Parrying is a skill that's amazing once you've learned it, especially against knight enemies, Black/Silver Knights are the best practice, though. As far as PvE goes, anything works, but generally katanas aren't that amazing due to how they work, bleed/odd attack angles/quick attacks are what they're used for, so they are more of a PvP weapon since PvE is more about blocking/dodging skills instead of dead angling to get around a shield/killing glitchers(no idea how rampant that is on PC since I am having issues with having GFWL recognizing my game and I'm too lazy to try all the fixes)
And yes, the graveyard is horrible, dont go there unless you know what is in there/you are willing to die to get the items since you only lose souls on death..
Pyromancer is probably the best starting class btw, followed by Wanderer imo, those give you the best stats for a bit more PvP/PvE focus, unless you're going for a more strength focused build. The best advice my friends gave me, though, was to just mess around, delete toons that you dont like, start over, test things out, find what you like and as you get more used to the game you can abuse the things you learned to not lose around ~150k+ souls you're going to lose on your first play through lol.
So I admit some curiosity. Given that this game has a remarkable number of weapons quite viable for quite long, what is everybody's favorite weapon?
I gotta go classic: Normal upgraded Longsword. Very middle-of-the-road, but I really like the moveset, and it's classy as all get-out.
If the control scheme was that mouse adjusted facing, I would go with Rapier-types. But I just can't stand having to move forward to back every time I want to line myself up right, and M+K lock-on is terribad. Longsword is a lot easier to hit with manually.

Great scythe is amazing with 40 dex, probably the best dex weapon in the game, and I also love the claymore for its moveset.
The longsword is surprisingly nice considering how early you can get it, I love having it for secondary shit like divine weapon, probably because it has the same moveset as claymore.

Uchigatana, because I like katanas. I've played around with other weapons, but I like its moveset the best. I especially like the forward thrust power attack. It has quite a lot of range.

Seconded. That merchant in undead berg has never lived past my first meeting with him. My first playthrough i accidently attacked him in panic mode (kekeke, i shit my pants) and discovered the uber katana without even realising he was a merchant.
I prefer it so much i use it over the drake sword. Hate that thing.

Good ol' Yulia. In my early runs, I always left him alive because I was afraid I would need arrows and he's the only one who sells arrows early on. Once you get comfortable with the game it's not a problem anymore, at which point undead merchant has a tendency to die.

Thirded. I just find Uchigatana fun to play with and I also accidentally killed the mechant before I even found out that he was a merchant.
I had been frustrated for a couple of days now with my lack of progress as I had tried and failed to kill Capra Demon. I knew how to kill it but just screwed up something every single time. But now I tried it for the first time today and it was a success. Feels good man. I just love the feeling of success this game gives.
My favorites are the black knight halberd normal+15, the great axe fire+10, and the reinforced club lightning+5. I liked the great mass too, funny and powerful =) The furysword looks cool but has a surprisingly poor gameplay compared to how cool it looks imo.

Really? Interesting. I find that it's incredibly strong and fun, even in PvP. One of my first / most played PvP characters had it in addition to an Uchi and I found it way more fun to use than katana+buff. The range surprises most people (including myself even when I'm using it) and the move set is fairly well rounded imo, at least for drawn out / patient duels where you don't just attempt to poise break each other until someone dies first.

Quelaag's Furysword's damage scales up with Humanity so maybe that's why you weren't particularly impressed with it?

Whenever I'm stuck somewhere, I try three times per day to try to get past it. When I fail to get past it the third time, I put down my controler, turn off my xbox and go do something else. This is to avoid frustration since the parts I usually get stuck at are rather cheesy...
It's my first playthrough and I'm not that far, but I have to say halberd +5 wins for me. It has awesome range, good damage and surprisingly swift normal attack. I also have longsword +5, but after halberd any weapon has too small reach for me :D I especially liked halberd against those black knight dudes, it worked great for moving away and stabbing them in the eye repeatedly tactic.
