That's a hard question since they're so good. FE4 and FE5 are definitely more unique - FE4 only has about 10 stages, but each stage has many different points you need to capture, the maps are huge, and it has a very interesting mechanic in which you need to pair characters strategically because you'll use their children in the second half of the game, and the stat growths of their children are determined by who you pair together (alternative, you could pair nobody and then you'd get shitty substitute characters instead of the awesome children). FE5 is extremely difficult but it's quite rewarding, and it has an item stealing system that I really enjoy. However, I don't really recall the translation patches for either game being all that good, though, there could be new versions out by now. FE4 and FE5 are also both related by story - FE5 is more of a sidestory to FE4.
FE6 and FE7 are related in that FE7 is a prequel to FE6, oddly enough. They're also both great games, but their mechanics are, in my opinion, less unique than FE4 and FE5's. If you've played FE8 before then you'll feel right at home, though, so if you're limited on time and don't want to figure too many things out, then definitely check out FE6 and FE7, especially since the translation patch for FE6 was, IIRC, a lot better than the ones for FE4 and FE5.
If you ever get a Wii, then DEFINITELY check out FE9 and FE10 (that's Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) because those are, in my opinion, my favorite FEs out of them all.
In conclusion, FE6 and FE7 would probably suit you the most because they'd be the most familiar, and you can play FE7 portably, though, you'd probably have to use an emulator on your computer for FE6 if you want to play it in english. But if FE4 and FE5 sound intriguing to you then definitely check those out! Just depends on what you want - familiarity or something really different.
I really wish they would bring back that mechanic^
make it something where you have 2 halves of the game and characters with an "A" support relationship who are of the opposite sex should have kids. That would be sick. Also I really like the idea of the dismount. That would be a fun feature in a new game.
Dismounting isn't very fun - I believe only FE5 had it - as your characters would suck after dismounting. Their stats would drop and they would be forced to use swords. There are a few stages where you would be forced to dismount too (indoors)...
Well I meant if it was a cooler sort of mechanic. something that doesn't nerf everything. Like say it lowers strength but raises skill and speed. Or If you have a certain number of horses and horses posses the canto ability, so before a level you outfit certain characters to be mounted.
I was thinking more along the lines of that. Strategic tradeoff
Love these games so much, I'm the type of person that only plays non-multiplayer games once, twice if it's godly, but every now and then i'll break out the gba cartridge and play some of these masterpieces, i'm probably on 5 playthroughs of the 2 gba games and 2 on the DS game.(Havent had a chance to play older or newer versions sadly :/) If you haven't played these, go and do it now.
I've played through FE 7, FE 8, FE 9, and FE 11 as described in the OP. I'm glad to see fire emblem get some loving on TL. It's definitely one of my favorite series. Permadeath was one of the most amazing things about it, as it made you really think through every move.
Best fire emblem I've played?
FE7: good enough for Nintendo to finally port the series to the U.S. Enough said.
Best character?
Ike. Total baller. Can practically solo the later stages of the game.
So I just started playing FE6, I never even heard of this series until this post. And first off let me THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I mean I played FFtactics and stuff but, imo this is waaay more enthralling. Characters being able to be destroyed @ a whim brings a level of intensity that is exciting, the combat strats are very fun, and I really like the town and trading/shopping system, it makes every map feel epic, and really makes you wana get all the goodies it has to offer =p. So I just wanted to say a big thanks to this thread for showing me an old school rpg that is FKING SICKKKKKKKK! TYTYTYTYTY! Newayz back to act 5!
i remember buying fe8 out of nowhere cause the box looked really fun. turns out that i bought one of the most addicting games ive ever played in my life.
since then, i played all the recent fire emblems that came after the 8th, but i havent bothered to try out the old ones yet.
If only fire emblem was for the computer....... I loved FE8, best ever imo. Instead of fire emblem, I've started to play the Battle for Wesnoth...which isn't as good.
Is the gamecube version of Fire Emblem good? I'm not really digging the 3d stuff though.
Ummm.... @ above they are called emulators. You can get every single one I believe besides Radiant Dawn on the computer. The Gamecube version is very epic. I loved it. if you don't like the 3D it is pretty easy to change animations. That's what I did.

OOOH I gotcha. That would actually be really cool now that you mention it. If they did that they had better include a clickable minimap though lol. I have been asking for that for ever.

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are EXCELLENT in my opinion. Great music, great characters. The animations in PoR look a bit lame, but in Radiant Dawn they're superb. Also, Haar. Fucking Haar.
Also, the Black Knight is one of my favorite video game villains just because his character design is so damn good. Not to mention his theme is ridiculously epic.
God I love the Black Knight. I don't want to spoiler why I love him more. On a related note, the most disappointing thing about PoR was Petrine if you ask me. Her music was also amazing.(Deep Walking Bass of Death) But when it came down to the battle it just wasn't as epic as it could have been. Unlike with the other 4 Riders.
