What EVE does is quite different, as the interactions between the players are not as "actiony", and rendering space and most objects in space is relatively cheap, and there isn't a lot of animation going on at any point in time.
Rendering full natural environment, hundreds of fluid moving, organic character models interacting in an action-based combat, and putting them all in the same "realm" in what's very likely to be a much more popular game (famous IP, good marketing, looks good etc)?
I'm skeptical, but prepared to be amazed.
It doesn't seem hard to me to do something similar with the "megaserver" compared to what EvE does. While technically everyone is in the same world (and can e.g. chat with each other) the "areas" can be similar to the systems in EvE online.
The way EvE works (in a nutshell) is that they are able to focus more processing power to areas where there are lots of players, with something similar I can see things with up to 200-300 people at once work. Big difference though is that this type of combat seems much harder to pull off in that environment.
FML, I might actually want to give this a try even though I'm not happy about what happened to my TES series since Oblivion. =/
So pretty much every other mmo game so far has failed, or come in far under expectations, while at the same time screwing over the franchies big time. Even WoW has screwed it self over, but atleas it's making money.. I'm just curious why anyone think this will be any different, this is 95% like any other mmo annoucemen, there's hype, and "this will be the one" and what else, I've seen it so many god fucking times I'm sick of it.
I'll have not hope for this, and the lowest expecations. If it turns out to be average, then great, otherwise, told you so.
Yes, it's an asshole way of going about it, but if you've followed the mmo-genere so far, there's about 3 out of all 'em that's doing well after a year from release, if even that long. I'm just sick of good franchines being put the to mmo template, to cash out...
Sounds like a nice game to explore and doesn't look like every generic MMO. Thought first the PvP could match up with WoE. Till they started to talk how you can customize your classes and saw a horde of players run though a crack in the wall and not half of them evaporated through some sort of defense set up. Yeah fighting 1 on 1 is nice, but espeically GvG needs AoEs and AoE defense to have any strategically depth. Will be funny to see level 50 players die to level 10 players though. Effect wise it looks like as if the servers could handle many people on one screen fighting, but well single target and tiny AoEs won't lag the servers as much as an AoE that hit 100 people multiple times each hit having a chance on a status effect.

If they have the tech to render 100 chars on screen I dont see the problem with it
I dont see the problem with the megaserver. It's similar to what TSW is doing (and other games), as in you have 1 server for everyone, but you're moved to dimension/shards decided by a simple/complex algorithm. It's just the sharding of a server (like we had in EQ2 and earlier days), where you have 3+ instances of a zone on each server and players are distributed on them. With the difference we now only have 1 "main"-server and 100+ instances.
With crossserver / crossrealm tech used in other games (WoW, SWTOR, ...) it's basically the same. But with the advantage that they designed their server tech from the get go to function with those features, thus making it more efficient / scalable (like heavy load launch days and the following months of player reduction (due to playing less /leaving)).

Also saying that the game doesn't "open up" till lvl 50 makes me think that I'm gonna have to grind levels doing random kill and fetch quests like every other MMO in existence, so no fucking thank you.
When they were talking about "the game will know where to put you" I'm guessing that it will function a lot like the overflow servers in Guild Wars 2. No queues, but you won't necessarily be able to interact with everyone on the server at the same time. I'm pretty sure Guild Wars 2 is actually using the exact same technology, just with walls (i.e. "servers") around different groups of players in order to facilitate WvW.

While you're correct to a degree, I'm not sure comparing the WoW-style of MMO to something like an MMO Elder Scrolls is exactly the same. Many MMOs fail because they either try to take on WoW, lose, but retain their niche of players; or just have poor production. Has there been an MMO that wasn't fantasy, WoW-esque design that was also extremely high budget?

