Since you're a starter, I would recommend the basic madcatz stick or hori stick for your respective console (360 stick works on PC no problem) If you get more serious, you can upgrade to a TE or VX3 (both very expensive), or you can take the basic madcatz stick and mod in sanwa parts (what I did).

So any idea how to deal with focus attacks that my opponent throw out when I'm doing say a jump-in attack? And some good ways of using focus attacks myself? I use Gouken if that helps.

If they FA your jumpin, don't use a normal when you land, it will get stuffed and you will get crumple. Instead, when you land, block it (don't shoryuken/tatsu when you land, they *can* backdash it). If he goes for a level 3, neutral jump to dodge and punish. Typically FA's are used to charge meter off fireballs. As a gief player, I also use it to break in (since it has so much range on him) and combo into ultra. You can use FA's to punish jump ins, and also use them meaty (on opponent wakeup), although it isn't safe, and if you do it meaty, you should just backdash when he gets up and hope you baited a shoryuken or something.

Because if you could see the PP of people who join, you could dodge them. I'm pretty sure that's exactly why it's hidden. Doesn't really have an effect after you've played them once though.

A lot of these "0pp" people are actually SSF4 veterans who are switching to AE and have plenty of experience (or are smurfing on new accounts). Kinda like in Iccup, where people reset, and that "D" player is really a gosu korean smurf. I got so much pp easily when I started ae lol The SSF4 ladder system is good in that the skill level approximations are relatively accurate (i.e. a 1.5k PP is about the same level as a 1.6k PP player), whereas in SC2, there can be a major difference in skill between two people in the same league. However, SSF4 doesn't stop low level players from running into you (in SC2 if you are masters you won't run into a bronze player), even the match search lets you look for "more skilled"

Start doing empty jump-ins, then throw when you land. Mash the hell out of jab when you land after jump-in. Just hitting a second attack will snuff their focus attack. Maybe you are doing your jump-in attack way too early as well. Try not to telegraph all your moves to your opponent. As for good uses for focus: - Use it to tank a cross-up, dash out - Advancing forward through fireball war, so that you get at dangerous range - Scaring your opponent: just dash out of your focus attack before letting go a lot - NEVER EVER EVER EVERRRRRRRRRRRRR do focus when Akuma has Ultra 1/Super. You WILL get hit. ALWAYS! lol

W down E right Space up then map 3 buttons in a row as LP MP HP ditto for 3 buttons below that, as LK MK HK then i suggest 2 buttons for throw and focus (lp+lk, and mp+mk) since hitting two buttons vertically on keys as small on a keyboard, would be a pain in the ass, might as well just use one button.

If your opponent focuses attack a lot, do more empty jump ins. You can punish with throws, focus breakers or just bait the attack and then punish. Poke with more LP/LK spam rather than slower pokes, which punish focus nicely and you can hit confirm into damage or knockdowns for most characters (learn this combos, you can look them up in the character forums on SRK.)
