Had no problem at all with getting pvp from lvl 30 to 125, sometimes i could get 10 invasions off in 20 mins which i consider pretty good (I started invading at Depths, then constant pvp at Anor Londo, Forest and Oolacile). Summoning signs for pve bosses are quite rare sight those days, but im not sure if it wasn't cause i was quite massivly overleveled for the content i was doing. And everytime i checked the game had at least 3,5k players playing it past week.
Dark Souls 2 is very much alive, and it ain't occasional players logging in from time to time. And now with the bloodborne hype and release of sins it's even better than usually. EDIT: I just did test it with fresh character, at Pursuer there were 3 summoning signs waiting for me, i did put mine too and got summoned in about 30 seconds. Same story with Old Dragonslayer, but here i had to wait for at least 1 minute before i got summoned.
So in short, ignore what guy above me said and feel free to get the game, it's so much more fun when you actually have the chance to interact with others instead of just solo hero pve.
Our opinions differ, the difference is im not aggressively dismissing yours and being a douche.

What youre looking for does not exist in DS1/2. Its just the occasional person logging on for an hour, not dedicated players. If you're looking for a game to invest time into a community, DS1/2 is not it.
Yeah I have dark souls 2 and i've played about 160 hours of it. But I only play pvp for about an hour and then leave the game for a week or so. I was just asking if there were still people to invade/ co-op with whenever I decide to jump into the game, but I got that answer now so thanks.

I think the DkS series has the most loyal fanbase out of the "not big" games out there, i believe they will be played for a long long time.
In fact BloodBorne isnt played a lot online (mostly because it has a terrible terrible pvp) a lot of people went back to DkS 2 or jumped to Sotfs... It seems that adding an option to play offline actually affects your populations who knew !!!

There is still people for Demon Souls, don't worry about DS1, a friend is doing it and he got invoked in less than a minute for Quellag and found people for basically every boss. For DS2, well, I still find people in NG+9 and get invoked and invoke super easily.

I was stubborn enough to try it.
First I tried to kill him with the lightning-resin for my axe, but he killed me before I could kill him. Then I figured out his pattern and how to trigger him to land and where it was save to stand, farmed humanity so I could get 10 estus charges on the campside in Undeadburg, and after I figured out the patters, I had another go at him with my second lightning-buff.
I killed him, and here's what happens:
He drops a re stupidly good sword, twice as much damage as my old weapon.
Honestly, the Bell Gargoyles caused me more trouble. I had like 10 tries, before I figured I might go there as a human and maybe get a hint. Well, I was able to summon an NPC who basically killed them solo. Bit disappointing.
Now I'm exploring the catacombs under the graveyard before I make another go at Blight Town, where the next bell is supposed to be.
By the way, how are you supposed to get there if you didn't pick the master key at the beginning? I went through the valley of dragons, but I haven't found another way in yet.
Just to say it again:
I can't remember enjoying a game this much! God I hope it's not over once I ring the bell in Blight Town.

you get there through the depths, which you also need a key for funnily enough

Blighttown bell is only about a third of the way through the game. Don't get too attached to the Drake Sword either. It is really powerful early but has a scaling of 1 damage (as opposed to 10% damage) per upgrade and the costs are insane. You will end up replacing it probably after Blighttown.

Sounds like you went through the back door to Blighttown. People who have gone both ways (myself included) would tell you that the back way is the less aggravating way, and is chosen by most people on subsequent playthroughs. But there are a few good items (and an additional two bosses) that you get by going in the front, so you may be interested. See if you can find a way down from Undead Burg...
No, that's the beauty of Dark Souls. There is an epic set up for ringing these two bells, but ringing the second bell is only about a third of the way through the game, and it only gets harder from there. You have a ways to go!
And as others have said, be careful about investing heavily in the Drake Sword. Feel free to use it while it does good damage, but it is expensive to upgrade and does not scale well compared to pretty much any other weapon in the game. Use this time to find a weapon with a move set you like and tailor your build/upgrade that weapon in order to have a better time down the road.

the drake sword its amazing for low levels and will be your weapon of choice for a long long time

On April 07 2015 12:06 Faruko wrote: the drake sword its amazing for low levels and will be your weapon of choice for a long long time Nyah, it does more "damage" to the player than anything else. If you start using it, you become dependent on it and as soon as you hit around 1/3 of the game the drake sword becomes almost useless and you're stuck with piece of garbage instead of weapon. To make it worse, you probably don't have any other decent weapon with upgrades and don't even know their animations. So you basically screwed yourself over.
Just ignore that sword, for the best of your experience. That's what I would recommend.

