With the NDA lifted, I am now free to speak about (hopefully) the next ESPORTS FPS from Nadeo : ShootMania.
For those who do not know Nadeo at all, it is a small french studio that created Trackmania. The motto of this studio is to create fast paced, easy to learn, hard to master games. They have already acknowledged that Shoomania was develloped with ESPORTS in mind ( those who have assisted to the Ubisoft E3 presentation migth remember the small match that took place).
As for the game itself, as I stated earlier, it is extremely straigthforward. Only six button (up down left rigth shoot jump). One weapon at a time, no powerups (armor packs, health packs etc..). The weapon you possess depends on the block you are standing on.
- Rocket launcher (standard weapon) : Launches energy bubbles, note that the splash do not damage, but will blow you away. Does 1 damage. You regain 1 ammo per second, up to a maximum of 4.
- Rail Gun (available on rail platforms) : Deals 2 damage ( insta kill on most mods), 3 sec reloading time.
- Nucleus (available underground): launches slow projectile that can attach themselfs to wall and will AOE detonate if someone comes close. Last 4 seconds.
- Arrow : Cast a projectile with a big AOE on explosions. Think of it as a grenade launcher where the grenade exploding at the first obstacle it hits.
The game comes with a complete map editor ( extremely similar to the trackmania map editor), as well as a script editor which will allow you to create your own game rules. Here are the current Official modes mods in the game:
- Mellee : Basic FFA. Each time you hit a enemy, you gain 1 point, most points wins.
- Royal : Survival FFA. Last one alive wins. A pole can be captured which will create an offzone circle centered around the pole, that will become smaller as time passes. Simply Hiding wont work !
- Joust: 1v1 mod. You start with no ammo, and you have to capture poles to regain some ammo. The capture is instantaneous, but ammo management is key here
- Elite : 3v3. This is the current tournament mode. This is played as multiple 1v3 games, where the solo attacker is armed with a railgun and must capture a pole defended by the 3 player of the opposing team ( each defender having a 'rocket launcher')
- Combo 2v2 : This mode is very different from the other as it is the only mode to feature item pick up as well as weapon switching . Each team start with 4 rocket ammo. Each time you pick up an item, your team gains one max ammo for the corresponding weapon ( Rail/Nucleus/Arrow). To win, both your opponent must be dead at the same time. EAch time you die, your re spawn timer increases.
Of course more mods will be created by the users.
I suggest discussing past and upcoming Shootmania tournament here too.

I am considering this, I want an invite ):
Also, will this be on Steam?
|
seems nice. unfortunatly no time to play. damn you exams. >.>
also heared that some of the quake pros will transition (2GD said that once). dunno if its comparable.
|
I assume it will be free to play in much the same way Trackmania was?
|
Wow i'd love to play, always a huge fan of shooters these days especially new ones (esp after tribes disappoint D
Looking forward to playing when i can
|
this will be free or pay-to-win or what kind of shenanigans regarding money will there be ?
|
Do you need to buy a Nadeo game to get a ManiaPlanet account? played older TrackMania versions a lot on LAN, not my fav, but was always cool to calm down with after more stressful games.
Pretty interested in Shootmania, but through the website it isnt obvious for me how i can create a ManiaPlanet account, signed up for info on the Shootmania beta on the Shootmania page, but haven't got any confirmation mail
|
From what I know, the game wont be free to play. It will most likely be around 30€, and you should be able to buy it using maniaplanet ( which will act a bit like steam for all nadeo games). This also means that the game will not be available on steam.

You don't need to buy a game, you will receive a download link with your alpha key. At least that's what they did for me...

Looks interesting, unfortunately I'm TERRIBLE at Quake-style shooters, my precision is WAY too low. Watching the tournament vod, every single kill looked ridiculous, basically oneshots from a distance where you opponent is about a pixel big. I'd probably never get a kill.

