Easy way to kill Taurus demon is to leap at him from that tower, rinse and repeat. Yeah, that was the main mistake i made through most of the earlygame. You can block everything. It is a bit counterintuitive to block the giant mace a boss 10 times your size swings at you, or even far larger things where blocking them should not work, ever. Can't emphasize this enough! Took me a bit to get used to blocking things (even BIIIG things!) rather than running around aimlessly. After you gain more experience (and/or get faster rolls) then rolling is important and useful too, but blocking is crucial for your first few playthroughs.
As a Knight starting out, if you hate the heavy roll, just unequip a piece of armor or two to get below that 50% equip load. Even lacking a piece or two of your starting gear, your defense will still be pretty decent, and the shield is solid so become friends with it.

Thanks guys, I think I will try to beat him with blocks. I havent blocked in any boss battle with my thief just because he could roll through a whole room. And now its more like body slam, which screwed those few timings I already knew. Also where do you get that winged spear?

Quite possibly the worst introductory experience I have had with a game to date, hope its worth it. You need a controller for this game.If you bought DS for graphics you made a mistake. You can change to fullscreen from options. You can play lots of good looking shit games but DS is one of best games in PC for its gameplay and it is really challenging.

I also play on keyboard so you can imagine how many times I have seen YOU DIED. I like to go through games by myself but I checked this thread few times and picked up some things. So I started a knight who is really really slow, rolls are absolutely useless, how do you guys fight boses with him? Anyways I somehow mislicked after trying to leave my inventory and killed the first merchant which basically means I have to farm like 10 firebombs from zombies now to kill that Taurus. They dont drop really often but I have like 15 waistclothes now :/ So what do I do? Farm or reroll again? Put your levels into your endurance so you can carry more, unequip armor until you have below 50% load to roll quicker. Thing is, as a knight with a lot of endurance and vitality, you don't need to worry all that much about rolling, get a good shield and just block. Pretty much all attacks in the game are quite easy to spot, so just block when they attack, then drop the shield to get your stamina back quickly. When you've gotten enough levels into endurance and your shield is upgraded enough, you can block pretty much any attack in the game safely, so just focus on that and learning to manage your stamina.
As for taurus demon, he's really easy. Just go up and kill the archers first, get him to come out, run back and climb the tower and do a jumping attack on his face when he comes close, that should take his hp down by 30% or so. After that just wait for him to attack, run up and attack once or twice, then roll back when he goes for his next attack. He has pretty good range but he's slow and always simply attack in front of himself, so he's very easy to read. If you feel you're doing too little damage, use the pine raisins you find in the chest earlier to get lightning enhancement on your weapon and you will crush him.
It's perfectly fine to kill the first merchant, it's very common to do it since he drops an uchigatana which is a baller weapon.

It's right by the start in the graveyard next to firelink. Most people do a quick suicide run through the graveyard to get it and the zweihander easily as soon as they get there. If you don't go for the binoculars at the very edge you have a chance of getting out too.

Fyi for anyone in here, if you haven't played Demon's Souls, try to get your hands on a PS3 and play it. I knew that Dark Souls was pretty much the successor to that game, but it's ridiculous how similar they really are. I would've expected the game to feel a lot older, but almost nothing has changed mechanics wise from Dark Souls. Even the funny ragdolls are there. Metagame wise (character stats, etc.) there are a few different things but everything's very minor, imo.
The lore/atmosphere aspect is the same as well, minus the fact that you don't have a connected world. But the five zones you can visit via the central hub (the nexus) are large and have lots of undead burg style interconnected paths as well.

Another important aspect of Dark Souls combat is knowing when to lock on and when to not lock on. Simberto's suggestion about running behind Taurus Demon requires that you don't lock on (at least temporarily) because you're not going to be able to run to the side for as long as you're locked on, and rolling is slower than running especially if you have medium or heavy armor. The other really critical thing to know is that if the boss has a tail, chop it off for a weapon, and that also requires that you not lock on because locking on targets the center of the enemy rather than the tail that you want to hit.

Oh nice. Since I learned to lock I insta turn it on but it brings a lot of trouble especially i find myslef in the middle of an enemy group, camera goes crazy. Also as I said I need to look into boss blocking, never tried that due to thief rolls being so powerful. I take maybe 1/5th of the damage as a Knight at the start in opposite to lvl 18 thief.

so i finally got around to learning how to play
got some questions id like to ask some body

Someone recommended me to buy the Crest of Artorias because it allows you to farm like 7K souls within 2 mins. Is that still possible?

It is, the dudes right behind the locked gate give a ton of souls for the level you're at. Imo it's worth it to buy anyway because the other route into the forest is very tedious.

I did it if i wanted to have souls for something specific, like upgrading a new weapon to +10. Wouldn't do it just randomly to gain levels.

It's still possible but depending on where you're at in the game they can be very difficult enemies to kill. As others have said, there's no real reason to farm them unless you have a specific reason, such as buying materials / upgrading a weapon, etc.

As other already said: yup, buy it.
Usually that's what I did: 1. Kill Moonlight Butterfly, you should have enough souls from it to buy the Crest 2. Buy it damnit! 3. Be sure to find the hidden bonfire near the gate 4. Kill'em all 5. Kill the kittens (I find it easier from that side of the forest) 6. Cry when meeting Sif
Of course I also kill Hydra, but it happens at random moment when I feel like it, it's not really hard, just a bit annoying because you have to chase these damn heads ;]

I went the long way around lol. After I beat Hydra, I climbed up the ladder near the waterfall and got to Sif from that way. You can also farm Gold Pine Resin from those giant mushroom things up there if you want. I got smashed by those cats before so I sat on the ledge above them (they won't go around and they can't reach you) and cheesed them with arrows or dung pies.
Recently picked it back up again myself. Got a character to Anor Londo but was a bit too weak for it so my Str guy is stuck in Limbo there for awhile. I started from scratch recently using a dex build. So far it is going better. It's been kicking my ass but I am determined to beat it this time. Currently trying to find my way to the giant blacksmith in here and get Quelaag's Furysword. Kinda dreading O&S though after hearing so much about them.

The key to Ornstein and Smough is to never fall in the frustration of thinking that they are random. Never assume it wasn't your fault when you die on that boss fight

Just reached the gaping dragon, tried him once and almost won the fight but it´s getting too late here so I´ll try him tomorrow for the second time.He seems to be fairly easy compared to what I´ve killed before. The depths sucked though...
I was kinda surprised when I killed the capra demon at my third attempt because most people really seem to hate this guy. IMO the small street you´ve got to walk along to reach him was way worse. I hate these assassin-like mobs, seriously if there are three of them and there is no way to fight them one by one (like stairs or sth) you´re kinda dead...
But still, best game i´ve played in years
