Worked for me in practice, but I got bored before I finished the game, the mod makes everything take far too long for me.

Thin Men are the first major hurdle. They are very accurate, their gun is strong enough to oneshot most early soldiers, and they can poison for good measure, and are tough enough to survive at least one salvo from most weapons.

They are also defensive in nature, so it's hard to lure them out of their cover to draw a bead on them, let alone 2 beads that you need to probably put them down.

Mutons are the second hurdle, though Cyberdisks and Chrysalids are also very problematic early on. Research really does take far to long to get even the first tier of upgrades to keep up.
Luke, you are still a wanker!

A thousand times this. So so underrated. The two facts that incubation never had a sequel and Shenmue never went past the second game when it was supposed to be a series of like 16 games are the most depressing facts in video games.

I really think it's all about SHIVs. My first successful run in ironman classic was completely carried by the little metal friends, they are great against chryssalids (fantastic movement) and their suppression/ firepower is very useful to ferry you through the mid game until you get hench soldiers.

I did build one. It always gets damaged and misses few combats while being repaired. They are too expensive at start to build few.

Screw Classic Ironman, seriously. Long story below if you feel like reading.

I'm on my 17th try -- most of them ended on the mission where thin men appear for the second time (and in numbers), but I've finally learned the only way to consistently beat thin men is to level up my Heavy to Sergeant to get double rockets ASAP. Once I got past the hurdle of getting a Heavy Sergeant, I get two Heavy Sergeants, then I can breeze through to the third month with 8 satellites, no countries lost, carapace armor + laser rifle/lmg/sniper techs. I had a few casualties, but I basically had 9 guys around the captain level.

Then I downed an abductor class ship and faced 3 chrys and 6 mutons all at once at the entrance, which was almost right in sight of my squad's starting position. Thankfully the 3 chrys bunched up and I took 'em all out with 1 rocket and 1 nade. I took out another 2 mutons with another rocket/nade combo. I weaken the last 4 mutons (all 4 hp or less) with one last shredder rocket and nade.

Then the XCOM nightmare happens.

+ Show Spoiler [XCOM NIGHTMARE] +
My sniper misses two shots (both 75%), both my assaults miss two double-shots in a row at close distance (all 75%), my two heavies miss three shots (around 55-65%) and use up their last nade to kill one of them mutons off. Of course the mutons are hitting every single one of their shots with crits, quickly killing off my major heavy and two lieutenant assaults. Probability of missing six 75% shots and three 60% shots? 0.002%. One out of 64,000. Fuck. Me. And of course my squaddie heavy had to panic and kill off my captain support. WHY. Why do you miss every single shot, but can somehow make the long distance one on your teammate?!

Ok, pull back and reassess -- I pull my squaddie heavy out of alien sight, he's got 1hp, out of ammo, no nade, no rocket. My major sniper got full 11 hp, but she's also out of ammo. I reload on both, praying the mutons won't rush me. Success. At this point I suspect they've taken both sides of the entrance of the alien ship with high ground -- what do I do? I stay out of sight and overwatch 6 rounds in a row. I get lucky and two mutons wander into my sight -- of course my sq heavy misses both shots, but my sniper manages to land 'em. Then I send out my heavy as a spotter/bait, praying to god that the last two mutons aren't overwatching, cuz then I'm screwed. I'm so freaking lucky, I spot one lurking on the right side (not high ground!) and take him out.

The last muton's sticking to his guns on the left side high ground, and it's a long corridor -- no flanks, only 1 half-cover spot in the middle, I had no choice but to rush him. He's in half-cover at the end, I get up into the half-cover spot. Squaddie misses his 45% of course, Major Sniper pulls out her laser pistol and shoots at the 4hp muton, 75% ... it hits, it's a critical, for THREE HP. 1hp Muton immediately counterattacks on my half-covered squaddie and MISSES. I run both my guys up to him at point-blank range and finish him with a 100% pistol shot. I breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Alien activity. Mission is not over. F me. I creep around every corner and door like I'm in some terrible horror movie gone wrong, praying that I won't run into another alien squad and that only the last boss remains. I finally edge into the final room with some relief knowing that only one bad guy remains -- most likely an overseer. The last room's entrance has high ground overlooking into most of the room's low ground equipment, but the room is so big that my guys can only see half of the room from the entrance high ground's cover. My sq heavy steps onto the ramp and immediately sees it -- an Outsider. Only 5HP, I can do this.

