People know he went to Harvard. But why did he go to Harvard? He was rated the #1 high school player in California, and was the first #1 from California in history not to get a Div 1 scholarship. Why? Probably because he's Asian. Harvard was the only D1 school that gave him a spot, so he went there.

And while he was there, in his senior year, he put up amazing numbers against great college teams like UConn, BC, Georgetown, etc. He was the finalist for the best point gaurd award for college.

And he still went undrafted. Let's do this again: why? Probably because he's Asian.

Only when he smoked #1 draft pick John Wall during a pre-season shoot around where most of the world tuned in to try to see what this John Wall was made up, they actually got a look at Jeremy Lin schooling him. So Lin finally got an NBA contract, only to have doubters doubt him AGAIN. He got very limited playing time in his first season with the Warriors.

Like two weeks before the current NBA season started, he got cut. Then Houston picked him up. Then the DAY BEFORE the season started, he got cut again! He was fortunate New York needed a PG at all, and he managed to squeeze on the roster and never get any playing time.

Every step of the way, he had to prove more than the black/white guys have to prove, just because he's Asian. And he's not even small for his position. In fact, he's bigger and faster than most guys who play his position, but he is labeled as not an athlete. In fact, most commentators would point out his lack of athleticism as that is what people just assumed.

The fact he put up such great numbers (in fact, All Star numbers) when he finally got legitimate minutes shows that he had at least NBA caliber play in him. If he did not have that, he probably would have been cut on Friday on Feb 10th. Friday was his deadline. And he pulled out three All-Star performances to save his job, as well as the Knicks coaches. And all without the stars on his team.

And he's been sleeping on his brother's or his teammate's couch in NYC this entire time. Now that his NBA future is secure, he'll finally get his own place. From sleeping on a couch to being the hero of New York in a week. Zero to hero.

How can you not root for this guy?

Reading his wiki page is kinda harsh. He was constantly berated at college games with tons of racial slurs by opponents' fans such as "Wonton soup", "Sweet and sour pork", "Open your eyes!", "Go back to China", "Orchestra is on the other side of campus", or Chinese gibberish". One point, one of his Harvard teammates claimed that someone from another team called him a chink. No athletic scholarships offered nor drafted (though the latter isn't surprising). I think if anyone deserved to break out and earn this popularity, Jeremy deserves it the most from both a basketball and life standpoint.

It's too much to expect him to keep up this pace, but I hope he can keep performing well.

lin's race probably played a significant factor in golden state's signing him cuz their backcourt was pretty stacked then. He hasn't gotten much playing time prior to last week because he was pretty awful in the little that he had played and there wasn't any reason to place him above douglas.

I wouldn't say he's faster than guys at his position. He is pretty tall though. Look, I'm a Chinese-American and I'm a big fan of the guy but Lin's basically a low ceiling player. Has his race affected how he's been assessed? Yeah, I think it probably has. But he's a 6'3 point guard with a 6'3 wingspan. This is an issue. He doesn't really handle the ball with his left hand well. He can dunk off one foot, which is nice, but it's barely - I would not call him athletic.

Still, he's in the NBA and he got there through a tough path. I think Lin represents more than he actually is. An Asian-American guard who can handle the ball, drive to the basket, score at the rim. Not Yao Ming or Wang Zhizhi. Not the uber-disappointing Yi Jianlin. I've always found that Asians in American urban atmospheres have had a cross between an inferiority complex and hyperactive code switching - though that's probably for another thread - Jeremy Lin does a lot for that. There's all these undertones of masculinity and race relations and other crap that no one cares about.

He also has a really weird looking jump shot.

And to add on, several NBA players including Steph Curry, Amar'e and Monta Ellis said he was much better than people realized before this recent stretch. He also played in a summer charity game with Lebron and co too.

ETA:

Hahaha Lebron. Gotta love this quote in his interview on ESPN

"I'm an easy target; if someone wants to get a point across -- just throw Lebron's name in there," James said. "You could be watching cartoons with your kids and you don't like it, you say, 'Blame it on LeBron.' If you go to the grocery store and they don't have the milk that you like, you just say, 'It's LeBron's fault.' "

Lin has been a great spark for the Knicks. He's defnitely shown he has some game in him the last 3 games. It has been all the more impressive given Melo and Amare have been out and he has basically carried the team on his own.

He's been able to pass his first big test against the Nets, Jazz and Wiz.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes against a strong(ish) Western team in the Lakers on Friday. I hope he lights them up--it would be awesome.

I wonder how he'll fit into the rotation once Melo and Amare are back? I guess he'll have to slip back to third (or fourth?) option by default, but I wonder if their play style will change (i.e away from the high usage % Melo plays).

He runs the PnR pretty well so this should help Amare's game a lot.

I just hope Knicks peeps don't overhype him too much like they did Dougland and Shumpert (who am I kidding--they already have).

TBH, LeBron lets stuff like this get to him way much. I think it actually does show a bit of mental frailty about him. He's the biggest and also most polarising figure in the game given what happened in Cleveland.

He just needs to accept the fact, move on and focus on basketball. Why he cares about what people in the media, community etc are saying about him is beyond me. As a professional basketballer with elite aspirations he should focus on his game and nothing else. He, his teammates and the Heat staff are the only basketball related opinions that should really matter to him.

The irony of it is, by replying to the constant media criticism like this, he's actually somewhat proving their point.

I haven't seen the interview, just the quotes you posted.

The criticism he receives is stupid. I agree. It's there to sell advertising space because people love to hate LeBron.

I just can't believe he even bothers to acknowledge it though. I guess I shouldn't pretend to know what he's thinking etc, but from an outsider looking it, he seems to want people to like him way too much.

i think you're not emphasizing that he's born and raised in the U.S. enough

imo the reason why he's in the news is because there was already attention to him because of his race, and they documented his highschool - college - nba struggles. there are players who struggle like that as well but people don't pay attention to them.

like ben wallace played in division 2 ncaa, then was an undrafted player. he's gone on to have big success, but his every move wasn't tracked cuz of his ethnicity.
