for new people mmos are completely overwhelming.
So they start slow and introduce you slowly to everything. This includes easy combat at trhe beginning. If you are bored, you can attack lvl 5 mobs as level 1 and have your mortal danger.
Also, noone ever is forcing you to do sidequests, especially the level 1 ones that make you run around the city for an hour. You can just not do it.

Has anyone tried logging on during peak hours? Are you place in Queue or just given the world is too full error? I'm hoping to do a lot of playing tonight!!

You level up extremely fast in this game. By the time you're level 7, which is probably 15-20 minutes, you already have 3-4 skills, and as you pick up the skills in order you learn little things about them such as chaining, positioning, properties, etc. depending on your class.
Can't skip the opening cutscenes which is a bummer, but you can skip almost all the other cutscenes in game.
Quests are boring, I agree.
I'm kinda new to MMOs (only played FFXI for 4 months, and that was at release) so I don't know a lot of what's going on, but so far the entire game has been pretty easy and grindy. Gonna hit 30 on my Archer soon but DPS is boring as hell.
I'm sticking to gathering/crafting for now.

I'm at lvl 36 now and it's getting really fun during boss fights. But getting to this point, wow, just way too simple IMO.
So far I've found the leveling/progression aspect much more boring than SWTOR (the only other mmo I played a lot). On the flip side the boss mechanics are much better in FF14.

Titan hard mode went down, it was so hard for my guild with the 800-900 ms delay from Europe. Had like 50 trys or more. We got dem epic weaponz

On the flip side the boss mechanics are much better in FF14. This is what worries me the most about the game. I only got to lvl 12-15 or so in the beta as a gladiator, so my only experience is that limited, but it seemed like skill progression was ridiculously slow and there was almost no tactic to skill usage what so ever... use the damage combo as fast as possible, dodge red areas, pop cooldowns at the right times (which is pretty much as soon as possible when solo questing). Obviously use the aggro combo and the taunt if tanking for a group.
I realize lvl 15 is nothing, but like you say, it seems that even more than halfway through the levels, it's still just a very small amount of skills and very simple rotations. I'm not saying Wow had amazingly complex rotations, but there was a lot of optimization that could be done which was enjoyable IMO. I loved to play dps warrior because the difference in damage between a lazy rotation and an optimized rotation was massive and required quite a bit of concentration... is there any chance FFXIV has anything like that in the end-game?
Also, could someone compare healing between WoW and FFXIV? I've never had as much fun as when I healed heroics at the start of cataclysm on my holy priest... you had to use spells almost perfectly before the heroics were nerfed and better gear was widely available, but I can't imagine healing working like this in FFXIV since it has to be playable on controller.. in Wow, I had the grid mod which allowed me perfect control and overview over the whole party, what buffs I had going where etc... It was hectic as hell, but ridiculously fun.

So far everything to 30 has just been tank and spank. Hell, I beat Hala-tali as DPS even though I was not in the boss fight since I wanted to watch the cutscene and the tank just ran in the boss chamber.

EU servers are hosted on NA apparently.

So as a Eu customer its not worth spending money on, good to know

There are alot EU playing, and the lag is not that bad. Friend mate from Sweden plays with about 250-300 ping, while not ideal, is not impossible to overcome.

At lvl 36 I have my full standard rotation (1,2,3) as well as some other abilities that I have to mix in. Along with the standard rotation, during a boss fight I'll try to keep my DoT (Phlebotomize) up constantly along with my damage buffing attack (Heavy Thrust which requires positioning). Additionally I have a 1 attack buff auto-crit on a 60s CD that I time with no. 3 in my standard rotation, and a 20s buff on a 80s CD. I also have to mix in my Jump attack (ignores global cool down) when availabe and some defensive buffs if needed.
Yesterday I beat Titan for the first time and it was quite a bit of fun. There were some good boss mechanics and I had to constantly keep my rotation going, my buffs and DoT up and do a bit of positioning as well.
The problem I've had with the game is that you get new skills and abilities so slowly. It does ramp up to more funsies, but the early game is abysmally simple.
Edit: While I'm on it, early game quests also suck. "Go to the forest and kill a bunch of lady bugs and squirrels". Fuck you Square!!!

It might be due to your IPS routing to particular network >.< Sucks for you but you are still making great progress!

The game does get more difficult as you get higher In level; mobs do more damage, Inflict dots/debufffs, dungeons get more difficupt and require better/precise timing and awareness to not die during fights, and you need to kanage your MP/TP and GCDs better to. I'm a 45 Bard and Garuda normal mode took me a good hour or two to kill with a pug group, as we had to learn her timings, positioning and when to use the LBs.

How is endgame? I'm stuck doing FATES from 32 - 35 atm.
|
There is certain mindless grinding (Keep), but the challenging stuff is pretty challenging. Even as someone started with 50s there are a ton to do. Yoshi said that he expect the # of people on all servers to complete the Bahamut 5 stage to be less than 100 when 2.1 come out. I'm not sure it will be that few though. In addition, there are a lot material to farm / gather, equipment to make. You have to be REALLY dedicated to be anywhere near running out of stuff.

Endgame is the best endgame I've ever seen in a game. This is the best MMO I've experienced so far, and I tried many.
