I recently did 2 Korea runs (with a couple of restarts), posted a few pics of the first one in this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/games/359510-europa-universalis-iv?page=142#2833
I focused on the manchu tribes first, Day1 DoW on Jianzhou (let Haixi do the fighting) because there's a mission to take one of their provinces. Then I usually fought Yeren and soon most of the Manchu land was mine. With Japan I wait for an independence war, jump in right when the war starts and declar on the daimyo trying to break free, occupy lots of land so Japan doesn't eat up too much and then create myself a nice vassals that fabricates claims all over Japan, super easy to take the rest of Japan after that.
Ming did give me a couple of headaches though. In the first game I fed them lots of my provinces so they blew up from overextension (see link). In my second long Korea run they left me alone and they're still remarkably strong in the late 1700s. In one war I sat on their lands to drive their war exhaustion to ~15ish, manpower close to 0 and the first rebels started to pop, I took my provinces and went on to focus on kebab thinking Ming would explode into 1000 pieces. Later I come back to see that only 3 or 4 countries broke free and later Ming even reintegrated one of them!

Off to a really good start. Picked Haixi and formed Manchu by 1450. Korchin and Yeren are my vassals. After I take out Buryatia, I'll go explode the Ming and see what i can do there.

It was a while since, but I played an ironman game as Korea on (I think) the Art of War patch. I remember that I played very defensively vs. Japan and instead focused on the Asian mainland. I think my strategy in that game was to ally Ming early on (and eventually Buryatia) and use that as a tool to win wars vs the Machurian nations and Korchin. Then I proceeded to taking advantage of Ming imploding to get their lands. After that point I remember that I had some back-and-forth wars with Oirat while being in general on the defensive side, mostly since Russia had arrived and Russias opinion of me switch back-and-forth quite a bit Do you think the tribes are easier to exploit or the shogun system of Japan is easier to exploit? I thought that I could use my superior navy to really break apart Japan by using the Osaka choke-hold. This part of the world seems to be a bit more difficult than I originally thought. Since I also did a game as Japan (where I was able to get a hand on Korea and a bit of (present day) China) I'd say it depends. If I had to say something, it is easier to focus on the Asian mainland but this depends on things like your current situation, what allies you and your enemies currently have and so on After a daimyo-independence war Japan will most likely be rather weak because those wars will cost lots of manpower from my experience. But on the other hand you will need a rather strong navy if you're going to initiate a war on Japan. My friend told me it was possible to create a big enough distraction on the Shikoku Island then pull out and trap a large force on the island. I usually can get a good navy lead so I can blockade those units on that Island while taking out chunks of the mainland Japan. Is that strategy still viable? I have never done that kind of strategy vs. Japan, but I have done similar stuff in other campaigns and it can be a really powerful strategy

Finished my goal of uniting Islam under glorious Ibadi rule. The constant 90+% overextension while I felt short on time was pretty bad, I may never do a WC after this experience. http://imgur.com/a/aU7AZ

I've been trying to replicate the island strategy with Japan but it seems to be harder from Korea than Sengoku. I think independence war might be the ideal time to make a move on Japan. How much ahead can you get with this strategy? Does it make fighting the Ming easier than the Manchu strategy?

Thanks for the response. I've been getting some work done in Manchu with your method. Ming seems to be strong in my campaign as well, it might be a side-effect of the lack of pressure from Manchu tribes because of their war against Korea.

Hey guys, how much do DLC's bring into the game? Is it worth buying full pack (basic + DLC) or basic is enough?
|
depends on wether you are just starting out or already have put hundreds of hours into the game. the DLCs increase the depths of parts of the game but the core gameplay stays the same, if you are new to EU4 you can just get the basic game and try it out for a couple of dozen hours without missing key elements to the game.

I paid full price for El Dorado and Common Sense and I regret neither. But I'm probably not going to get any of the earlier expansions, those two and ET mod are enough to keep me going indefinitely.

I'm mostly getting expansions during sales, so I really don't have to pay a lot to play those. I'm usually missing one major DLC at a time. That's another way to do it too.

When will we get a Horde DLC ...

So is there an event for Venice to become a Kingdom? Playing as Florence and formed Tuscany. I am allied to Venice and all of a sudden they offer me a royal marriage.

All republics (can) turn into monarchies if their republican tradition drops low.

Hey guys i want to whine a little.
Ironman, playing England having Aragon and Naples as lesser partners in PU. Also Norway, Dauphine ans Savoy as Vassals. Already conquered Isles, most of France and Holland. Going to war with Castile (with Portugal and Austria as allies). My Queen dies during the war and boom Union with Aragon and Naples broke. I beat them into submishion afterwards but i lost time, money and admin points to do it.
Here is why i hate it. I had relation with them (both) on 200 (and they to me also). Liberty desire 0%. Union stable for more than 50 years. And i also had very positive diplomatic reputation. I had a heir with a strong claim, he was of age (not under 15). They were strong, but still a lot weaker then i was. WHY this is happening? Is it scripted that unions broke 100% of time if Your king/queen dies during the war? I seem to have a lot of those happening to me. I even lost stability declaring war on them because i still had great relation with them.....

Since you did not mention your prestige, it might have been that you lost the union because you had negative prestige (switched to protestant earlier?)

How low does it need to be? I never saw it happening and it seems to be unlikely that the AI goes for that.
I got my dynasty on their throne and PU'd them now. How lucky is that.

"Republican government with low tradition can collapse into despotism, with noble rebel factions becoming increasingly likely below 66 and 33 tradition. Below 40, the ruler may declare himself the ruler of a republican dictatorship (or, for revolutionary republics, a revolutionary empire). This is more likely to happen with lower tradition, and also happens immediately if the ruler is re-elected with tradition below 20. When the ruler of a republican dictatorship dies with republican tradition below 50, it becomes a monarchy, of the most advanced type permitted by admin tech (except Constitutional Monarchy). Republican tradition does not normally increase during a dictatorship, but if it's above 50 when the ruler dies, the government reverts to whatever type it was before the dictatorship."
