I think I can answer your last concern, even though it's a long while I've played that build. Occultist explosions disrupt contagion spread so it's not recommended, even if the damage is better I think. Chaos Occultists generally use Bane for clearing afaik.

yeah, consensus is that occultist is better for bane, but trickster is better for ed/cont. not 100% sure why though.
obviously malediction + profane bloom are insanely good for bane. but not sure on the ed/cont part.
edit: on poe.ninja metamorph hardcore 93% of ed/cont characters are trickster. 5% occultist. rest other.

Cobra Lash Assassin is really strong and easy to get started, but I find it struggles in T16+ and high tier bossing. You are squishy as fck, reliant on dodge, and have few good sustain options. I'd recommend going Pathfinder Claw instead if you want to do cobra lash. A bit worse damage, but you don't need Bino's to proliferate, and you have the option of passively gaining flask charges during boss fights
I overall do recommend that archetype though. It's very fast, and is a bit "off meta" so you won't be competing for items as much.
I'm personally rolling Storm Brand Inquisitor. I don't think it's as OP as other builds, but it's got a very relaxing playstyle. I think I will need to get Inpulsa's to get the clear to hold up. There's also the option of using Archmage + Orb of Storms + Tempest Shield Spam for big single target damage
Some kind of chaos build is the safest for sure, though you will have some early competition if you need certain items. Seems like most people are turning to Chaos DoT as their starter

Yeah at this point it's a toss-up between Storm Brand Inquisitor or Toxic Rain Pathfinder...
I am really lazy and don't want to switch runes for blade flurry. Everyone and their mother and their dog will be running a chaos DoT one way or another and Cyclone CoC Ice Nova Assassin will need a lot of currency to play effectively with Cospri's
I am also a filthy casul that will probably only run that 1 build I choose from league start to finish (I can't bear leveling another char and going through the Acts again...)

kinda depends on your expectations for clear. I did more or less waggles version of storm brand inqu last league as boss killer, and honestly i found the clear to be fine (as LL without Inpulsas)
But maybe my definition of "fine" differs from yours

How is leveling with cobra lash as ranger ?
Kinda forgot about Pathfinder in my plans, but its been a few years since i last played one and i remember it being super enjoyable with all the flask stuff.
So if leveling isnt too terrible, I might just do that

I did it as Assassin last league, but it was very good. Plague Bearer and Withering Step help things a lot.
The beginning is slower than your average caster, but especially when you hit cruel lab for pathfinder and get the poison prolif, it should be amazing

Probably settling for SSF Tec Slam Jugg to start this afternoon. Chill and easy for the weekend, haven't played melee in quite a few leagues now, and I'll keep an eye out to see if anyone stumbles into any hilariously awesome wander shenanigans.

Think i'll really do claw poison pathfinder then. Sounds a lot of fun, its something i never practiced leveling AT ALL, compared to everything else i considered, so its sure to be a spontaneous clusterfuck (as is tradition), and i miss pathfinder flasks. And if i hate it, i can always switch to bows and do scourge arrow poison or so.

Ziz posted a Volatile Dead Spellslinger concept, would probably be similar to the old Poet's Pen stuff but more flexible. That's not a bad idea. If I go wands I still want to try Kinetic Bolt first, but this could be a fun swap later. So indecisive
