Reliable EHP is as you say much better in HC; Armour, Resists, Life, ES > Evasion, Dodge, Block. That said, there are some subtleties to which class to pick that I don't fully understand and goes beyond "witch has a lot of close ES nodes" that could make a ranger better for the same build.
For some reason I got super tempted to build a flicker last night and bought a terminus est. The cheap prices on stuff are so tempting! to stop doing self found. gah.

I'm really enjoying POE HC, shit is scary as hell when you haven't played through the content before.
I have to say though, it feels like witch has an advantage over ranger in HC because energy shield seems more useful to me than evasion in boss fights which are usually the most dangerous part of the game plus I seem to DPS more with shittier gear. Am I way off in thinking that? Both forms of defence have their limitations. Energy shield has this issue where it's very difficult to recover inside fights. 1000 energy shield mitigates a lot of damage obviously... until it's gone. Then it doesn't mitigate anything until you stop taking damage long enough for it to come back. You can use ghost reaver or zealot's oath keystones to help recover it, but those come with their own drawbacks.
Evasion has I figure 3 big problems. First is spells: you don't evade spells. There are some sources of spell dodge, but those aren't evasion really. Armour isn't very good here either, but energy shield is. Next is forms of physical damage that don't roll evasion. Mostly certain boss attacks that can't miss, but also a few physical spells or degens. Evasion also does nothing there. Lastly there are 1-shot damage mechanics. While evasion is nice in that it helps you not get hit a lot of the time, you will eventually get hit. Much better to get hit 3 times for 1/3 your health (and heal in between) than to get missed 2 times, and hit once for all your health (can't heal that lol).
It's worth keeping in mind that the single biggest reason to pick a class these days are their ascendancies. Almost everything else about a class is available to the other classes with enough passive points. Berserker (marauder) spellcasters are very popular this league (even in hardcore) simply because the ascendancy class is so strong. Despite marauder not really having many nodes that you associate with spell casting (people just take all the life haha).

You could either get a Callinellus Malleus (one hand mace, decent dps) or get empire's grasp gloves -- they reverse knockback direction.

Yea it's kinda funny seeing caster berzerkers running around with hundreds of points in Int.
I made a slayer, my first melee char without Vaal Pact. Running uber labs is finally possible

Well, dual spell leech is just insane. Now with MoM being meta even more so. Atziri's Acuity especially is crazy in this meta, though rightfully very expensive.

After spending ungodly number of hours in this game grinding multiple chars, I've finally reached the end game with this BLS build.
BLS really trivializes all the boss fights and is by far the highest single target DPS I've ever seen/used. I did shaper with 1100 str, his 20m hp just melted away in an instant.
Since the fight was so easy, I went back and farmed him about 20 more times and got a Starforge. Will attempt to use all my saved up fuses for a 6L tonight.

First shaper ever (in hc) for da 40/40 boisss!

Damn, grats!
Your gear looks preeeetty good haha

Kinda hit the end of where this character is gonna go, I think. I generally don't follow guides or anything while building, and because of such I probably wander into some traps and/or just make shitty choices. Feel free to give it a glance and offer some feedback. Most I spent on any piece of gear would be the Belly (~45c) which I then 5L'd. I'm sitting on an exalt and 50-odd chaos, so if there are any obvious and substantial improvements in there beyond just better rares, I'd be curious to know.
Also not 100% on hatred / herald of ice / reave honestly. I dunno how to evaluate reave vs other options like cleave or something + melee splash.
Feedback is appreciated!

