I was the first one who clicked "not at all", team please~

Sure, if you enjoy it go for it by all means but in terms of actually making currency it's pretty far down the list from my pov. Regular mapping, trading, lab or even alting jewels early on are all a much better investment of your time, at least in HC temp leagues. I'd be genuinely surprised if this somehow ends up better in SC temp leagues considering chaos is usually weaker there.

Even IF you're into it unid is a terrible idea early in a league (first week), you're losing both money and time by doing the recipe instead. Later down the line unid with shitty bases (which adds more time loss because you need to not id everything after a map) is acceptable I guess.

What convinced me completely of not doing it a few leagues back was vendoring my chaos tabs at the end of a league. On average you get enough alt/alch shards back from my experience that you realize you're going through all the effort for .5-.6c at best.


I usually keep some jewelry around for regals just in case I need one for something, easy to generate.
Chaos never worth my time.

So after I got my Breach character build completed and ready I got an urge to make something cool with my Mjolner in Standard before I go full time Breach.

How do you turn Lightning to Fire you ask? Well you take Avatar of Fire. Then you get Call of Brotherhood ring and you link it all with Cold to Fire support.

So Mjolner is Arc+ColdtoFire+Fire Pen. Like most fire/ignite builds I took Elementalist for free Proliferation. So I went in search of additional damage sources. Since I need to stack lots of Strength (and Int) for Mjolner I am also using another similar item Repentance for free Iron Will. Well since Str now gives me spell damage I bought Astramentis (also helps with Dex requirements)
Big CON with Mjolner is lack of gem slots to put supports in so now I am thinking how do I get more damage for my Arc to get big burns.. well since I am in templar and marauder part of the tree, there is lots of life regen here as well as +1% max fire resist... so Righteous Fire for the sweet 59% MORE spell damage!
So I equipped Rise of the Phoenix, Purity of Fire and I got a Ruby Flask as well as a dousing healing flask.
This is the passive tree this version of the build is aiming for: www.poeurl.com/VsS (this is poeplanner version: www.poeurl.com/Vtj) I need to thank someone from the guild that helped me refine it
Also I need to note that in this tree I use Elemental Overload while currently I am testing with Resolute Technique.

The last part of the build is how to activate Mjolner. Well I wanted to be away from danger and recent nerf to Mjolner (it can activate every 250ms up from every 100ms) means I don't need to use MoltenStrike with GMP to get 10 activations per second. So I chose Spectral Throw with GMP, Faster Attacks, CurseOnHit and 2 curses (Flammability and Temp Chains). I am testing with Tabula. This lets me use my mana for Purity of Fire and Anger. Spectral with these links costs 15 mana per use or basically nothing (I can get it lower if I use lvl 1 Spectral). For version that uses Elemental Overload I would need to replace FA with Additional Accuracy.

So how does this perform?
I test with a lvl 81 character. With lvl 18 arc and less level of other gems when I turn on lvl 15 RF the tooltip says my Arc does almost 8000 fire damage per hit. With 4 hits per second it is up to 32k dps (average dps lower). With Fire Pen and Flammability everything non boss dies fast (white mobs die from one use of Spectral Throw without use of RF). I tried up to tier 8 maps.
Vs Map Bosses it does less damage than wanted. I got a Scorching Ray Totem setup for those to help, it is still slower than wanted. This is a build with Mjolner and Astramentis and multiple high quality gems, I want more boss kill speed.

I think the biggest problem with vs Boss kill speed is that I don't get 4 hits per second on bosses and I am not sure how to fix that while still staying at safe distance. Another solution would be to find a way to do bigger hits so burn can kill the boss but I don't have an idea how. I could use Frost Blades+Multistrike to get fast 3 hits in but that one makes you stand in one place for possibly too long while with Spectral you throw them and shield charge away.


Any tips are welcome (or bigger redo of this build if you got a better idea)!

What I plan to test next is use Elemental Overload instead of RT to try to get that 40% more damage. Hopefully my accuracy will be good enough. I will try to use Frost Blades+Multistrike as that saves me one support (compared with ST+Faster Attacks+GMP) so I can fit Additional Accuracy.
Also it is not realistic this build will be using 6L so I need to put one curse on Blasphemy and just have one on Curse on Hit connected with main attack. Or since I will need to use OoS to trigger Elemental Overload I can put one Curse there as well. If I can come up with a good 5L setup I can buy a 5L Cloak of Flames instead of Tabula and see how it performs with one of the two armors that are best for this build (other one being Lightning Coil). They are best because receiving Physical damage turns them into elemental damage and it triggers my Elementalist Paragon of Calamity which gives me 40% increased damage.

Also I need to try to use Vaal Lightning Trap and see how much that helps.
Would Rallying Cry be something to try as well? Its generic damage bonus should boost burn damage as well?
Or maybe I am now overextending with the amount of stuff I need to trigger in combat to boost damage (RF, Vaal LT, Rally Cry)

Any tier 8 or less map bosses with good health/fire resistance you guys suggest I test this vs?

