Calling the Witcher Series and the TES series "shitty" is a great way to ruin your credibility and argument. To each his own, but in no way shape or form are any of those games shitty. Even out of the gate, Skyrim gave me much much more entertainment than this game on PC, and with mods it's not even close.
Unless you got a gamepad, a tool for consoles, this game is complete shit on the PC. Ever tried playing it with a mouse? It's as painful as walking on acid. The keyboard controls are all over the place and make absolutely no sense at all. And then, if that wasn't enough the framerate was capped at 30 and the resolution at 720p in 2012, both things fixed in a matter of hours by a talented individual, while the developers claimed it to be impossible due to engine limitations.
On consoles tihs game may well be one of the greatest RPGs ever, but on PC without modifying it (you were laughing about Skyrim and how it needs mods) and buying a gamepad it's not worth 5 bucks, while it costs 40.

Only real gripe I have about the game is that I feel absolutely lost in the world. It's probably intended, but it's kinda hard at times to find stuff without having anything like a quest log... + Show Spoiler +I was lucky enough I accidentaly stumbled upon the stairs in the church and got up to the Gargoyles since I thought my duty was pretty much done as I heard some kind of bell as I entered the church and cleared it out... Just went back there to get some easy souls, as I actually already was making my way down to the forest.

You're simply wrong with that, making your following argument invalid. The game is not "shit on PC". It's "shit on PC when played with mouse and keyboard" and "amazing when played with a gamepad". Of course that's subjective, but it objectively isn't "shit" by any stretch of the imagination.
Also, investing a bit of money in a gamepad isn't a huge deal. After all, you spent hundreds of dollars on your PC already, and you will probably again when you need upgrades sooner or later.

Yes, but it's simply a console studio that had literally no experience with programming for the PC. Something as trivial as this might easily go by their entire dev team if they simply don't have anyone who knows about it. Remember: The game wasn't supposed to come to the PC at all. It was only ported because a lot of people asked for it via a huge petition. I think we have to give them some leeway here.
With their next game, which will inevitably be ported to PC if this game sells enough copies, we can be a bit more scrutinizing.

Even with all the limitations I would prefer to play this on PC than any of the TES games. Skyrim and Oblivion are awful games in their base incarnations. I don't find wandering around in huge open worlds very interesting unless what I'm doing there is fun. Dark Souls' combat is fun. Everything about the combat in the TES games is summed up as "walk backward/forward while X" where you can replace X with either hitting it with a sword or casting spells at it, etc. Dark Souls on the other hand has a combat system where there is actual tactics about when to block or attack or run away.
Not to mention Dark Souls has an entire PvP scene that TES and Witcher games don't even have anything resembling. IMO the PvP system in Dark Souls is one of the best parts. I love being able to invade and attack players. Its a great feeling when you get that epic fight to find out your host had thousands and thousands of souls. TES and Witcher are fine single player games, but its the PvP element that keeps bringing me back to Dark Souls.

I checked some pages and the OP but I didnt read anything about this.
I know we fixed the resolution problem.
Did we get a framerate fix?

There is a framerate limit of 30. It's supposedly in the engine and can't be fixed with a patch. But apparently, you shouldn't get any framerate drops as you would on the Ps3, if you have the necessary hardware.

I watched a friend get framerate drops. He has E8400 and GTX285 so he definitely has the hardware considering the game is low resolution.

Fixing the framerate is probably impossible without a LOT more work.
Most of the animations (probably all, but I won't say that for certain) are tied in with the framerate. So if you do unlock it, all the animations will speed up, most likely making the game totally unplayable. Unfortunate, but a common technique in console development.

Yeah, I felt like that in the beginning, too. But you have to embrace it. I think there are a lot of places in the world which are completely optional to the main storyline, and I already found one pretty big place. If you embrace it and go around like you feel, the worst thing that can happen is literally you dying and maybe having to spent 10 minutes getting back the the place you were originally if you switched bonfires.

The console versions of this have extreme framerate issues in quite a few places. It's simply because consoles are dated as shit and honestly really bad hardware.
To the other people saying they feel lost. That's the point of the game. You feel alone. You really have no direction. No one is helping you (the people in firelink shrine kinda just laugh at you even attempting). You're allowed to go where ever you would like. Completely open world. It adds to the feeling of it's just you being dropped off in this world and now you have to figure out how to get out.

