The real key is to never ever reveal any new vision unless half (or more ideally) of your squad has their turn up. That way in case you reveal a Muton pack or Chrysallids or whatever, you have time to kill them off before you get owned.

This. The alien spawn mechanic is obvious and easily abused. Aliens should spawn at the beginning of the game, throughout the map, and if you don't move quickly enough, they will flank and converge on your squad on a timer. Say....10 turns to start moving, 20 turns to full flank, commence attack in 25 turns. It would be a decent simulation of how a defensive force responds to a new threat.
You must construct additional pylons.

I had my first massacre tonight. 4/6 of my squad died (and they were really highly-ranked too! ). It sucked. Basically I spend my 1st turn moving all of my guys forward, and then 4 different groups of mutons all spawn with half of them totally flanking me and I have nowhere to go. And then I missed multiple 60%+ shots Plus of course my medic is the first person to die.

I'm so terrified of doing the alien base assault now lol.

Hey everyone, I'm having a blast with this game.

Is there a drawback if I wait a extended amount of time to capture an alien ?
I got the order like 2 months and did nothing towards it, I take my time to build everything up (soldiers/satellites and researchs)

No drawback, but nothing to gain from it either. Catch a sectoid the first month, or in 10 months... the progression of aliens, your tech, national support etc progresses the same way. The only difference is that you don't have to build and equip arc throwers etc.

So what exactly triggers aliens progress? For me it felt like it happened in an instant with no warning when I suddenly fought Mutons and Cyberdisks for the first time and in the same mission no less.

Anyway I got a game over on my Normal+Iron Man yesterday 260 days in, was pretty frustrating as I was just catching up again and had some good missions, really need a better air coverage for next time. So I decide to restart on Classic+Iron Man, after couple failures I learn on first mission that dashing on Classic is a bad idea but having a lot of fun now.

Do you get less chance to hit on Classic or did I just forget how bad the soldiers were at start? I'm getting 25% and 45% a lot in decent firing positions while I seem to be getting sniped through the map.

Honestly I swear that classic lies to you with the percentages. I've had multiple bullshit missions where I miss 6 68% shots in a row causing the loss of two highly ranked snipers/other personnel.

But no, your soldiers just suck. As far as I can tell in classic enemies hit more often, do more damage, and depending on their type have more health. Its not too bad once you have some people promoted, but the first 2-3 missions can be rough. Just make sure to use plenty of grenades given that they don't miss and provide easy XP.

The stats of every soldier is the same on all difficulties. Difficulty does not affect stat-ups from promotions either. The only real difference is that they start with 1 less hitpoint.

Almost done on classic ironman. I never played normal, so I couldn't compare.
Took me like 5 games before I get a good starting setup going. Definately fun, more games should be like this. Can't wait to try impossible ironman. (although I do not understand how it can be more difficult, cuz everytime an enemy shoots in classic they will pretty much hit and crit anyway...

So yesterday I started my 3rd ironman classic run but this time without using snipers at all. This time a great run, lost only 1 soldier in first mission, lost 0 in abduction one, shot down an ufo, lost zero men in ufo crash mission. Skipped bomb disarm mission in first month that always I fail or lose to many soldiers. I even figured out you can build more then one satellite at the same time.
Almost had carrapace armor, no lost countries, officer academy building in second month.

And then, another abduction mission before carapace and 5 man squad. Because of injury my assault was out of mission. So I go in with 2 heavy and 1support and one rookie. I get a map where starting cover is one of those alien thingies and half cover car. It is the map with house in the middle, the one with many floors and no roof. Round 2 and 2 sectoids appear. Nornally not a problem but there is no full cover between me and them. So I move my heavy to the house to get better cover. It was too far so I needed to dash. 3 thin men appear. Now I got enemies from two sides. So no real cover, rockets blocked by windows while they can shoot freely, and 3 round later a complete wipe
GAME OVER.
I will try 4th play today.

i really fail to understand why everyone likes this game so much. its so incredibly repetitive ...
it would be a shame not to finish this game after like 30 missions, but other than another crappy render video at the end there doesnt seem to be anything to look forward to. maybe i just gonna skip all standard missions.

A big factor is nostalgia, at least for me. A lot of people who got this game played the old ones and loved them. They were just as repetitive after a while as well though.

Another factor is just a love for the genre itself. I love turn based strategy games of all kinds (XCOM series, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, Civilization, Ascendancy and the likes).

For the new XCOM game, I like the setting and the atmosphere and actually like the art style.

I fail to understand why some people like some things as well, but to each his own
I has a flavor

Well that's the case for any game that has any gameplay to speak of. You either find it fun and so you enjoy it, or you find it boring and it seems repetitive.

Name a single known decently good game and I will tell you why it's repetitive.

All games are repetitive, there's no way around it. The whole idea of a game builds on it, and it's true for boardgames etc as well. Pretty much any game can be brought down to "You only do X over and over", it doesn't say anything about how good or bad the game is.

Because round based strategie is basically dead, so this is almost "fresh" again .

Just read the review in the OP. Summarizes my feelings pretty well. It's a good game but it doesn't hold up to the real XCom which makes me a bit sad. I was hoping for more but I guess that's all I'll get for the moment.

I think they especially messed up the core combat mechanic by removing the entire action/movement point system. I don't mind so much that they simplified the classes and the inventory, that I can live with but moving around the map is really awkward because it feels like as if you leap around the map and cross your fingers that the opponents don't spawn at the wrong places.

You also loose a lot of time just sitting, reloading and doing minor movement shuffles to make sure that everybody is in the right place before you can move forward. It was the same in the classic game but it didn't feel so awkward to me because you could just do incremental movements and shuffle people better.

I also hate the fact that aliens get a free move as soon as you discover them, because you end up withdrawing, waiting and shuffling again. It also totally breaks the maps for me because I'm usually not thinking about the map, but more about individual packs. Somebody wrote earlier, that it feels like an MMO and I totally agree. You go forward, pull a pack and then stack damage and hope to drop them before they close in (drop your tank). And then you move to the next pack.

And I like the idea of having all these fancy action sequences but they are poorly done in my opinion. Plenty of bad camera angles and awkward things, like when you throw a grenade through a door, you sometimes end up throwing the grenade through the wall.

I could go on... but I don't want this to sound too negative.

Gosh, I just bottled it so hard.... Just lost my complete allstar team, a fighter and had to dodge 3 missions due to insufficient soldiers. Lost then two satallites and 2 council members. Just because of ONE fucked up mission against like 15 mutons which all hit critically.....

Damn, it was going so well for me on impossible ironman but then I lost my entire squad on 1 mission and everything went to shit. I did survive for 92 days though, hehe.

Too much rage reload save after 2 days of playing it. Im now just throwing down the sniper scout balls after the first turn cos its too ridiculous when 9 aliens appear at once and close up on me.

The pack of 3 commander sectoids is the worst because of their insta 2 mindcontrol, fuck over my entire position and cant push them cos it will spawn 2mutons and a beserker.

There was as many classes in original that you cared to invent

and yea, fly up on snipers turn one and deploy scanners, then start moving rest of the squad. Or wait for turn 2 as well to overwatch the snipers before moving at all.

It's not like this shit didn't happen in original, first man out of the landing craft gets reaction shot in the back? You threw smoke grenade turn 1 and nothing else.
