I noticed the opposite, actually.
1.6 had, oh, 5 viable guns (USP, deagle, m4, ak, awp). Whether it was worth buying the galil or famas was debatable.
However, with these more cluttered maps, movement and angles are more important. Think of how open 1.6 maps were... you just had to have your crosshairs at head height in open hallways, where maybe there was an occasional box.
With more angles, there's cover to help close distance, tight spray patterns matter more (read: smgs are strong), shotguns aren't a joke, etc.
One of the main reasons rifles were so great in 1.6 is the lack of cover in that game. With two people standing in relative openness, battles were "whoever deals 100dmg first". With lots of cover and movement, other weapons become more viable.

MP5 was extremely common in early rounds (typically winner 2nd and loser 3rd). Famas and Galil are fantastic intermediates.

Quick search revels no connection with milkies and competitive cs so I take back what I said :D. Even if she did play 'competitively' I can assure you she was a nobody, especially if she was a source player. I dont mean to blow my own whistle but Ive played cs since beta 3, before it was even owned by valve and played as high as cal-m when CAL still existed. Ive seen more changes and internet arguments over recoil and movement than I care to remember. Everytime a new version was released it was this same shit all over again. People play for 15min, get owned, and say the update sucks.
We played the same leagues and timeframe- highfive!
I wonder if this will rez Gotfrag? Although I'd rather just have a dedicated CS section of TL
Is anyone on TL playing ESEA?

CAL-O S8 CAL-IM S9-S10 CAL-M S11-13
I suppose highest achievement would be defeating S2K, x30, and CeribOne to take 2nd at CPL qualifiers a long, long time ago (lost 13-1 against zEx).
MP5 was only ever used if you won pistol round, because mp5 is deadnuts accurate spraying and moving and just ended the pistol round losing team's saveround quicker. If you lost 3rd you either saved or deaglesaved- MP5 too expensive and doesn't do enough damage against helmets, while a $650 deagle could net you a round if you got the first kill or two.
No one bought Mp5's on riflerounds (or buyrounds). The galil was worse than the AK by enough that saving an additonal round was often justified, and the Famas was essentially personal preference. For example, as the team's deagler, I was actually quite strong with the famas on burst (similar timing to deagle) and used it extensively- sometimes even over the m4.
But for most people, no one would ever buy the Famas, just save and get m4+armor+kit+nade+flashes next round.

no, people did actually buy famas. for the same reason they didn't buy mp5. like you said, you played a long time ago, so your info is a bit outdated
to tofucake: maybe mp5 was common pre-1.6, but as the skill level improved and save round strats evolved, mp5s became rare. for the longest time, most people on good teams choose famas/galil if not colt/ak after pistol round wins

Tiffany is actually right on this one- I dusted off my CS mouse last season for some ESEA, and the game had changed quite a bit. I did notice many more famas/galil's as a second round purchase instead of mp5. Monetarily it makes sense- if you can make do with the same weapon on the 3rd round against m4's or ak's, you're up in economy.
I may have been a bit hasty in that response
@benjef I dunno, TAC9 could be a contender for deagle as a pistolround buy over glockarmor if you've got a strong pistoleer.

The only real reason why the winning team didnt buy colt/ak after the pistol round was the risk of losing the gun, or simply having 1-2 possibly 3 guys get killed while carrying it. That totally fucked up the 4th round when both teams are to buy in full. Having 2-3 players too broke to buy on the 4th round could easily cost that round and subsequently the next round or 2 as you try to save.
The mp5 was a good option, and worked well because the losing team didnt have body armor. I agree that the famas/galil definitely became more popular as time went on.

i really love this game so far. actually feels like a worthy successor
but i really want to hear what people don't like about it.

It seems the achievements Seppuku and Mad Props are broken. Any confirmation?

Never really played FPS or CS before but damn CS:GO is fun to play. Been playing with a friend who played a lot of CS:Source. It's fun being carried in public games

Okey, now that I've played the game (+- 2h) I'll comment on it. I've played cs 5.2 -> 1.6 till 2006 when I quit playing (and not played since). So I love and consider 1.6 to be THE competitive FPS game. Is GO as smooth as 1.6, no it is not. But I did have a semi-boner playing awp+deagle on deathmatch (10-15 ms). It does have a VERY similar feeling as I remember it in 1.6. I've played pretty much with stock .cfg so some things can improve with tweaks.
Some things I didn't like: - Sounds are pretty poor. It's very hard to estimate the distance where the sounds are coming from. - Too much unnecessary crap in maps. Does the game have potential, yes it does. Will comment again when I try AK and M4 tap/burst/spray after some hours/days of play.
That's all for now.

The only way to get a key is to pre-order? Or is this in Open yet... or do people have keys?

There are also people who were invited to the beta before the 14th. Each person was given two keys so some people are giving them away. For example, steamgifts.com usually has a bunch but you're unlikely to win them with so many people entering.

Thanks guys, think I will just pre-order then.
