.. Sadly (for me) I'll buy it. And almost certainly despite bracing myself for disappointment, be disappointed by it. Sucks, but that's exactly what I've grown to expect out of them.

Egypt was far and away the worst, though. Rome needs the somewhat toned down cavalry of Shogun 2 as well.

By that, do you mean that you thought Medieval 2 was bad? (Just wondering, as that's one of my favourites in the franchise) I personally really enjoyed (and still do), Shogun 2, but I can see why others would be disappointed by it and even more so by Empire/Napoleon. My experience with Shogun 2 still can't quite match my memories of playing the original Shogun, nor my memories of playing Rome/Medieval2. I'm really not sure what to think of Rome 2 at the moment. Overall, I'm optimistic, but some of the things they've described/hinted at could definitely go either way. In particular, the mention of there being less micro management during the real-time battles stands out to me as a potential game-breaker/maker, depending on exactly how it's implemented.

Reading this interview I can't agree with the focus the lead dev seems to have. The focus seems to be taking away tasks from the player and making the game easier to manage. The goal should be to enhance the core mechanics instead of adding a bunch of new mechanics that do not synergise well with what the game stands for. I mean, look at DOTA2, the game is really good and all Valve did was provide basics for the Esports scene and a few cosmetic items. The TW series is all about being an emperor, commander and king, you manage your empire and have the ability to control your legions on the map and on the battlefield. I really hope the devs stay true to the game and don't get entangled trying to add gimmicks everywhere. I didn't buy Fall of the Samurai because there simply wasn't any gameplay available before launch. Here's to hoping that'll change for Rome II. The Roman era is just perfect for a game like this, I just hope Sega/Creative make a game that they are proud to show everyone.

This may sound petty but it's something that scares me that they'll be as ridiculously inaccurate as the previous one =/

The citizen armies were reliant upon their own men buying their equipment. It's not like each armorer would make the same exact armor. The shields, for example, ranged from red to different blues to yellow and maybe some other colors I can't think of (green maybe, not sure). This may sound petty but it's something that scares me that they'll be as ridiculously inaccurate as the previous one =/ It makes it so much easier to tell whose units are whose, and it looks prettier. It might not be historically accurate, but it makes for much better gameplay and casual appeal. If you want, hopefully (fingers crossed) you'll be able to mod accurate uniforms into the game yourself.

It was bad when I started with the series with Medieval 2, it got a tad better because Empire was the best game in the series (and had mostly ranged combat) and then it got really bad again when they rolled around with Shogun 2. The combat in Empire was horrible imo, all you did was walk lines of the same guys with guns at eachother with a few cannons thrown in. Shogun also had a very limited range of units. One of the things I loved the most about RTW was the huge differences between armies of each of the factions.

Those screenshots look way too brown.

But I am also a little afraid that the AI will be as shit as always and the game will be as buggy on release as always :p Mods will improve on these as always. Shogun 2 with Darthmod has decent AI. On the other hand I really really hope they make naval battles interesting, empire naval was meh and shogun 2 naval was garbage. It's cute but its too slow, too messy and just weird.