PART3:

OK, so now I tested these setups.
#1 Cylone+AddAcc+CoH+Warlords+Flammability
#2 Frost Blades+Multistrike+CoH+Flammability+AddAcc
#3 Sunder+FA+CoH+Flammability+AddAcc
#4 Spectral Throw+FA+CoH+Flammability+AddAcc

#1 Awesome for murdering normal mobs on maps, probably most effective for clearing maps. Warlords curses anyone that I hit and then Arc leeches life for me. It helps that when I got Righteous Fire(RF) on, enemies are in range of its DoT and it gives bonus DPS. On the other hand it sucks vs bosses as this is not a defensive melee build, it is even worse if I use RF as my life regeneration of 500+ life per second drops to nothing due to need to sustain RF. And I only need RF for boss fights.
#2 Kind of works for both map clearing and bosses. But due to Multistrike it fixes you on spot, also the need to namelock enemies to hit them is super irritating. If I could force myself to use it, it would probably be best choice but the feels of playing with it is off.
#3 This skill is kind of fun because you only need to point in general direction of enemies. It clears slower than both Cyclone and Frost Blades but it is safer vs bosses and does not have the need to namelock enemies like Frost Blades. But still kills bosses slow. Didn't try it with Multistrike as my 5L armor only has one red slot and didn't want to chrome it just for short Sunder test. And I am not sure I want to have my character stand still for 3 attacks with sunder having 15% LESS attacks speed modifier built in
#4 So in the end I came back to Spectral Throw again. I figured I don't really need GMP since Spectral hits multiple enemies anyways and procs multiple Arcs and GMP does nothing vs bosses anyways. Spectral lets me throw it and run around having hammers come back to me and hit more times. Quality Spectral Throw gives attack speed and with FA support (and I will probably need to take accuracy node near templar start) I could get my ST to 2 attacks per second and since it hits once one way and once coming back that would result in 4 attacks per second which is what I need vs bosses. But I need to do more testing. I only ran 2 tier 9 maps with this setup.

Conclusion for attack skill testing:
Cyclone makes map clearing most fun but sucks vs bosses. Spectral Throw is better vs bosses but slower in map clearing. Sunder and Frost Blades each have their problems that make them weaker than cyclone in map clearing and weaker than ST vs bosses and sometimes in map clearing as well.
Blade Flurry would be perfect skill for this build if it only worked with Maces :D

I completed my equipment, not perfect as it is hard to buy anything on Standard but I got resistances maxed, I got 4500 life at lvl 83, 5L Cloak of Flame, Voll's Helmet (with 12% max life roll). Items can still be upgraded (belt and ring only give me +50 life and boots are at +80).

I tested Cyclone on Tier 10, Tier 11 and Tier 12 maps but with a friend that is self cast Flameblast and bosses on those maps were terrible experience for this character (probably main reason why I gave up on Cyclone), but it could also be that is due to lack of experience fighting those map bosses.

I just figured out that Arc has 70% effectiveness, maybe using Anger aura is not the best idea. I might try to switch to Blasphemy or Haste Aura.

How is DPS now?
I managed to hit max of 12k per Arc when I got RF on and Elemental Overload activates. Since this is based on Lightning skill you know that they got low min damage as well. In theory if I can proc my Arc 4 times per second this would be max of 48k dps before counting in resistances (that are reduced by 5%+Fire Pen gem+Flammability) and then burn damage is even more.

How does it feel to play this character?
It is loads of fun, Arc hits stuff at edge of screen and sometimes off screen and ignites them and then you proliferate that to others there. Cyclone version is especially fun.
This will be even more fun if I will finish Uber Lab and get the Elementalist's Paragon of Calamity as any physical, fire, lighting or cold damage done to my character will boost my Arc damage (due to conversion of all elements). Also it is possible that while I got RF on, that might count as fire damage being done which would result in immediate 40% to fire damage (if that works I might want to try to switch my body armor to a 5L Lightning Coil so any incoming Physical damage turns to Lightning and boosts my damage even more)

Also by trying life leech cyclone I had a crazy(crazier) idea of using dual Mjolner and Vaal pact and Cyclone to Spin To Win! :D :D
That is IF 250ms cooldown on Mjolner is per weapon and not global. With Cyclone that could result in 8 casts of spells from them. This build would not be 100% lightning to fire, probably crit Assassin and CI so each weapon can fit in Life Leech.
In theory leech should be good enough to keep you safe from anything but one shots. This would probably be a Spark version to use that +1% base crit and projectiles bonuses Shadow has. Of course this one is even more expensive with needing two Mjolners :D

Probably too crazy due to Mjolner Str requirements. You would waste too many points trying to get Str on tree or you would need Str on all equipment.

