guys.

My impression so far is really mixed. I really dig the feel of the IE games but somehow the combat just doesn't feel right. I am not sure what is missing or what is just too much, but I just don't dig the combat system at all :/. So far it just feels like spamming the /combat abilities as much as possible and use the other abilities just as seldomly as possible tot save them in case you run out of campfires.
In all honesty, I just want the BG2 ruleset with the new story. Sad but true.

I was playing in the temple with party of 3, when I should have a party of 5 or 6 by then. No wonder I'm getting my ass kicked. bah..

So a fighter between the mage and enemies will force them to not move away from the fighter or really get crushed.
Then, i dont know how you play, but you probably dont value controlling abilities and status effects highly enough.
Maybe, as usual for RPG's for me I start my 1st character as a tanky fighter and go as simple as possible to learn the game, and this game is tearing me a new asshole, I didn't play any Infinity Engine game, but I like the challenge. Just didn't expect it to come so quickly in Normal... Anyway thanks for the tips.
That's old school style cRPGs for you, the early areas of the games can be some of the most challenging as you get to grips with the mechanics and have basic geared/levelled characters. Makes it rewarding when you engage them later in the game and the same enemies that gave you a hard time now feel easy as your character/party grows in power.
Lot of tributes/spiritual sequels coming to CLASSIC titles this year with Pillars of Eternity, War for the Overworld and Tides of Numeria. Without a doubt I am purchasing all 3 of these titles, will be a nice send off for me before I push aside the mouse and become a filthy console gamer.

This dungeon in the first town, what the fuck is that? There are mobs with 16 DR. I tried everything but can't clear the 2nd floor.

okay so im glad im not just a noob. got through some of lvl 2 temple with 3 party members but then i got a fight vs 2 shades 2 phantoms and i couldn't beat it. also playing hard

I love the + Show Spoiler + race. I dunno why, but seriously, I love the graphics and story on them.

Still going apart from an hour off to keep the other half happy for 8 hours. This game is incredible so far. The scripted interactions add so much atmosphere. Oh and the music is amazing. And it looks great...and..and...

Forget about level 2 it's too hard at the start.

I'm trying to fight + Show Spoiler +, but its impossible. The second the fight starts, 2 of my members get oneshot by the + Show Spoiler +, I already used every buff I had, but it makes no difference. All of my guys are level4 :x

It's too hard at the start but the shades/phantom are sensible to fire. Only 4DR against it.

Bears and Wolves sure are hard in hard mode, i'm guessing you're not supposed to solo kill them at the start?

Wolves are no problem but the two Bears in the Cave were unkillable until I came but with a 5-man Squad.

my cipher had no chance against 3 wolves, i came back later.
Also, the ARCHmage might be a hint to not fight at lvl 4? :D
|
I'm a filthy casual so I'm playing on normal but that temple in first town still gave me hellish time, many reloads were done. I did however manage to clear the entire temple in the end with party of 3x lvl 3. Definitely wouldn't have been doable on hard for me.

I just got destroyed by some mushroom buttholes.
I knew I shouldn't have fought them, LOL

He went down fast, when you focused him instantly. The problem were the 10 other guards with huge plate-armors. :/