Actually, its not written anywhere but you cant hit a single pixel with the rail gun. If you play or watch a Vod, you'll notice that the railgun has 3 smal dots on the cross hair. The railgun actually lunches 3 rails ( but it looks like one because they are so close) and all three have to hit for the rail hit to succeed ( I'm not sure this is very clear ^^' ). So you wont be advantaged if you play with a better resolution
I'v updated the OP with the vod of the SOPA lan, and the link of the stream of this WE tournament : the Cyber Athlete Submit in Paris. Colwn and Millenium are the favorite Imho, but who knows what will happen.

There is a stream for the Cyberathelet Summit Shootmania Finals on own3d http://www.own3d.tv/Cybsum
Really great games being played with many known players from FPS games like Quake.

The game looked really good. Is there like an alpha key giveaway that I can get into?
|
Looks like a fancier instagib from UT. TBH, not sure how such a fast paced game will play out for viewers
|
Unfortunaly, I'm out of alpha key for now . if I get more, i'll organize a TL givaway
You can still sign up for the upcoming Beta ( http://www.shootmania.com/en/ ). No date announced yet tho
|
Loving it so far, will play some more tomorrow

they are clearly not going for a CS style tactical shooter, so to completely throw out the mechanics of arena-style fps seems strange if they actually want to make an esport out of it
but i suppose if there's a scripting feature, you could rig up a proper duel mode. the problem would be getting the game's community to solidify around it, without a developer stamp of approval the community can only fracture
|
Where can we get a key?... Looks really interesting, I definitely wanna try it
|
The game is pretty good, I have been playing it for a week now, and I enjoy it quite much.
But I am very pessimistic regarding the community, I had forgotten how bad a FPS community can be... Regarding FPS, I have been only playing Quake on and off for the last 5 years, which had a pretty nice community, but so far, it seems that every time I play Shootmania, I see people insulting each other.
The game is only in alpha, and for most games I have played pre-release, the community was always much better during alpha/beta stages compared to release, so I can't even imagine what it could be like for Shootmania, maybe some new monster worst than Counter-Strike and Call Of Duty combined ?
I don't know what Nadeo can do about it, I really have no idea, but if it stays like that, there is no way I'll be playing this...

Well i'm not sure what they will do about the community. For myself, i didnt have much truble, but i mostly play with friends, and we have our own server ( it's not hard to set up), so no community issue :p
But lets go to the main point : BETA IS ABOUT TO START
Here is how it works :
- Register for the beta at http://www.shootmania.com/en BEFORE JULY 2nd
- You will receive a 7 day pass to test the game
- If you like the game, you'll be able to buy it in advance, and keep playing after you 7 day pass has expired ( The cost should be around the same that Trackmania)
More info here : http://blog.maniaplanet.com/blog/2012/06/27/information-regarding-the-beta/

Shootmania Team USA e3 champions Mercenary Ops streaming at www.twitch.tv/masternook ! good games good music with web cam

Beta started for Alpha testers! Basically everyone who was in alpha got few keys to give away so they can get their friends in. I'd guess the beta for everyone who signed up should start in few days as well. Hopefully this will spark some more conversation on this game, seeing as it's pretty promising title. Having made the switch from Tribes to this I can say I'm happy how things are looking.
|
omg i forgot to sign up does anyone have a key for me would be amazing?
|
Very interested in trying this game. Been looking for a competitive FPS. Sadly I failed to sign up for the beta, hope its good at release though.
|
I got 2 promotional codes by being in alpha if anyone wants one.(You use them to sign up for 7 days of beta)
|
I want a promotional code please ):
|
Balls I didn't manage to sign up in time! Does anyone have an extra key? I'd be forever in your debt.
|
I would like to try it as well, if anyone has an extra key/account.

