No scaling with this though and the titanite chunks r quite rare right?

Elemental weapons don't scale, so they are useful for playthroughs where you don't want to level your offensive stats (except to get the minimum required to wield the weapon).
Titanite chunks are fairly rare / pain to farm. Not so rare that it's an issue if you plan to use JUST one weapon that needs them, but if you want to stay flexible and try upgrading multiple things, you'll be somewhat starved.

Chunks are quite rare. Black Knights(ones with a sword) drop them as well as Darkwraiths in New Londo. A few can be found here and there.

Yeah, I'm planning to just use this spear for now until i can fight something better that would hopefully by then have scaling. Man this game is so lore-rich that you feel like reading everything but dont have the time to :3

Also, the Royal Sentinels in Anor Londo are a rare drop. If you equip the serpent ring (for item drop boost) I found that they would drop perhaps 1/5 kills, which for that stage of the game is pretty good.

Drake sword kinda wearing out its usefulness It's kind of funny because when people joke about new players getting lazy with the Drake Sword the joke goes like "Drake Sword -> Lightning Spear -> ?????? SHIT GAME"
If you want to do yourself a favor find other weapons of which you like the moveset and play around for a while. The biggest issue with the Drake Sword is that you never figure out what you actually enjoy out of all the weapons in the game. Since pretty much anything is viable PvE it's super hard to recommend stuff to other people besides the usual "Do you like whacking shit on the head with a gigantic hammer?"

Its not wrong for players to say that about new players yea. I just play with what is the best for that stage and then when i start the NG+ mode I will definitely wanna try pyro or thief. This game has tons of weapons and I have that uchigatana just waiting to be upgraded and used.

I wouldn't use it unless you're sure you want to keep playing the same style for the next 30 or so hours...

magic users are really hard to start off with you just deal so much less damage early on.

Hey guys! I recently picked up Dark Souls to check what's this game everyone says only good stuff about (major reason was the steam winter sale, got it for 5 euro! :D). It's really hard to pick up, but once you spend some time running around clueless and dying left and right you get sucked right into it. And the best part is, I find this game annoying and frustrating more often then not but there is always this voice in my head that says: "you have to keep going, no game will beat you!". I have absolutely no idea where to go and what to do, I miss more than half of the pathways around the zones but I still have a lot of fun! Too bad keyboard controls aren't too good, but after a while you get used to it. I'm really overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in the game, it's awesome!
Man, those skeletons at the graveyard just after you leave Asylum are hardcore. I died so many times until I found an effective way to beat the small ones with a mace. But the big ones are beyond my reach. Generally I don't like fights with big opponents, since the game doesn't work very well. My guy doesn't always do what I tell him to and it's hard to tell if you'll get hit by their wide attacks. Although the worst thing is locking on a target, sometimes the game goes crazy and changed locked target all the time, which makes it really annoying to move around.
|
Don't go to the graveyard, it is a big trap to make you think the game is harder then it is. Everyone says the game is hard, so you start and randomly go to the graveyard, and then everything kills you. Putting a way higher level area right next to the starting zone just to fuck with beginners is kind of evil. Go where the zombies are, not where the skeletons are.

The lock-on going crazy I think might be a consequence of using KB+Mouse to play. Right Stick (which I'm assuming mouse emulates) changes targets when it's moved while locked on, so a slight adjustment on the mouse might be responsible for that. I haven't used KB+M so this is just a guess. Check out the Dark Souls keyboard and mouse fix @ http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~petska/. Controller is definitely the best solution though.

After all the hype I got this game from the Steam sales and bought a controller. I've played now 15 hours and have rung the first bell. With all the talk I had heard of the difficulty I thought this game would frustrate me more (I even played Witcher 2 on easy...) but I'm totally hooked and it's great to really feel how you get better in it. I started with a thief but have been using Battle Axe ever since I got it from some enemy. It made combat against shield carrying enemies so easy as it was heavy enough that the shield didn't matter. However I got bored of it eventually and now I'm trying Uchigatana.
I've been trying to kill the Titanite Demon near the smith for many times now. Sometimes I get the health very low but eventually I always screw up and die quickly. Oh well, sooner or later I'll succeed Or maybe I'll try something else first and come back later when I'm better.
Edit - Oh well, I decided to take the cheap way and bought a bunch of arrows and killed the Demon. Easy but really boring. Now I'm not entirely sure where to go next as there are a lot of options.

You got something from the gargoyles that interacts with something else you have seen before, if you want to follow the main progression. Otherwise you could hang around in the forest for a while.

I'm doing a random playthrough since I was bored yesterday, and I'm using exclusively the Great Scythe. I've tinkered with it in the distant past in PvP, but never for a normal game. Thing is so good lol...

Is it a good idea to kindle all bonfires to have more stacks of estus bottle? Also, is parrying super hard or am I just bad? :D
|
Usually yes, unless it is one where you won't spend a lot of time. But on your first playthrough, usually just kindle the thing as soon as you get too it.
Parrying takes practice. The timing needs to be correct, if i recall correctly you got a timing window of something like 4-6 frames, or 1/6th of a second to parry an attack. Also, parry the hand, not the weapon. You need to be close enough. Just practice a bit until you get the timing right, once you know it you can usually parry with a pretty high chance of success. Which is incredibly useful against knights.
I find the early hollows pretty hard to parry because their attacks are just so slow that you always parry to early because you don't expect that guy to take another 3 seconds for no apparent reason.

Parrying the weak enemies that bounce off medium shields isn't that beneficial anyway because they have no poise, so you can just crush them with ease. It's not until you get the enemies that don't get deflected by shields where parrying becomes really valuable, and you can just use the audio cue of their multi-hit patterns to parry the second or third hit of a string.
|
Yeah, sure. I just remembered trying to train parrying on the easy hollows first, and found it actually harder then the later enemies just because their swings take so incredibly long that i always parried to early, and i thought maybe that might be the problem for others too.

I tell you, buy a reinforced club to the undead merchand and +5 lightning it, it's awesome for such a basic weapon, the moveset is great, the hits are fast and precise but hit hard, the backstab angle is fantasticn the R2+forward hit hard and far... :D The 2 handed usage is also very useful, fast but heavy blows that destroy parrying. Makes you realize how even basic weapons you find in the first 30mn of the game are still viable (and more than viable, powerful) I think hypersakura2000 used this weapon in one of his video, I'll try to find it =)
