After playing Da:O and Da2 I've been spoiled. Obviously neither of those games were as good as BGII overall, but their combat/character/advancement systems were clearly superior once un-inhibited by d20 crap. It works for some games like Icewind Dale II, but honestly I didn't like it in NWN2 and I think whoever is making it will be way better of ditching a d&d based character/combat system. I cannot agree. Dragon Age ruleset was indeed easy to understand, but that's because of how little there was of it compared to Baldur's Gate 2. In this game, more is better.

Don't worry, 4e D&D is already simplified for new gamers. More similar to Dragon Age combat system then older D&D.

They done a great job with Mask of the Betrayer storywise (and people praise Las Vegas more then Fallout 3) and with enough money and a good enough engine they can do a good job. Bioware has moved away from D&D games and their latest track record shows them becoming good at console like games. Bethseda was never about good storyline and characters so BG3 should not fall into their hands. Yes, MOTB and New Vegas are far better than the vanilla games imo. They capture the spirit of their respective originals much better (NWN 1 and Fallout 1-2) The thing that's left to decide is what system they'll be using. I _think_ they can make it work by moving away from D&D 3.5, but the thing about D&D is that it's so well developed, it's proven, and it works. However the thing about Baldur's Gate series is that it was so great story-wise that it could have literally worked on any system. As long as they don't dumb down the combat entirely - to the level of blizzard games and other MMOs, I'll be happy.

Anyway: i'm pretty certain it will be just another terrible rip-off game with the name of an old epic. Heck, even the console games (BG-Dark Alliance?) from the original time were pretty meh from all i heard. Still: gonna look into this and look out for later reviews on my list of honest "I fucking hate most 98% of all games" reviewers. To the above: I only know german quotes. No multilanguage at the time ![]() The voice acting was terribad, at least for the PC, but the actual translations pretty good. "R-r-regen oder S.onnenschein, ich genieße es im Freien zu sein!" "MONTARON! Ihr seid soooo enervierend! Ihr stellt meine Geduld auf die Probe!" "Montaron... Ich... ich hab euch nie geliebt." "HAH! aus ists mit dem verrückten Zauberer!" "Fü~r nu~r ein klitzekleines bischen mehr kann ich ALLES machen was ihr wollt!" (was that damned blacksmith for the ankheg platemails as gay in the original version as he was for us? xD) "Ich wollte Infravision wie die Elfen... aber dafür genügte es nicht, nur ihre Augen zu stehlen!" "Esss issst ssssinlosss sssichsss zu wehren!" (doppelgangers) And lots more of Xzar and that depressed Wizard guy. Havn't played BG1 in ages; but the 4 or 5 playthroughs i did left quiet the impression.

No idea how the original was, but the german versions of 1 and 2 had AWESOME voice acting. if anything i'd say video and voice acting has taken huge steps back from the feel and quality of that time. They may LOOK bad today, but still feel better for many old games. Like, there's actual heart and work put into it, while its all "hey, here, have some good graphics to look at hurr durr" today.

Like, there's actual heart and work put into it :S The polish localization was done by CD Projekt (the company behind CDP Red, the makers of the Witcher) and it was, by far, the best localization I have ever heard. I dare say it was the best voice acting I have ever heard in any language in any game, ever. I couldn't believe how much worse the original voice acting was. ahh

I played through BGII multiple times and the expansion, but I just now realized I never actually played BG I. Irenicus voiced by David Warner was one of the greatest decisions they ever made. Holy crap it really is an iconic voice.

![]() Question though: Is it even possible to get away from D&D? The game plays in Faerun, which is D&D world no? Would they be allowed to use its history and content and apply a different ruleset to the game?