I'm interested as well if anyone has an extra beta code

So, for people who have tried this, is it anything like Quake/Unreal Tournament?
|
About to try now.
edit: jumping is definitely not like Quake, it's a bit higher and there's a bit of grav. edit: shooting feels slower and the stamina effect is a bit odd, even clunky maybe. edit: they need to increase movement speed, fix the jumping, not make right-click jump + stamina edit: is there melee or at least zoom?
|
Anyone want to trade a CS:GO key for this?
|
i got an cs:go key , but already used and its in account with some other games

This interface for battles is brutal (HUD)

I registered for beta week before 2nd July and didnt get anything... :/

Stamina gets a while to get used to, but once you master it ,you will be running fast enough .Of course running come with a riskx, which is having to jump before. It was confirmed that this mechanicwould not change.
Also there is a 'hidden' 10% speed increase if you arenot on grass.( but on a road/stone block).
There is no zoom ,unless you stand on a rail platform, in which case you wont be able to jump.

Beta is out, www.twitch.tv/masternook . I was the #1 ranked american player in alpha, will demonstrate different moves and jukes with highest level of aim. Come check it out now
|
The timings a re a bit difficult for me, everything feels slightly too slow.
|
|
Just got my Beta key, game's great except for the UI, as expected.
They really need to hire a good UX/Interface Designer, I'm really tired of the Trackmania/Shootmania UI they use, it's so unbearably bad it almost ruins the amazing gameplay
|
Just discovered the 3v3 srs mode and the duel mode, when you're on that shitty UI at the load of the game, click on load station at the right and add the two other modes.

Aw damn. Looks like I was late for the beta.
Oh well, I hope this game does well. Quake Live's steady decline made me wonder if we'd ever see a popular fast-paced FPS game again, but this game at least gives me some hope. Movement looks a bit slow and weird, though, but I guess I'd have to try it before I comment too much on it.

I registered several accounts and got jack shit.

Got into the beta, but their website appears to be in the process of exploding.

edit 2: nevermind

IMPORTANT: You must activate your Beta Key before the 31st of July. Once your Beta key is activated, your access to the game will last for 7 days. An email will be sent to you explaining how to keep playing ShootMania Storm after the end of your 7 days... Well, that kinda weird. Does anyone know what happens after those 7 days?

Even if you can get into the website once you click download you get sent to a screen that has this message:
Sorry due to the peak traffic on the e-Store, you have been put in the queue. Please wait until you get redirected to the payment page.* * No need to refresh this page, you will be automatically redirected to the payment page once you’ve reached your turn in the waiting line.
Been waiting on that page for like forty minutes now lol. About to go to work too so I guess I'll just try and download it later tonight or something. Pretty hyped for this game though.

Don't really know about players from Asia but there's few aussie servers and there's some NA servers too. Majority of players are from EU though and so are the servers.

Something about the character movement in this game feels weird. Maybe I just need to play more and get used to it, but something feels really strange. I don't know how to articulate what I mean when I say it is weird. Sticky kind of, or maybe a bit clunky? I dunno.
But the gameplay is pretty great so far. I've played a crazy jailbreak game and DM and a bunch of other modes. So as long as they keep innovating and making new maps for fun modes I'll prolly play a bit.
|
Well, I finally got it installed after going through the most uncessarily convuluted process to install something I have ever seen.
|
Pre-Order is available now!
|
This game won't make it far unless community makes a lot of effort, the movement is terrible. Maps are terrible. Two guns? Cmon.. I can't see how this game would make an "e-sport". Good thing is i guess the ability to mod, best gamemods comes from the community.
|
Kinda funny that the preorder is the same price for USD and Euros. Also sad that us poor swiss can't even pay in our own currency (since the VAT in swiss is lower than in Europe it would save some money).
Well.. I nearly snap buy 5copy and in the end I might buy none.
Btw... I notice that you can only buy "Storm"... does it mean that they plan on selling "Joust" and "Elite" modes also?
Except that, the game is quite nice, some lags issues and that feeling that you don't shoot where you aim (might be explained by the fact that I mostly play drunk or high).

I was so bored last night that I freaking preordered on an impulse. $16 isn't life threatening to my bank account but one of these days I'm going to get burned by it @_@. luckily for me the game turned out to be pretty fun. the movement and aiming takes a lot to get used to though. I don't know why they didn't just standardized it. I'm looking forward to more weapon updates since the game's current issue is lack of complexity.

