I quite like the idea of being a road builder and being paid in obsidian + a nice plot of land a few feet from the main road. I could sit in my new indestructable fortress taking potshots at the hapless travellers walking along the road i helped build.

I never really considered other factions that would mostly focus on trading or other services. Wonder how they will fit in.

Given that factions can set to "peaceful" (thus being immune to attack), I'd say that merchant factions will fit in quite nicely, and be an awesome addition. Hopefully some enterprising people decide to go for it - the server will need some diamond palaces!

Yeah, I agree. I think factions that want to trade exclusively should be liable to attack as well and be forced to hire mercenaries.

My understanding is that only the admins can set factions to be peaceful, and I don't think they'll be setting them that often.

I doubt I'll set anyone as peaceful. But I can say if you declare yourself as neutral to all causes and never takes sides, chances are my faction, the Sentinels, will provide protection for you should you become harassed.

you have to apply for the "protection" though.

Or alternately, you could use the cash influx you get from trading to deck yourselves out in the best possible gear so nobody wants to attack you. Or you could use your influence with other factions to ostracize a faction that gives you trouble and get everyone to ally against them. The possibilities are endless...

Not built in, no. But im sure a faction can create a such a system.