Look at darkfall. It is a much closer analogy than eve. It was one big map, with no loading screens.
However it did have 'server lines', the entire map was broken up into chunks. Where two chunks meet there is a 'server line', when crossing over you would be transferred to another server or section of a server that handled that area.
The load was not noticeable due to a lot of rendering client side, as well as the ability to fetch player / npc data from across lines (meaning no sudden players popping on screen). However there would be some lag involved, due to the client catching up to the server once it has finished swapping servers.
I'm sure there's a lot better information out there than my own experience, if you are interested.
edit: This supported hundreds of players in the same zone, without to much trouble. Heres a video from super early after release:
keep in mind that darkfall is a sandbox pvp anywhere, friendly fire, full loot(you die you drop everything you had on you) MMO.
Any new information out? I'm quite excited, I hope they narrow down a release date so I can plan what I'm purchasing as far as the time of year this comes out.
Never seen a discussion page about Elder Scrolls Online to have this many negative posts and I personally think it will simply be amazing to have PvP with 200 people in your screen! No idea how they are planning to do it but I will stay positive till I see the Online version.
I noticed nobody is really keeping up with this thread, so I'll try to post updates in here when possible. Most of them I will be pulling from my guild/community site (the http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=148872one we formed in teamliquid years ago) but will try and link directly where possible.
Anyone heard/seen the video of the 20min leaked footage of beta? Been alot of talk lately about how similar ESO was to WoW or any generic MMO regarding the talent tree and the quest etc etc. Unfortunately I am unable to confirm this because all the video been removed or atleast MOST of the video been removed. Does anyone here know of a link to the video that hasnt been removed showing game play?

Hm I googled yesterday and eventually found a video. But I didn't watch it all didn't seem bad to me though.

Guess I am a day late. I am unable to find this video at all. Dailymotion, Vimeo and etc etc all seems to be removed. I guess ill just keep my eye out lol
EDIT: Actually found it on reddit and I must say, it not that bad. I dont understand all the hate it getting lol. People are saying that it a wow clone but I never once see it as a wow clone while watching the video. He had to aim his attack and there was NO specific area that can be considered a "questioning hub." He just kind of wondered around and found quest from dead body, from 2 guy quarreling over something in a house etc etc. I dont understand why people say this is a WoW clone. Only thing I cant defend this game is the talent tree but talent tree been used in all sort of game too dating back to diablo. So I personally dont have too much of a problem with it. Also, since this is an MMO, some freedom are lost. I think the video maker wanted to show that you cant sleep or attack any NPC you want.
Friend of mine watched the video yesterday, said he wasn't very impressed..but didn't really elaborate as to what turned him off though other than "it looked similar to wow", which honestly doesn't mean much as most if not all mmos that come out receive this criticism from someone.
Personally I'm still skeptical of the game other then your traditional MMO set in the elder scrolls universe, I'm not expecting much more than that, and if it's better, then great.

From watching the video, I must disagree with your friend. I wont deny that it kinda looks like WoW since ESO is an MMO and WoW is also an MMO. To say that strawberry cake doesnt taste like strawberry is kind of stupid. Some of the thing that I notice from the video is that sneaking/hidden aspect is in the game and the right hand and left hand mechanic seem to also be in the game. Blocking and stamina bar is also a rather unique aspect of the game. Also in the video, there was no designated questing area as far as I know and see. In fact, it seems like a quest seem to point you in a direction and upon doing that quest you will stumple upon some more quest. EX: A dead guy with a letter sticking out of him or something. That alone is enough to distinguish it from WoW. I have yet to play it myself but I must say it doesnt look too bad. I guess people expect to have the freedom of killing NPC and vendors and etc etc.
Also take into consideration that he was lvl 1 the entire 20min and only had 1 ability. If I was playing wow at lvl 1 rogue and going around for 20min spamming sinester strike, even WoW would look boring lol. I think people are missing the main point of the video.

those 2 bolded + the 200 people pvp thing someone mentioned, Guild Wars 2 anyone? I think we know who well the 200 pvp part worked there >_> While GW2 is a fine game, they didn't ship with even a 10th of the promised pvp features and what could be expected from a title that should have pretty much been about the bloody pvp.
Alas, the pve is what gets patches, added content etc and pvp guys can't even make a custom game yet so team A could practice vs team B.
e: okay watched that video clip, totally unimpressed.
