I'm trying to figure out how to manipulate the economy.
I decided to level miner first, leveling it primarily over my DoW class, but I seem to have hit some bumps in the road.
The "hot" mining points that I've encountered are Iron Ore, Alumen, Silver Ore, Bomb Ash, and now Mythril Ore.
What I had banked on was that DoF classes would be rightfully boring to play as, and so that DoH classes would desperately need materials, which was why I would rush DoF.
Unfortunately, I miscalculated the intelligence (and perhaps, the log in times) of the community. Materials are being priced very strangely and Mythril Ore isn't paying off compared to Bomb Ash and Silver Ore. Furthermore, the worth of HQ materials isn't particularly set; they aren't being as valued as they should be. Crafters selling gear on the Market Board aren't pricing it intelligently, often times pricing them way more than what you can get from a vendor. And lastly, Gil seems really cheap. People doing quests and FATE grinding probably earn more than a DoF selling to the market.
I am considering hoarding mats, and buying cheaply priced mats and then turning around and selling them for more. Some people are trying to undercut and I feel like I can turn it around by getting the undercut stuff and just pricing it high. I'm still thinking about what would be the better way. I do think that Mythril Ore will upswing on my server pretty soon, and that there just aren't enough smiths at the level to use it right now.

FATE:
Behemoth fate and Odin fate are far worse, you can't see the mob unless you are melee, and even then it's iffy.

You want to push one craft as hard as possible, if you are the only one or two person who can make the highest tier of gear, you will make ridiculous amount of money. Same with gathering, they only worth money if you can get what others can't. Also since leveling is pretty fast, and quest reward many equipment, there isn't any much demand until much higher level (people can easily get away with not buying a single piece of gear until 50). If you are not at the top you are better off focus on what has a very high consumption rate (craft grinding material for example).

I've been thinking about it like that, but that seems pretty rudimentary and doesn't match with the current market model.
On top of that, I'm pretty behind on Miner, there were probably 3-4 other people mining Mythril Ore when I was doing it. Certainly not as many as were mining Iron/Alumen.
The reason why I bring up Mythril Ore is because on my server, Cactuar, it's only selling for 35, when Bomb Ash is in the tier behind it and selling for 45.
And I think crafters can certainly make a killing off of the market right now, especially in the level 20-30 range. The items I've seen for sale on the market board are ridiculously overpriced compared to vendors and therefore *not* selling, and thus prices for higher tier mats like Mythril/Bomb Ash are pretty much only being set for the sake of selling to smiths so that they can level up, not so they can actually sell things. Even if you are the only level 50 miner, the level 50 smith can't sell to anyone anyway, therefore I think it makes more financial sense to corner the market and purchase all the mats if you can afford it. And if you can't, it's better to hoard your stuff than to sell it now.
I hope by tomorrow or the day after there are some more servers so that digital downloads can resume. I've been critical about the game, especially this launch, but I am still eager to play it and try it - especially because it's not a full $60.00.

I'm kinda in progress of doing the same thing in Diablos server. I'm up to level 28 mining/26 goldsmith and currently own the market on siltstone wheystones. Prices get to the point of being profitable on my server around level 20-25 items. I just check the market after checking out different mining areas and mine 2-3 different things in mass that are selling for the most.
I don't know if the grinding money is better that market selling yet, the market seems pretty barren to me and I've made at least 50k in the last 2 days...far more than my questing/FATE grinding on my BLM.

I may have to reevaluate what I just said. According to a post on reddit, there aren't many gil fountains in end game(things that create gil in the world), so incoming deflation could be a problem and things could actually be massively overpriced right now. This could be something I have to monitor closely. This may be why top end crafting mats are cheaper, because they just can't *afford* it whereas all the idiots are blowing their money on the low level mats like iron ore.
Questing can earn you a lot of money, but it's finite. And the money comes from getting Allagash pieces as your reward.
Right now I'm sitting pretty at over 100k, most of it earned from selling Alumen, Silver Ore, and Bomb Ash.
Gonna consider trying to corner the market on certain mats in the next few days... (I find this way more fascinating than the combat, lol.)
So it seems like you can buy crafting mats from vendors to level from 1-20, but not afterwards? Guess I need to take up some gathering to fuel my Weaving.
Anyway, guessing how the market is going to turn out is always a crapshoot with these games. You can always try to guess whats going to become valuable, but my typical play is to find a niche that I enjoy most. In FF11 I farmed crystals (shards? forget what they were called) in vanilla wow I was king of black lotuses.

If you want a good item to corner the market on, go with diremite webs, it just takes a large initial investment. Its the 21-31 crafting material for weavers, drop only item. On my server (leviathan) your looking at 250-400 per single web, and you use alot. I can't actually afford to buy the market out and reprice, its too expensive, but if you can afford it thats a good roadblock to exploit.
The only way around it is to spam the lvl 20 weaver leve for pants, which takes a ton of cotton which costs as well, and you end up running dry on crystal shards extremely fast which cost a fortune to replace as well. Even if most people avoid diremite, its still very useful to pick some up to make your BIS crafting gear for around level 30, so people WILL buy it. Even if for nothing else than to get the discoveries in their logs.
Looking around at various items, I don't think I have found one that's more of a cockblock.
If you want to make money with a gathering profession, you have to be level 46+ in that profession. I hit lvl 46 with botanist yesterday late afternoon/night and have made 350k gil since. I cant imagine how much gil the people who leveled a gathering profession as early release dow/dom have made. Probably 2 million +? This is because its not until lvl 46 that you can harvest the rare spawn mining/botanist stuff. Every one that wants their relic weapons must buy items harvested from these professions.
You cant simply decide to lvl miner/botanist a week after everyone else has hit max level and hope to be raking in the gil. The lvl 40+ quest rewards start including 4-6 ish silver allagan pieces or 1-2 gold pieces each. Gold pieces are worth 2500 gil a piece. Youll reach max level with a dom/dow class close to 280k gil if you always choose the allagan piece rewards, or around 200k gil if you actually choose an upgrade now and then, so its kinda of meaningless to level a gathering profession as the first thing you do now.
i guess ill have to start screwing people over on the market if endgame only costs money and doesnt generate it. Not looking forward to it, i know how to do it, but i prefer to just play my class and stay even.
There aren't that many people at high level gathering yet, its extremely time consuming to get there, and from what I understand the spots to gather from are pretty rare, beyond that people want the HQ version of the rare items, which can only get up to 4% chance from what I have read.
But I am also not there yet, and probably wont be for quite a while, so im just going off what my crafting LS talks about, not personal experience.
The rare spawns have preset locations that spawn on a set timer based on in game time, there are guides online, although they dont list all of the locations. I dunno how many people have enough perception to be able HQ rare spawns on a non-legacy server since you basically need all green gear with lvl III materia in all materia slots to be able to access HQ. Probably no more than 1-2 per server at best, although i havent seen any of them yet.

you can tell me! Also, are there some mobs that i can grind for mats? I absolutley love grinding mobs for an hour or two, would be good if i could make that into gamemonies.
ALSO, what do you people think about scholar vs whitemage? I am currently a scholar, but i am not so sure anymore.
The pet AI is terrible. I have to use tthe pets basic heal every 2.5 seconds manually since the AI will take a good 1.5 second break for every cast. Also, the "do nothing" stance gets overwritten whenever i order the pet do do anything....for example heal. So its basically impossible to prevent the pet from using the AE heal on cooldown. Which i find problematic since my only other AE is half a shield, so it doesnt top people off without wasting huge mana.
