Well I beat the game in 12 hours over the course of 3 days, was fun, normal difficulty is a bit too easy. Started on Classic and had 2 members of my team picked off by Sectoids from long range into full cover in one (critical) hit, when I can't even get 40% odds unless I'm in melee range.

Yeeep...this'll be fun.

Trust me, when you get to mid/late game and the game is so easy it is boring you will appreciate how you actually needed some effort in early game and how it was challenging and interesting.

And let me beat your next comment. You will say: "But there is nothing challenging about getting one shot from afar while in full cover. I could do nothing better."
My answer would be: "We heard this same comment from everyone that just started classic, and I also said it to myself when I started Classic. It is challenging and you can do better then just stand in full cover and think you are immune to everything now. There are other tactics and ways to approach the game in classic and the challenge is in finding those and not giving up.
I can now after playing enough games of Classic Ironman go through 1st month and lose 0-1 guys".

Direct IP for now. But they plan to upgrade it after release with MP between all different devices (PC, MAC, Ipad, android) through some MP service.

What I don't know is if they worked on some MP problems like only one person being able to talk to NPCs and use same shops while others don't even know what is happening. Also some of who pauses and such might be a problem.

Allright, all seems well now. I have lost no countries this month, it's up at 5. I got an A grade from the latest council report. In 3 days I'm getting a new satellite uplink, and two more satellites will be ready to launch. That will leave me with only one country without satellite coverage and with a threatening enough panic level. If I'm right, launching a satellite reduces the panic level, which means soon enough I'll be able to control all countries' panic level.

I'm also getting two brand new Firestorms equipped with Laser Cannons very soon (3-4 days), so I'll make sure to send one of them to said country, and other to probably Asia, where I have three of my satellites. I have stealth satellites, so I have only lost one since the beginning of the game (which actually caused me to lose two countries) I am thinking to get another Firestorm as soon as possible, and probably refit the three basic Raven interceptors that I have with Heavy Cannons.

In terms of squad depth, I'm also at clear waters. I have 2 extremely good snipers, and two up and coming snipers that can get some work done. I have four assaults, with three of them extremely good in terms of promotions, and the other one capable to hold her ground. I have 3 supports, two of them field medics, which I equipped with medikits for the current mission (an UFO shot down over Africa) I was pretty happy to see how quickly it's possible to get back a good squad if you have good equipment, so losing 2-3 soldiers in my case, wasn't a disaster.

Currently, I am going to the UFO recovery mission with two snipers (both my best, I think Snipers are really important and I want to make sure to get good ranged coverage every mission), two supports (with medikits to heal up the squad, will be useful in tight situations since I never really had one or if any medikit carrier so far) and two assaults, both really nicely promoted, with one coming from a reward from my latest alien abduction mission, she needs only one ability to get the tree completed. The other I levelled from scratch. All of them are equipped with Laser weapons and Carapace Armor with Nano Suits (I think Chitins are better but I can't afford it right now, maybe next month) except the supports, which have medikits.

I'm really pumped up, early game was frustrating but as you play it gets better. This is a Classic, no Ironman run (saving it for next play) so I have the luxury to reload when I make stupid mistakes but I noticed that if I'm going to lose a squad member that mission, it happens no matter how many times I reload so it doesn't affect anything besides making me less nervous. I don't use at all unless I make really obvious and stupid mistakes and lose people (missclicks, not paying attention etc.) but it makes me feel less stressed.

That's 2 classic ironman games ruined by double reaction shot misses on a floater pack, then missing the 85% point blank shot when one tried to flank.

Snipers are so goddamned useless at the beginning of the game, never get above 65% to hit which seems closer to 0%. I'd rather have a rookie.

At least this time I had the displeasure of doing a terror mission. After taking out what I thought was all the crystalids, one dropped from the floor above and ate my Captain support, then the last floater flanked and killed my sniper outta bloody nowhere. Rookie cleaned it up.

Causes of my losses ranked by number:

1) RNG
2) Thin Men.
3) Floaters

Oh and only 1 hit from an enemy that entire run was a non-crit (excluding melee).

I find Floaters the easiest to deal with, because they tend to be really aggressive. Just hang back and let them come to you, and don't be shy to use grenades.

Unfortunately you are right. I kept reloading a few times because I was missing 2 80-85% hits on mutons with my best soldiers, then hit 2 times with 15 and 40% rookies.

Floaters have 4 and grenades do 3. I camp on overwatch, but they land behind me, trigger the shot (misses) make it difficult for me to find good cover, so I take a flanking shot from point blank, misses, they crit me, kill whoever it was, rinse, repeat.

Oh my god this game can be so stressful sometimes!

