I recently started playing Long War with commander's choice. Is there any guide on what kind of soldiers should be what class?

It's kind of subjective, but here's what I would suggest:
High mob, bad aim - Engineer or Medic (shotgun assault also an option)
High aim, low mob - Sniper
High aim, average/good mobility - Infantry, Gunner,

Scouts/assaults care mostly about mobility. Rocketeers would depend on how you plan on building them, mob is more important for OW than rocket spammers since you give up a lot of talent investment if they have to dash to keep up with the rest of the team.

Also, we officially lost in EW. MECs, gene mods, advanced tech... none of it officially happened. I'm slightly disappointed they went that route with the story, but ultimately the story is a minor part of these games.

Rarely a game manages to make sense in sequels. Look at witcher. In witcher 2 and witcher 3 they ignore all the leveling and skill aquired during previous games.

How else would you do it? Start of with a full high tech X-com fresh off defeating the last alien to come visit? Would make for a short game as we fusion bomb them out the sky as they arrive.

Now I'm curious how the volunteer fits into any of this. If we lost the volunteer can't exist right?

XCOM won that battle, but they could still easily lose a war and be shut down. The aliens could show up with overwhelming force (XCOM can't really handle 15 battleships showing up at once), or make a peace deal which includes XCOM basically being gutted and then following corruption/political subterfuge taking the aliens from offering tech as war reparations to them becoming more and more in control. Without access to the old stores/database XCOM would basically be restarting on tech. It would be a harder narrative to write, but doable.

Yeah, if we never got the advanced tech then the volunteer never happened. Which makes Solomon's comments about the volunteer living a bit weird. Maybe the whole "we lost round one" thing was decided after that interview and he was speaking of plans that existed then? I'm sure he'll get asked about it in an interview before launch.

Maybe EXALT 2.0 was formed and really started tearing up everything from inside

I say the user who said the primary physic user from the winning game becomes the new human overlord. that would be a GREAT story, i'm not even being sarcastic, it would be pretty awesome if the aliens were ahead of the player the entire time.

he isn't right sadly, they made any success past the first couple months of the war non-canon. pretty disappointing, I really don't think it would have been difficult to reset xcom's tech levels to zero (break their gollop chamber, raid their stores of alloys and elerium while a larger alien force beefs up security for the occupation of earth) but I guess it's just easier to toss out what little plot there was in favor of a new setting.

the main firaxis guy on XCOM's also on record as saying that the volunteer didn't die at the end of EW, but...if getting to the volunteer isn't canon, I have no idea why that would matter one way or the other.

I still have some hope of some stupid time travel circumstance that allows the volunteer to be in the game as the alien king.

Why even reset. Why not place this game at a later year, or the same year, under different circumstances. Now you're XCOM if aliens integrated into society and you need to get rid of them. Otherwise you get strange things like Terror from the Deep.

If only they manage to capture the faction themathic from XCOM apocalypse... that was great. Gathering allies against the aliens so you weren't the only one shooting at them, or how other factions fighted each other was priceless.

Ugh, that xcom2 trailer and basic story premise looks very underwhelming. Still going to buy the game since I'm a sucker for XCOM games ever since the original UFO defense, but damn, even those low budget XCOM aftermatch/shock/light series had a better setting / story than what's proposed here I think :d

I don't see whats so underwhelming about a game that had little to absolutely no story whatsoever to begin with. Aliens come to earth. We respond with Xcom to fight them. Don't know what the hell they even want until the very last mission with no progress in the story throughout the game. Anyways, though, in my opinion Xcom 2 looks like it has more story to it then EU/EW lol

Its all about the gameplay anyway and my first time playing EU/EW, I didn't really bother to follow the story because there was none. I enjoyed the Xcom 2 trailer because it basically showed that we're gonna be doing something different and not be on the defending side for once and causing some havoc, with guerilla tactics, for the aliens who dared to takeover our planet. Also the fact that we're gonna be on the move with our base with limited supplies and looking for people to take up the fight and join the cause.