With Vaal Pact, does VRF instantly leech you back to not-immediately-going-to-die, or does it leave you on 1 life for a moment and require other attacks to leech back? (i.e., does the leech from VRF's damage apply before or after it removes your ES?)

after. VRF is quite safe with vaal pact, some amount of leech and a target to hit although there are lots of funny fail vids where the player cast VRF outside of range and was stuck at 1 hp with no regen due to vaal pact

VRF is safe indeed, but there are some things that can be an issue, like missclicking it when there are no enemies or when there are enemies with cannot die aura that have no hp (I think? pretty sure there was a RIP vid about this).

Man this league is tilting me. The second time I logged out being alive (~ at 3k ES) only to log back in to standard. On top of that I had anotther annoying death while leveling. Hadn't even gotten to yellow maps yet.

I played my Mjolner Arc Elementalist some more, tested different setups. Bought a 5L Lightning Coil armor and a new ring to cap Lightning Res again. For now I settled into using Spectral Throw+GMP+FA+Culling Strike+Add Accuracy, all Q 20 (except FA) for the attack speed boost. I got my attack speed with SThrow to 2 aps so with returning weapons I can hit bosses 4 times per second which is a cap for Mjolner. I now got a Blasphemy+Warlords and Purity of Fire and I got a CwDt(lvl 1)+Arc(hits 5 targets)+CoH+Flammability. I am also back to using a Scorching Ray Totem (at least it can distract enemies for a bit :D) and I am also using a Vaal Lightning Trap. It is fun to Arc from Mjolner and burn stuff while staying out of melee range. I have zero problems in up to Tier 9 maps. I have to try solo in higher tier (got some Tier 10 and 11 to try). My build is also still not 100% ready and I cannot have Righteous Fire on all the time without needing to use a Ruby Flask but I should be able to do that in few levels (only lvl 83 atm). I could speed this up by buying a lvl 20 Purity of Fire but for some reason everyone is asking a lot of Chaos for them, it is hilarious. Are Righteous Fire builds that popular? :D

I think this build would be pretty good in Breaches. You mass murder packs while staying out of range. But it is not a great boss killer.

Also I tried my first Uber Lab yesterday with my Poison Rain Scion. Beat Uber Izaro "fairly easy" in first two battles by putting my two Vortex(100% to fire and then to Chaos) totems down and running around the arena like a headless chicken screaming "Oh my God" each time he would use that sword "lacerate" attack that would do 4000 damage. I found that when he does the jump attack you get a few seconds where it is safe to stand in place to cast other stuff (like my Wither+CWC+Firestorm).
Anyways I got to last battle and I didn't have room to run around and do the same so I died
My character has slow ES shield regeneration since I took out Zealot's Oath and took Vaal Pact instead. The plan was to stand still, and leech by using Atziri's Promise flask but I would not dare to do that vs uber Izaro so I would just run around and ES never regenerated

Yo, pretty casual player here. Played on and off a bit, but never really gotten into endgame, like killing Izaro on merciless is an achievement for me. Though I play pretty much self found, which pretty much increases the difficulty of the game by a lot.

I want to try getting 24 challenges, for that portal skin, done this league.
only dicking around a bit so far, ripping to breaches in act 1 normal. =D
Since I play SC and a bit brain afk after work I don't mind that much, still put a little bit of a damper to my enthusiasm. Think I liked essence league better.

Maybe I'll skip breaches until I got decent AoE and/or the movement skill of my choice?
Last league I played Arc Inquisitor and Flame Totem Chieftain. Don't feel Arc is cutting it anymore (esp. in breaches) and I don't really want to play Flame Totem again. Not sure what to do next. Didn't try EQ so far. Didn't really got into BV (thought it made the game too easy when I briefly tried it last time). Haven't played ED/Contaig for a while, so maybe could do that. Warchief totems also seem to be a thing...

So I guess:
a) Any tips on Breaches in general?
b) Good builds in Breaches/For a mostly sf challenge run? Want to have something really tanky with a lot of quality of life (me lazy). Clearspeed is not _that_ important to me, just want to be able to get the challenges done. (note: I dislike evasion/dodge based defenses).

FlameBlast Totems require nothing. Stack Life, Bonus fire damage and get cast speed so totems hit anything. Get totem damage and life/totem placements and you are set for clearing anything.

FlameBlast Totems require nothing. Stack Life, Bonus fire damage and get cast speed so totems hit anything. Get totem damage and life/totem placements and you are set for clearing anything.


I struggled with breaches with dual flameblast totems. They get overwhelmed very quickly. Otherwise it's an amazing build. I'd recommend some temp chains + blasphemy or decoy totem experimentation to overcome the breach problem. It may also become a non-issue once you have enough cast speed (I had about 105% which wasn't nearly enough). Usng Elemental Prolif may also help (I was going Crit Inquisitor, otherwise I'd recommend Elementalist).

On a different note: Has anyone played a doomfletch elementalist post shaper of desolation changes and knows how viable it still is for doing hard content?

Thanks for the input.

Found a guide on the PoE forums for a dual FB totem warchief (Link) stating that it has less dmg than ele and inqui, but feels safer in breaches due to the life leech and tankiness.

though that one feels super similar to the Flame Totem Chieftain I was playing last league.