+ Show Spoiler +

I am doing the mission where you shot down the UFO right after the hyperwave system is completed. Heavy armored muttons and Sectopods were really tough to deal with, since I only had two plasma rifles yet and most of my class on laser weapons. Snipers do good damage though, but I lost one of my assaults, a very well ranked one too.

I am now proceeding inside the UFO, and I'm hearing some terrible growls coming from inside the big room in the middle of the complex I'm in now. I split my squad into two, with a sniper and and support on one side, and sniper assault support on the other.

Where I left the game, I saw the door to that big room in the center, and right opposite it there were some places to take cover, I'm assuming there's something hugely powerful inside and I gotta be really careful taking it out...Gonna be tough since my two remaining supports are out of medkits and are both very injured.

I hope it all turns out well. Don't give any spoilers as to what it is I wanna see it myself.

I guess that's not totally accurate, the shots I'm referring to are one where you and he are on two sides of the same corner of cover, which IS point blank although the game doesn't recognize it as flanking. I miss a ton of those 85-90% shots.

I've also literally run to within 2 squares of them when they're not in cover (and neither am I at this point) and also missed several of those shots. (roughly 80% accuracy most of the time).

I do have a really good run going on right now. Rushing beam weapons and have managed to keep everyone alive since the first mission (where I lost 2 due to bullshit) and actually beat the first 2 council missions. Almost time for the first terror mission and I have 3 snipers...this is gonna suck.

No no, it is exactly over 100%. Assault rifles get +4% chance to hit per tile from 10 tiles and closer. So it's you are point blank, you get +40%. Rookies got 65% (their aim), so if you are flanking (like you stated), it's 105%. It's how the game works. By the way, shotguns get the best accuracy per tile at short range

About that terror mission... save one civilian and turtle near the extraction point. If needed, get the hell out there man

Sometimes people get confused about flanking works. I only had problems with it on some spots at some maps where it clearly doesn't work well, and thinman jumping jack flash on council mission sometimes getting "into cover" for no apparent reason (and with 6 HP, they are a PITA to kill if they are on free cover ).

Yeah, but despite the fact you are at point blank range, corner shots still count as low cover which is -30%. For all intents and purposes, my gun is 3 inches from their face but I'm still at 85%. Flanking from 2-3 tiles away gives you 90+% but I still missed 3 shots like that in my last Classic run that resulted in the deaths of 3 very important squad members.

I don't think I'd survive all the damn cryssalids if I tried to turtle like that. I mean I barely stopped 3 of them from catching my team and one of the extras actually DID catch one of my guys late in the map even though he got 2 shots at it. Need full laser weaponry before that mission.

They don't man. A flanked enemy is flanked because from where you are he hasn't cover. Corner shots the alien doesn't have cover (except some kind of weird locations that seems bugged, but you won't see the alien flanked).

About the terror mission. The problem is you can't move with 3 snipers. I would just bring rookies to be honest. Do you have the OST ? You don't really need lasers ( but to be honest, you should have lasers by day 1 of second month always, since scope takes 8 days, and laser beam 24, if you take scientists on second abduction you normally get the laser beams on day1, depending on when you started to research it). It can be quite hard but it's your only chance. Remember to reload a lot (i mean the guns ;p). If you can't beat it, just get some kills, and then get the fuck out. Atleast you will get XP.

And yes, it can be hard, specially the restaurant map on the top of a building, but it's always doable. I did it with 1 rookie, 2 assaults (1 with rapid fire) and 1 support on I/I, and yeah there were moments i thought i was going to get overrun, but that was impossible difficult and marathon mode (no beams, no OST). So i am pretty sure classic is way more possible.

I don't get why people fear Chrysalids so much, they are very easy to kill as long as you've got people in position and know how to retreat. Sectopods on the other hand, are my nightmare, their overwatch is ridiculously OP, they take two shots per turn, their main attack hits like a truck, their hp is huge and they also have an aoe attack.

I'll take Chrysalids over Sectopods everyday.

Yep. But first terror mission can go nuts sometimes, specially on impossible and classic, where the chryssalids can pop zombies even if you haven't spotted them yet. On impossible you can get swarmed by 4-5 or even more chryssalids if you aren't fast at spotting and killing them (this is bigger on impossible, since almost every single pack roam). After you got precission lasers, etc, yeah, they are quite easy.

by the time sectopods show up, you have squadsight snipers and heavys with heat-ammo. i never really had a problem with them (classic ironman) chrysalids are a pain in the first one or two missions you have to deal with them (in only had 4 guys, and if some miss, you lack firepower to kill them before the get some of your guys) with a developed squad they are no problem
