You say you've never heard of the baldurs gate franchise but you are able to predict what platform the next release will be on?

So the original HTML comments had references to the waxing and waning of the moon. Could just be simple poetics, but the moon just waxed and will wane on the 17th of March.

I really hope it will be a remake of BG1 and BG2 with improved graphics, a better AI and an interface tailored to modern resolutions etc. In my opionion Bioware is only a shadow of it's former self and the chances are pretty high that a sequel would only be an insult to the orginal Baldur's Gate.

I started reading this, started freaking out....and then it hit me.
Game developers fucking suck ever since gaming got big. There's *no* way that ANYONE could make a true masterpiece like those games.
Then i got sad

true that. everything is so different nowadays. back in the days of bg2, games used to ship with 200 pages manuals and leather maps.
still, i'm mega excited about this announcement. whatever they're selling, i sure as hell am buying.

The irony in that post of yours is almost overwhelming.

That is just not true.
Yes, some did have all that fuss, the AAA ones... What changed? Well, the developers realised they could just sell overpriced collectors editions and make an extra buck.
And btw.: Even back then people were bitching about games not being the same as they were before.. But sometimes, there are truely "GRAND" games like the BG series, SC/BW or Half Life. Which are just "better" than their concurrence and probably allways will be.
I mean, imagine if there was no Baldurs Gate... What would people call the best CRPG? People would fight over this, best story would go to PS:T, but best CRPG alltogether? I would not want to judge that. NWN? Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim? Fallout 1+2? The Witcher? What would people call the best RTS? Command and Conquer X, Y or Z? Dawn of War? Company of Heroes? Supreme Commander, Age of Empires?
Games back then were not "better". Some of the best games ever where created "back then", but there were also T.O.N.S. of ABSOLUTELY terrible ones... Crap you can't even imagine playing nowadays, games with the control responsivness of a Formula 1 car on a frozen lake....

I agree that there were a lot of really bad games back then. But the best ones are still better then anything that comes out today. And if you told me then that 10years later I would have said this I would not believe you. I still cannot understand how nobody took BG2 ideas and improved on them and gave them good animations and lots of voice acting.
The best that we got was Dragon Age 1 which is still max at 75% quality of BG2.
Fallout 3 is not half the Fallout 1 and 2 quality. Deus Ex 3 is maybe 75% DX1 quality.

I really miss having to carry 2 or 3 dead characters worth of gear to the nearest temple and paying to have them raised. Or even getting turned to stone AND SHATTERED = DEAD FOREVER. BG1 was the bomb. First time I killed an ogre with a bunch of level 1 characters... memories

What? No... why would you miss that? I always found reloading to repeat the fight to be easier. I'm all for consequences, but playing inventory tetris and spending 10-15 minutes (This coming from me who considers Homeworld 1 to be one of the funnest and best games ever, and that game is slow paced like a snail) reviving and requipping half the group is not fun, it's just tedious. I want to just pay the price for failure and be done with it, and that is why I liked the injury system for DA:O.

Still waiting for information....;_;

Baldur's Gate???
NO WAY NO WAY.
I'm in love.

Well I think this is probably what they meant
Pong Developer Challenge
and it's certainly no BG3.
And even as an iOS/mobile developer I'm not particularly interested... because the contest sucks? (explanation in link)
The only way it's worth the trouble (financially) is if you 1) work alone and 2) win first prize. Pretty crazy, it's like they didn't even think about the terms when they set this up. I guess there's some prestige factor / possible future opportunities for winning and working with Atari but that's the only draw. If you have the greatest pong-clone idea ever and submit it to this contest, Atari will own it ALL and in perpetuity! That's not the usual way for this sort of contest. Barriers to entry on the App Store are so low and Atari is asking for so much work, you're almost better off just publishing your own game yourself.

Baldur's Gate is one of the games where the price point does not matter. This will be bought! I cannot fathom this to be subpar at all. Maybe I am just too excited though.

I am going to be very angry if this game ends up like a Dragon Age.

There were a lot of shitty ideas that flopped. but they also made the really grand stuff.
Nowadays, we just get a bunch of mediocre stuff out of everyone. Nothing truly terrible, but nothing that I'm going to reminisce about 10 years from now.