grats on shaper dood
@tomatriedes ranger classes are generally worse in HC with low budget / low levels, but with enough budget you can mitigate their downsides. they usually have higher clearspeeds. Scion versions of the same build are almost always safer though
It's amusing to see threads on reddit asking for buffs / redesign of scion. it's already OP in HC (wander mainly), I'd love some buffs
@Fleetfeet - going for crit instead of bleeding would probably be better damage. It's a bit strange to use Scaeva as your weapon but not utilizing crit. Using hatred + HoI in conjunction with bleeding also doesn't make much sense.
I think you have to go all in on bleeding (Brutality, better phys focused weapon), or switch to all in on Crit. I probably would go DW with an off hand Death's Hand if you decide on crit, though this will hurt your block
You have 90k dps with a poor weapon and suboptimal setup so I'm sure the setup can be stretched to 150-200k dps with some investment.
You could also use Blade Flurry as a gem swap (or just switch to it completely), it's simply better single target dps, though worse clear than Reave.
I think Outmatch & Outlast is better than Painforged, even if you are max block. Not sure about this one tho tbh
you should use Vaal Reave, it helps your clear
You only have 117% increased life from the tree, so it's pretty impressive you have 5k life at all. If dying is a problem you might want to take more life.

Thanks! I figured there were definitely some holes. I'll play with those and get back to you.

Even the squishier builds I've played tend to have ~140-150% (softcore), and 200% is what I tend to prefer to shoot for at least. Gear must be pretty solid, you could probably have 8k+ easy.

Does anyone here have a really cool build that needs funds? Willing to give away some cash to help out, but don't want to ruin anyones game.
Give deets.

made a crit tree but I'm not confident if it's better than what you already have. I don't understand how PoB calculates bleed damage. you can take a look at what I did if you want though.

I don't understand how PoB calculates bleed damage. you can take a look at what I did if you want though. pastebin - https://pastebin.com/F510gZTm The bleed dps is basically double the number in the calculations cause the char has 50% bleed chance. The calculation itself is just dependant on the base weapon dmg as you can see quite easily and on the inc and more bleed multipliers.
|
But PoB considers Crimson Dance a dps loss basically regardless, so I'm not sure how that factors in to anything. PoB also incorrectly reports my resists over max, so idkidkidk. It's a useful tool, but I don't always trust it.
Did some reworking, but ran out of regrets. Most notable change is swapping Blade Flurry for Reave. Reave always felt kinda bad, Blade Flurry feels a bit better, so that's nice. I'm toying with swapping HoI and Hatred for Vitality and Haste + brutality, but it feels kinda silly considering I just specced out of most of my bleed.
Ultimately this tree is what I feel like I'm working towards. https://pastebin.com/v6SqHH83
As for the 5k life, I've prioritized having HP on pretty much everything. Lioneye's Remorse and Starkonja's go a long way with that, but I think the only piece of gear I have that doesn't have life on it (that could) is The Anvil. Well technically Belly also, but...
Also re : Violent Retaliation vs Outmatch and Outlast... Violent Retaliation is usually at 15ish stacks, so its comparing 10% more phys dmg vs 80-120% increased phys dmg, in most situations. For now I think the increased wins.
|
No, Crimson Dance isn't factored in (yet; they should make some kind of option in the configs for it) so you gotta multiply the PoB bleed dps by 8 if you have picked Crimson Dance and assume you have 8 bleeds on the target.

Imho the "take all the life (or ES)" is the one thing GGG just can't get right and it hurts the Game. Add in broken Spells like DP or RF and things become strange.
But still loving it . This league i got 89 arc-miner, 87 Flicker, 90 cospris discharge and 2-3 naked 75-88 chars , none truely decked out but all red map viable ... But that Kaoms would be BIS for any char that doesn't need a Chest-6l annoys me to no end + gear whiteout life (or ES) just being useless for the most part. Its just about not getting randomly oneshot after some Point.
Btw: What is wrong with the t13 lair boss? I crush the others on most of my chars but this one? My miner could probably do him but the others get just wrecked harder than any guardian could dream off wrecking them.
|
At least that one dies kinda "fast". Dark Forest is the same one but much more of a pain. But yes, noticeably harder boss than most others.
Also I don't mind Kaom that much, it's rare and does have a decent drawback. There are worse offenders like Drillneck for bow chars.
