I was almost interested in giving this a go but mirkz and his barely hidden venom regarding starcraft is just too much. I don't even like sc2 but trying to put across that this game is deeper and more about your brain than broodwar? zz

No one ever mentioned broodwar , I didnt even play it.

I played starcraft II since WoL came out and I still kinda like it .. but trust me FA is so much deeper...if you're looking for something deeper. It's not "venom" ... it's matter of fact.

On the other hand , did you try Forged Alliance ?? No....

Campaign is nice Since you could pay 1$ for both supcom1 and forged alliance I think you should just buy & try P

Well i depends what you guys mean with deeper. Supcom has much more variability because of the huge maps and the shitload of units but in terms of micro its lacking. Atleast compared to Broodwar. They are just 2 completly different types of RTS.

Why is it difficult to understand that a game might be deeper about more global strategy than broodwar?

On steam it's 9,99€ for either off both for me? If guess if I want to play the campaign from start I have to get both, right?

Yes, although they are stand alone games so you could just get one and not the other if you wanted to.

If that was true, i wouldnt mind, but it's quite clearly not, not to mention the guy has clearly never played BW at any decent level.

Fair play then. It probably is better than sc2, but lets be honest, thats not very hard, the game is crap and only gets its fanbase from name alone. =) for the record i played the original supcom but i found it to be slow, tedious and very limited =)

Edit: Would you like to give me reasons why FA is "deeper"? It's basically a macro game that requires slow brain and slow hand =)

Because it most likely isnt
havent actually seen an RTS yet that is.

Deeper than SC2 maybe, but not BW.

It is a macro game where you hardly ever hit the max unit cap (half sc2 games it is a consideration in). You have the same possible actions as in SC2, only with more units and possible fronts. It is common in 1v1 to have three active fronts going on at once where dodging shots from artillery or tanks can mean winning 2v3 with the same units. Drop ships, air etc. The only thing it doesn't have is spell casting.

So, it's a slower and more simple broodwar? That's cool and all but dont pretend like its the messiah of RTS gaming when broodwar has the crown and always will.

BW is the best RTS but we don't need to constantly tell people that. This thread is supposed to be about FA, not fruitless arguments.

Anyways I just got SupCom and FA via the humble bundle sale. I'm pretty much new to the game though I did play original SupCom casually years ago when it first released. Back then I already had experience with games like BW, WC3, AOK so all the basics listed in the wiki's Beginner's Guide were pretty natural to grasp. Anyways I heard this game has an abundance of replays to go through? Any place I can go to find the "best" replays to try and learn proper builds and such?

you didnt read the thread at all then !!!! all my efforts :°°°°°° ( i put photos on page 4 )

you have to download the free Forged alliance Forever lobby http://www.faforever.com/ and create an account.

You'll join the lobby which will automatically link to your game and let matches start from windows .

There you have ALL the replays of old matches stored , LIVE replays , Tutorials , lots of mods , FAF balance/tweak games , a funny galactic war , coop mission to make with other friends , Endless map vault and many other things. Everything is done by lobby you just double click on things , very user friendly.

Lobby has its users peak on central europe evening time but has people 24/24

Actually I did read the thread I downloaded FAF yesterday and played some games with friends on it. I wanted to know how to find the *best* replays, not just replays in general. So far I'm just going to the replay tab and searching for "Zhenia261" because he's #1 on the leaderboard, but I'm curious if there are better ways.

EDIT: Apparently I was looking at the wrong leaderboard anyways -.-

Zhenia261 is first in the lowest league called "scouts". XPs league is the highest (just click on a different tab on the leaderboard). I suggest looking at games from Lu_Xun_17 or BC_Blackheart.

It looks like you are searching for #1 spot in the noob league, in the leaderboards tab go to top right corner and switch to either global or 1v1 rankings then search for the top players in the replays tab.
In the replay tab you can also search based on rating without specifying a name, you can also ask in the lobby for someone to direct you to a good recent replay, there are also forum threads with interesting replays.

In this thread there are some starcraft fans who can't believe that there is a game deeper than starcraft. This attitude is the source of the "resentment" that you might see in some posts on here comparing starcraft to supcom FA. It isn't that starcraft is not an epic game, it is that it has blinded so many people into believing that nothing can come close to it or surpass it. Supcom FA is much deeper, for many different definitions of depth, but SCBW and SC2 will always be far superior to Supcom FA in their strengths.

If you consider yourself an RTS fan, have a good computer, and want a game that you can study for years, then you owe it to yourself to try Supcom FA.
On the other hand:
If you want to play with dolls play Total War and choose the dolls you want.
If you want to play with your girlfriend play AOE 2.
If you have a dream of becoming a famous gamer then play SC2, LOL/DOTA 2.
If you love micro and consider the keyboard and mouse to be weapons suitable for physical competitions play SCBW.
(How simple is a sword, but how deep is the technique. In this regard SCBW is the deepest game ever)

Hi,

I'm the initiator of the FAF project, and I would like to say that none of these guys is talking of the behalf of the FAF team or FAF community.

They may seem arrogant and/or aggressive (and I don't like that), but they are most likely very passionate about the game.
We have a strict policy around on the chat and the forum, and be sure that being rude to new players and other games is not tolerated at all.

I don't know if FA is better, worst, or the same as broodwar, and it's really not important.

But one thing is sure, good RTSes are rare these days, and FA is surely one of them.

So why not give it a try, at worst, you've spend some few bucks and got some others great games with the humble bundle

Also, I think that co-operative campaign are quite unique in the RTS world (maybe they are some others but I don't know them), and if you think you are into speedrun, it's a good opportunity to try to score on our time leaderboard

Also, I don't know what is the state of broodwar lobbies these days, but if you like what you see in FAF (I think it has everything that someone has pledge for Battle.net 2 on another thread in these forums), the client code is open source.... (you don't need FA to try it by the way).

If I sound elitist to someone, you are correct I am from the elite. I never said anything bad about starcraft in the above post. I called it an epic game and that it is much better than supcom FA in some regards and that SCBW in someways the most complex game in history. I wanted to point to the reason why people have resentment against starcraft.