Ever see quake? Has like three guns that people use. The maps are tiny but extremely high skill ceiling. That's exactly what this game is aiming for (high skill ceiling) because that's what competitive e-sports type people want. Not Call of bullshit with 400 guns 397 of which do the exact same thing.
|
Quake has 3 main weapons (rail, rocket, LG), but other useful weapons too such as the shotgun, grenade launcher, and plasma (last 2 being very good area denial weapons). The maps in Quake may be small but are insanely tactical. I'm not sure how tactical shootmania will be with its simplicity. I really think this game needs something more so that it is not just a flash in the pan.

I had a 7-day beta a while ago and got a new 30-day beta 2 days ago which I haven't started yet. Coming from a Q/UT background I played exclusively Joust and I had a lot of fun with it. A matchmaking system and a ladder and I'd play the shit out of that game.

Oh long time since I last played UT!! UT 2 <3

Shootmania is now on Steam and has Open Beta. So you can basicly play for free till the game comes out I think.
Couldn't get the demo working on Steam, but the Maniaplanet launcher does work.
|
I wish more people played this game. I generally like what they did with beginner servers but if you've advanced past beginner servers but aren't quite ready for elite yet, there aren't a ton of other options. If there were more players, I'd think the non-beginner royal servers would be more populated. Been playing a lot of joust in the meantime, but sometimes it's hit and miss with people being on those servers.
|
Shootmania got released on Steam now and i'm wondering what the general opinion is.
I saw it on TBs channel a while back and it didn't really look very interesting. The developers also seemed to have a "We'll release something very basic and let the community mod it into something good" attitude that i don't agree with.
So how is the game? Is it worth picking up?
|
I'm gonna update the OP "soon", most probably this WE. (meanwhile, if a mod could remove the ALPHA tag from the title, i would really appreciate )
The game is good. There is a lot of new features that has been added since beta that removed the 'this game is too simple' factor that existed in the alpha/beta. This includes new moves ( wall jumps, shooting down rockets with rail... ), new block with special effects ( wooden plank, fast path, grapple points etc..), new features that were not possible ( weapon switching, item pick up..). I think it has enough complexity to really become THE competitive FPS.
It will remain however community driven. The developers have clearly stated taht they want the community to create the maps/ game mode they want to play. Right now the competitive mode is Elite (3v3, 1 attacker with rail vs 3 defender with rockets each round), but i could see the new combo mode (2v2 with items and weapon switching) being really popular too. I'm not really sure what you dislike about this, but it will remain so.
If you like fast paced FPS like quake/UT, you should probably try it. The basics modes ( Royal, Elite and Joust) are Free To Play if I am not mistaken. So try it for free
|
I really like this game as a spectator. its very easy to watch because you can just follow the attacker.
rounds get pretty intense with the timer. I also like how on one end it takes a lot of team work to defend but with the attacker you also need individual skill.

I'm sure I could see myself enjoying the play, but it is so drab to watch the comp matches.

Hmmm....
I've played a few games in Battle and Royal now and have to say that i'm not convinced of it at all.
While the movement and the maps feel ok, the combat and general gameplay is very underwhelming. The slow projectiles of the guns make the combat very luck based at anything other than point blank range. You have to predict where the enemy will ADAD-wobble next and hope that he jumps so you get an easy hit. Aiming is quite pointless since the enemy can have moved over half the map before the projectile reaches the place he was at, so, unless the enemy is simply stupid and moves straight in one direction, it's mostly spamming in the general direction and hoping one of the projectiles hit.
Are there any modes with a variety of weapons, health/armor pickups and such that feel more like Quake?

I personally think the weapons are fine. The rocket is a bit slower than in quake, but not enough not make it unusable in a middle ranged figth.
You migth want to give a try to the combo mode. It is still very different from quake, but includes armor pick-up and weapon pick-up. I will edit the OP with the new available modes as soon as the mods unlock it ( old OPs cannot be edited).