You have barely played one fifth of the game (and admittedly the best part too; nothing really beats making that long, difficult climb up all the way to the top of the church in the Undead Parish and finally ringing that bell). The first time I played I remember playing for 12-15 hours and countless deaths before I managed to ring the first bell. Nowadays it takes me one hour and a half and zero deaths to do that.
Learning how to play Dark Souls is like climing the steep side of a plateau: it is hard for a while but once you're past the climb, it gets a lot easier.

One thing i should mention is that at some point you might want to look up the DLC. You probably have it included in your version, and there is simply no way you are going to accidentally stumble into the DLC areas, they are very well hidden. It is not something you should do now, but a bit later, at some point after you meet someone with an impressive chest.
Also, that Master key is gonna allow you to skip large portions of the game. I would not suggest using it on your first playthrough. I would especially recommend not taking that entrance to blighttown you have found, for it is not the main route, but basically the exit.
Pay attention to what stuff you get after defeating bosses, that tends to at least give you a rough idea of where to go next. Usually there is some way you couldn't go before because it was lacked.

The first Dark Souls will always be my favorite, outside of Demon's Souls but that's just because it was the original and I was a kid. I've put 500+ hours on PC, a little on console and the game still surprises me every now and then with something different. There's so many awesome tricks in game, shortcuts, character interactions, strategies that differ from one another and are dependent on the choices you make from the second the crow drops you. The PvP is what really sucked me in, again there are many different routes you can take when building your character, and it's really hard to find carbon-copy builds outside of stuff like GiantDad.
PvP is better now on Steam servers than it ever was, when it comes to lag and connecting. It's punishing but it's also rewarding, because everyone is on the same playing field and if you're smart you can always turn a fight around. There are also some pretty advanced techniques and skills (engine bugs, not things expected to know) that will either reward you for pulling them off, or punish you for trying to be flashy (Toggle escapes, insta-block etc.) The skill cap and discrepancy is similar to the game GunZ: The Duel if anyone cares to know!
The amount of people online has gone up 2k+ the past week or so, probably as the hype from Bloodborne settles to a lukewarm, and there are almost always people to play with and against online. I have 4 different characters that I cycle through every now and then, all different level brackets and all entirely different builds; they each are a blast to play in their own right.
See you in Anor Londo =]

I'm just starting my first play through of this beauty, so don't kill me please .
I have the graphics fix installed. Any other suggested graphics upgrades you all would suggest for a newcomer like me?

Nyah, DSfix and you're good to go. Enjoy! Be sure to play on gamepad ;]

Does DSfix even work with the steam version of this game? Can't get it to run without errors starting. :/
|
I'm assuming you have to install that via Steamworks.
Will the DSfix make it playable on HD 5000 graphics in 720p?
I'm asking because otherwise I'll have to wait until I'm visiting my family and can play it on my brother's gaming rig...

And thanks for your thorough replies, maartendq, Simberto and frumpsy!
Yes, I should probably ween myself off the drake sword, but I haven't yet found a way to gauge if a weapon is worth using or not. Plus, I really love sword conceptually.

I'm not sure since I didn't play DS1 since it migrated to Steamworks, but I remember there was a new version of the mod made specifically to work with Steam. So, I guess it should work?
Yeah, checked on authors site: http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?tag=dsfix DSfix works with Dark Souls on Steam, so be sure you have the latest version of the mod.
SixStrings - well, hard to say. If the game runs good without the mod, then it should run good with mod as well, maybe slightly worse if any change will be noticeable. Try? It doesnt' cost you anything and shouldn't take much time