Taurus demon wouldn't be annoying at all if it didn't force you to run through half a castles worth of cannonfodder again for failing one dodge.

It is indeed true that some games just work better on a gamepad, and it's also why the PC is superior to consoles: There is no type of controller that doesn't work on a PC. The real issue here is that (from what I've heard) the game is nearly unplayable with the machine's native controller, and makes no effort to inform that separately sold peripherals are required to get the optimal playing experience.
|
To the people saying you need a Gamepad, it does make it easier but it is not required. I've beaten the game on NG+ already using just a keyboard, I recently switched to controller though because I couldn't aim my bow using a keyboard.
|
So as most of you guys have heard you need a Controller to play this port, I tried to play with keyboard and had to rebound almost all the keys even the action key was q my only major complaint about this game. Other than that pretty epic and damn hard.
|
I really dont understand all the rage here about mouse and keyboard. After getting used to where the keys are it's perfectly fine for me. Ok the key for the menu is in a stupid position but you can change that. I dont know maybe there is a difference in the keymapping between german and english keyboards but I dont see huge problems with mouse and keyboard.

I thought " hey, i have a lot of free time i would enjoy a game like this", that style of basically "2 button" combat is not really my thing but considering that i heard there is more "in depth" to the game than just dodge and attack i thought id give it a chance.
My experience goes like this:
- Oh... "selective clicking", well at least i am able to click - "Why the fuck do you hide the name tab at character creation !?!?" - There are a lot of stats that i can juggle between with classes... too bad they don't tell me shit about what they do in game and don't give me any under the hood numbers - Began the game, had to figure out the interaction button since its obviously too much of a hassle to change some text for PC in a port that was done in 4 months - " Those camera controls are real shitty" - " Why the fuck did i not get hit by the demon, the animation clearly showed him hitting me ?" shortly followed by " Why the fuck did i get hit by the demon, the animation was miles away from me" - When i reached the part where you get the shield and figured out END, fucking END is the button to open up the menue/inventory i gave up...
There are levels and levels of shitty PC ports... this is way bellow everything else i have seen. I am yet to see a game that hasn't even bothered to put there god damn menu on ESC. ( not that it would be the biggest problem i got with it, the controls are what i horrible but it just goes to show how much they "cared" for this port ) This officially has beaten the record of how fast i uninstalled and RPG from my PC after starting to play it.
Dude... U just made a mistake. Actually you have no idea how great this game is. At the beginning I reacted in same way. Tutorial in this game is terrible. It shows a place with bad dark graphics with uninteresting learning style. I gave up like you! Then some people on different forum convinced me to give it one more chance. I passed tutorial and go straight into the game... and I played 5 hours without any break
All old school gamers should play this game. It's really challenging compared to other titles on the market which are super easy. Its unlinear and theres so much to do! Lot of secrets, lot of places that you can go. This is crazy that you think you are going in good direction and then boom you just got onehitted by some miniboss :-) There are statistics! Seriously in modern times when developers abandoned statistics to some other poor-easy solutions and now we have a game with stats!
About gamepad... yes gamepad helps a lot but I wonder why people who play games dont purchase xbox controller ? Theres lot of games which are super fun on gamepad. I love it. Especially when u have TV HD 32'-50' and good PC. You just sitting on the couch and playing games liek Dark Souls on controller.
Give it a try guys. I know its bad port but still the game is pretty unique. I only dont recommend Dark Souls to people who get frustrated when playing. Game is really hard, especially if u try to figure out everything alone.

why do so many people bitch about the pc controls? its fine, i have a ps3 controller that i use on my PC for ps2 emulated games, but i passed on it just for shits. i lowered the sensitivity for mouse to 2-3ish and its perfect.
the only thing is that the hotkeys for inventory and stuff are kind of retarded, so i rebound them sensible positions.
use your head people and you will enjoy life more. also, that QQ post about the uninstall was hilarious. sucks for him i guess.
shit fps? i haven't noticed any slow down that hampered my ability to play the game. it runs way better than the console and has slick load times. if you have a crappy computer it might be a different story though.
mods? its a drag and drop, real complicated huh, not considering they wanted to get this game out to us as soon as possible.

man i raged so hard last night. i've died so many times trying to get to the bonfire in sens fortress lol, the last time i died i was right at the very last mob and you have to pass the swinging axes at the very top....raged sooooo hard