I step back out of sight and setup overwatches on the high ground entrance, but the Outsider just won't bite. A few tense turns of me shifting my guys around, I finally spot him up close on the low ground -- heavy misses his shot (of course), sniper takes out her laser pistol and ... hits. For 1 damage. What. I didn't even know that was possible with a laser pistol. Outsider counters and puts my heavy out of his misery. I pull back my sniper a little bit and overwatch again. Somehow the Outsider gets into a position between a door with full cover without triggering my overwatch and gets first attack. MISSES. Thank God my sniper has Low Profile. I say fuck it, there's no way I can flank him, and even if I did I wouldn't be able to kill him from 4hp with a laser pistol, so I return fire. 56% shot. HITS. For THREE. He returns fire immediately.

OUTSIDER HITS ME. CRITICAL. 9 damage, my sniper now has 2hp, Outsider has 1hp. Holy. Crap. What do I do. Do I stay in cover and take another 56% shot? Or do I risk running up as close as I can to try to increase my hit chance but with zero cover? I stare at my monitor for at least 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do. 56% with cover, or a better chance without? But how much better of a chance? Maybe it wont' help at all, the Outsider's in FULL COVER. I think long and hard about it. Ok. Screw it. I figure the Outsider's going to hit me whether I'm in cover or not, so I may as well take my best shot right here, right now. I run her as close as I can, and take aim. 74% chance, YES. I CAN DO THIS. I take the shot. IT FREAKING HITS. MISSION OVER.

Screw Classic Ironman. Seriously.

lol, are you stocking up on SHIVS? They are so important. Also, don't worry if you lose an entire squad. As long as you have decent SHIVS you can usually make it through an entire squad being nuked by troll luck (happens in every run to me). A unit of 5 SHIVS and 1 guy can usually take out any opponents. You just have to abuse their hilarious advantage in movement and pinning opponents.

Ironman is suppossed to be unforgiving. If its any comfort it took me around 200 tries to beat the game......on impossible though. Didnt take that long on classic. Once you learn the maps and alien spawn locations the game becomes much easier.

I don't even have the foundry building available yet, haha. I haven't started any of the main plot research, I've just been concentrating on getting laser tech + carapace armor. I'll definitely check it out though.

DaCruise, what's your go-to strategy for I/I? I've seen several different squads suggested, it seems like I can find a recommended strat for favoring any of the 4 classes. I personally like heavies and snipers because it seems like the only sure way to kill an alien is with rockets and nades, and snipers have very high aim with damn good ground + SCOPE + natural aim.

From my experience the best starting bonus is also the one that makes foundry upgrades cheap :D

I know you didn't ask but my favourite set up is:

2 heavy
2 assault
2 shiv.

It fucks people up and I find snipers to be more situation based and less reliable. Although when you get the sniper ability that lets you kill and get another action, 2 snipers instead of heavies can wreck people.

Finally beat Classic Ironman. Took 22 tries. What a game.

I took some advice from here and started using SHIVs -- they're quite good, especially upgraded, and are probably Lt-Cpt level Heavies in terms of aim and damage. For some reason, they seem to be hard to hit even though they're just sitting out in the open, and they usually don't get critical'd.

But after awhile, I found using human soldiers to be more versatile overall. Ghost armor's cloaking ability alone more than makes up for any strengths of the SHIVs -- couple that with the double attacks and explosives all the other classes can use, and I much preferred to go without SHIVs. Plus not being able to navigate elevated terrain until you research Hover SHIV is a pain.

Beat the final level with only a Col. heavy, a Sgt. sniper, 2 Corp assaults, a Cpt. support, and a Corp heavy. Made it into the final room with all 6 squad members alive -- came out with only 2. My assaults really saved the day with cloaking, run & gunning, and grappling to get point blank range with alloy cannon blasts.

Not even going to attempt Impossible haha. Great game, put in 74 hours.

Its always the same with 2K Games. They just hate Europe and release it 3days later here. So we are forced to pirate it.

On my classic Ironman Run the last fight was a real dissapointment. I ran in with a cloaked Support (because they have the best movement). An then my two squadsight Snipers killed the Dude in the middle before anything happenend...and the game was over....

I will play Enemy Within without Snipers, or at least without Squadsight. Its just to good.

agreed, snipers to powerful in a late game situation where killing the last boss before killing anyone else wins the game.

They are also powerfull in any other situation of the game. Fly them up, set them on overwatch and see the first two aliens that show their head get popped. Or you don't go on overwatch and just kill 4 a turn.^^
