I started late this league and i'm just casually running thru the acts (still...).
A friend gave me a Tabula so I can/could experiment and ended up with some generic cold/dmg-over time tree that i intend to respecc into something else if I actually get really into the league. While messing around i played a bit around with Frozen Orb (on a 4l, Vortex/Coldsnap are in the Tabula). I actually really like Frozen Orb but never really played it, I know that it was nerfed some time ago but it still seems to do very decent for clear on a 4L whiteout me really scaling it (i just use GMP + some supports that make cold better :p)
Thats where i got some big questionmarks. It obviously does cold DMG, but most cold nodes nowadays are dot-multi and not plain cold/projectile stuff. How are you supposed to scale this? Just add more and more Projectiles with flat damage from Gear and basic Cold/Spell-Damage? Convert it to fire and scale Ignites (i doubt this) or even make it poison? I'm at a loss how your supposed to make this thing be good later in the game.
I think you mean Winter Orb Don't have much insight, though I seem to remember Occultist with Void Battery and Badge of the Brotherhood being the most popular route. poeninja appears to concur https://poe.ninja/challenge/builds?skill=Winter-Orb
After a week of Toxic rain and EA ballistas, I'm also looking to start a new character, similarly cold themed (most likely last char of the league). Thinking either Elementalist or Ascendant, which both Dan and Waggle seem to be playing, though can't find much info about that. If anyone has some experience with either builds, I'd be really appreciative.
When It came out, I believe you could actually level with it, maybe even with no twink gear (Ziz was doing it on witches). More recently, it was more common to transition into it at a later level. May be wrong, but kirby might have played it a league or two ago, perhaps even Woo?
I'm done with my build, it's absolutely horrible and my progress is so fucking slow because of it so I can't make currency/levels to get to a point where it's less horrible. Like, I know what I need to make this build "work" but it will take a lot of investment, which takes forever and is frustrating because the build is trash right now, and then it will still be clunky as fuck compared to previous iterations. For me personally, this is honestly the worst league start since I have started playing the game. Contemplating either quitting or starting a new char. I kind of want to get into Sanctum because all my attempts have been a lot of fun. However, I'm extremely unmotivated to level a new char and get it equipped with 400c of liquid currency. Maybe I'm going to do something I have never done before: sell my items and do a full respec...
Honestly, sounds like liquidating your gear might be a good choice, since from what you described it sounds to me like even with more funds you probably wouldnt really feel like you get good bang for your buck from your current character?
I just found a replica farrul's fur.. In SC Ruthless Group Found. Not sure where we are gonna get the bestiary item for cat's buff from, though. ;D

Correct. I'm leaning towards SRS because it seems to be the hot shit now, I haven't played it since it got added to the game and I'm not in the mood to theory craft a build myself right now. My char is also a witch, which helps.
Gz to your drop. :D I haven't followed everything regarding ruthless. Did they remove Einhar/Beasts?
Skimming through the SRS gear section in the video, it does seem to offer much much more DMG in comparison to bane for the buck, hence I spoilered my easy red maps recommendation. + Show Spoiler +
if you want an easy build that takes you to red maps SSF, I can recommend subtractem's bane chaos dot occultist build. the shield + wand version is super fun to play and immensely mobile helping you dodge stuff (in sanctum and ofc mapping)
but I find it not to be the best sanctum experience due to the relatively low damage and having to cast 3 skills (bane, essence drain + blight channel for full DPS doesnt feel good without a couple divines gear that I don't yet have I'd say)
If you're interested, look at the new build guide rather than the old POB guide, especially if you already have a witch and dont need to level stuff.
Ah, true, my post isn't laid out clearly, my mistake. I was thinking single target dps for sanctum, which I, personally, found lacking without div's in investment in the bane build.
Bane is awesome for mapping even ssf. Until early red Maps is easily possible with just a 6 link plus ssf gear.
Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'll try Bane next time or so. Never played it.
I used my evening yesterday to buy some stuff for SRS, respec etc. Still need a couple gems and gear pieces but I haven't been able to liquidise all of my gear and am broke now. Will run some low level stuff for now I think to get the build going.
Side note: Contrary to popular believe I think a lot of builds bring you into red maps fairly easily with a 6L and SSF or cheap gear. Usually they only stumble on some map bosses and tanky rares but for me personally that's ok. I think the roughest time I had before was in 3.15 with Cobra Lash and that was still fine. This time was different with the removal of the Cold Snap threshold jewel. It literally changed the investment from 1c to 10+ divines for 30 % of the smoothness and also required sacrificing damage/defense (12 passive points).

The stand out there is '6L'. Getting to red maps on a 6L should not be a problem for an remotely decent spec. But especially for those who don't trade getting to a 6L is already a decent amount of effort. I think what you can do on a 5, or especially a 4L is much more indicative of what is a 'good' build.

That is fair. My statement was from a trade perspective because you can buy a corrupted 6L a few days into the league for 10c. But I feel like the reddit, youtube, twitch bubbles seem to largely think only a few builds can easily make it to red maps in trade (that's where most people are these days anyways) but that's not true imho. A lot of builds also do that even on a 5L as well. I mean, even on my trashy build this season I could still kill stuff in red maps with 2 wands I had used since act 2, which is probably more akin to a 4-5L with decent wands or wand/shield in ssf. The problem was mechanical-wise and another 5 links could not have saved the build. Also with div cards and corrupted strong boxes among other things I think getting a 6L ssf is still easier than getting one in trade back in the day by far. Still quite a lot of effort, I agree. All that being said, this also depends on what you would consider comfortable. I'm personally fine if I can 1-2 shot blue packs. However, this means that some rares or map bosses can be very obnoxious. I could see why people would get annoyed with that. I personally don't like the game design in this regard. You easily rip through white and blue monster but rares and map bosses sometimes have 100+ times more sustain. The balance feels off. But that's a whole different can of worms...
Hmm in the past I would say SRS takes a lot of investment to be good, especially since minion jewels could get so expensive. It always seemed like a low brain power, high QoL build, that sacrificed damage for said QoL. Did something significantly change for SRS, or is it just because most other summon builds got gutted? (e.g. spectres)

Einhar is still in the game but beasts are mostly trash, unless you like magic talismans. Considering there are 0 Farrul beasts that exist on Ruthless SC, it seems very hard to get the beastcraft. No clue how you can target farm, if it is even feasible in Ruthless

Yes, things changed for SRS. it has like 40% more dmg than last patch. Also, SRS builds these days for the most part are nothing like some years ago. Only some people use them without poison nowadays. Poison SRS is the meta, with United in Dream and The Covenant.
I'm not sure, didn't they also buff poison for minions?
Personally, I didn't play much lately. I tried to play some in the last hours, but every 2nd instance is laggy as shit. I guess it's prime time plus people have time to play.
They massively buffed abyssal jewels in 3.19. More damage, chance to poison for minions etc. They also removed the minion damage penalty for damaging ailments in 3.19. So yeah, last season they were already as strong as now but it was a bit of a sleeper build because none of the content creators caught on to it and content creators are very significant drivers for the meta these days.
I played a bit with SRS now and mapping feels worse than the build before. : / It's literally the first build I have ever played which deletes bosses but can't kill packs at a reasonable rate. I also don't get why it's considered a QoL build Evo? I mean, yes, SRS auto-targets, which is really nice. However, you have to spam so much it doesn't feel great.
