You could probably do that but some weapon specific nodes are quite good.. You could also take those later once you find a good weapon that makes you want to play that weapon type. Links would Melee Physical, Added Fire, Faster Attacks, Increased AoE. I didn't like Multistrike too much when I played it in the beta, it kinda slows you down and with the gem nerf it also isn't the best dmg gem anymore.
In the beta my build was like this. As you can see it uses Bloodmagic keynode, which is quite handy. Lots of Life and you can spam every skill like you want, even when there are no monsters around (good for Leap Slam movement). I didn't use any aura but you can definitely still use Herald of Ash if you want. Hatred is too much life lost though.

What is the best source of information for this game? I'm extremely new and just going through the skill tree and selecting things that I think are good.

That's fine for if you aren't giving up quickly. Some people prefer picking up a decent build so they don't lose their nerves because PoE is quite hard if you are new. Best source of information? Depends. For builds check out the official forum, else right now I can recommend you http://poedb.tw/us/ for infos on where to find skill gems etc.

You should look for a guild or find sth to play with because the new content isn't too newbie friendly and can be somewhat frustrating the first time you play.

Has anybody been linking their golems to much of anything?
I can't really figure out what to link my flame golem to beyond like minion life... It's dmg seems pretty irrelevant beyond the buff it gives me.

If you like to play solo, my favorite golem gem setup is: Golem + Culling Strike + Increased Rarity gem. Of course they won't always cull but better than nothing.

That might be a good plan actually
I had been thinking about a separate culling flametotem for bosses but the golem seems easier to do in general even if it's pretty much never gonna cull trash.
I'll probably add in minion speed for the 4l in the hopes that it attacks/casts fast enough to cull more stuff xd

i can vouch as i've never made it this far in HC before and thats before you factor in malachi XD

I'm not convinced this is optimized but it leaves options for growth in life, dps or a curse focus depending on what I decide I need later. I'm still 64 so I'm not quite at this point yet.

flame totem build
If this was your flame totem tree at 73, what would you do next? theres a few easy life nodes, besides that I have options...
I want to be able to run wrath and anger + clarity but I don't know if that is a reality without enlighten even with the reduced nodes on the northwest there.

Anyone else having latency/spike issues with the EU servers? Amsterdam and Frankfurt both cause massive spikes for me... from my regular latency of 45ms it is jumping to 300-2000 every couple seconds while playing solo... Even at 3am european time, when you would expect much less load.
Playing HC with that is kinda tricky ^.^
