arcane surge seems like the quintessential more damage multiplier which i was really hoping ggg would move away from in favor of some more mechanically interesting supports

i was thinking you could do Spell (w/ fast cast speed, EE procer?) + Arcane Surge + CoH / PCoC + Curse / ICS

annoying to keep up, but I would prefer those over LW on a wand spell build

Cant you just put a fast casting spell on FC gem use a 3 link. ... lvl 1 low mana cost, why shield charge and restrict self so much. pretty sure casting SRS will proc it.

It's 30% chance which last 4 second so if you use a non-dmg non-utility skill to proc it, then it'll take at least 1s in a 4s window for a 30% dps boost. By then it's better to just spam your main dmg skill instead.

So then whats the problem. 30% more is hardly the strongest modifier you can find in the game, and its % chance to proc. In the case of totems where you do no dmg i can understand the draw, but as a 'main damaging skill' there must be better choices.

Yeah I was referring to the shield charge part. It's not worth it to have a quick casting 3L setup to just proc Arcane Surge cause that time can be used to dps with main skill instead. However the buff is pretty powerful on its own so best to couple it while doing sth useful like shield charging around.

Well if you were already using a spell to proc EE, curse, or maintain power charges, you could add arcane surge for some potential dps.

regarding it's usage with shield charge, IMO it's way too easy to maintain. While traveling the map you will be naturally proccing it. Then when you want it immediately, you just shield charge the ground in front of you rapidly. Totem has an easier time with it yes, but any build uses shield charge to reposition / proc fortify during fights. I think the damage is too free

Well we already use OoS to proc EO, and 30% is way more than what OoS usually has to work with to proc EO. I guess OoS now has one more duty to perform unless you are also using it as curse delivery system.

Also I have been playing around with a Fireball build that does not depend on Ignite damage but uses Immolation for 2nd strike and those after it. The problem is that if you replace Immolation with Elemental Focus you get noticeable better dps :D
I am not sure Immolation is worth it at all. Elemental Focus might have once been a fair trade when Ignite was very good but atm it seems to be by far the best option for fire build.
Only problem is reflect but I guess Elementalist can help with that. I got over 200k dps with Fireball when using Elemental Focus on a 6L.

And totems win again. I just made a totem Fireball build using Scion, Soul Mantle and 2 Kikazaru and 1st ascendancy Guardian, going for critical hits, Assassin as secondary ascendancy. Each totem does 160k dps and I got 3 totems (and with Wise Oak active it is even more).
Also and this is so funny, since I am using Ancestral Bond my Orb of Storms does no damage and Assassin has 20% chance to get a power charge from hitting a full life enemy :D :D this shit is so OP :D
EDIT and if I switch Slower Projectiles for LMP for map Clearing I still get 100k dps per totem.

WOW thank you for the orb of storms knowledge, didn't even realize. I think maybe you can shield charge enemies for charges also? will test tomorrow

fireball totem is a good idea. I was also thinking magma orb, freezing pulse, or frostbolt had potential

Eh oos works with pcoc cause each hit makes separate rolls. However by some account (I havent tested) only the initial cast of oos will count for Arcane Surge proccing.

Shouldn't that be obvious? It says it procs when you use a supported skill. I.e. you have to use the skill, what the skill does is irrelevant. Proccing it with OoS is pretty inconsistent but not necessarily a bad idea if you have free gem slots. Using it with Shield Charge / Lightning Warp / Whirling Blades seems like the best choice if you actively use these, but if you got the gem slots you can link it with OoS too.

Given how important unreserved mana looks like it's going to be in 3.0 I think a return to curse on hit could be likely with orb of storms on a boss.

Something like oos coh inc aoe warlords mark or w/e seems like it could be really quite good.

I tried that, it's only the initial cast.

Pretty much a non-factor since during that cast time you might as well cast your main skill again.

I am thinking fireball elementalist for beta now, non crit PoB has my DPS pretty up to pretty respectable numbers

but the build seems pretty weak single target... if there aren't adds around I can't shotgun my explosions

so maybe I won't do this after all

(but on 2nd hand, not many builds are looking like they will have fast AOE clear and top tier single target dps)

regarding arcane surge:

you could put it on enduring cry, with faster casting and increased duration

there'd actually be a point that way - endurance charges, and enduring cry casts really fast

so it'd be less of an annoyance as doing it with over skills.
it'd basically be a half second of casting for a 6 second buff. but also give you endurance charges
