One of the dumbest things in SF4 is seeing someone eat a reversal because their execution wasn't good enough due to misplinking. It doesn't feel good for the player who dropped the combo because they've done it a thousand times before. It doesn't feel good for the player doing the reversal because they feel they lucked out. I think the input buffer change is a welcome one because game results are going to come down to intended decisions more often than they already do (which is a lot), impacting the game positively overall.

Persona 4 Arena has a 5 frame buffer and there are still some differences in online and offline play. It helps but it's still there. Honestly, it kinda feels like the Street Fighter crowd is the only one that holds up 1 frame links on a pedestal. It won't make it any less competitive if they aren't in the game.

1f links falls under execution, and if you main any execution-heavy characters (such as E.Ryu) you need a vibrant local scene to improve under zero lag/tournament conditions. Japan's biggest advantage is that most of the best players are situated right in Tokyo (with exceptions such as Pugera’s Ibuki), so they get a lot of high level practice that’s easily accessible. Whereas big places like the states we have to send our players coast to coast just to compete. And contrary to Kazunoko’s answer to Mike Ross’s question at the end of CEO 2015, I don’t think NA/EU has caught up to Japan just yet. The Japanese are pretty good at lying as to not hurt anybody’s feelings, as anyone who watches Iron Chef can attest to (celebrity sponsors of challengers will always say outright their challenger will beat the Iron Chef, even though they stand no fuking chance in hell). With this change, online practice will more likely translate into tournament results (Edit: Probably not as there are other factors involved). Maybe we'll see more NA and EU players step up their game just from the sheer number of players.

The kinds of players who go to tournaments and local gatherings, also tend to be the people who are more dedicated to the game in general. They tend to be better players, but that has nothing to do with online vs offline practice. If local scene is essential for becoming a top player, then how do you explain Infiltration/Gamerbee/Xian/etc.? There are many examples of online players who also do well offline. That includes most top players (Daigo, Sako, Poongko, Infiltration, etc.) and many former online-only players who did well in tournaments (Latif, Wolfkrone, etc.)

So yea I'd probably change my last statement about how online practice -> tourney results, it probably won't change things much. I've forgotten how online matches reward gimmicky play and how they are set up, adaptations are rarely tested. Dedication is still the #1 and most important factor.

Stubbornness and old people ruining e-sports I caught the first one and missed this one, but yeah local government is pretty frustrating. No matter how ideal the venue is, Watts needs to move on and find a new spot. Not only will it never work out here but fuck that place, get out regardless. Local govt so corrupt and stupid lol, this example just hits a little closer to home since it's about a subject we care about.

On a side note, it's funny as a melee player that the entire game is basically spamming 1f links from pretty much a ton of combos to just basic moving around But because everyone pretty much exclusively plays offline people just get good/used to it and suddenly it's all handy dandy and normal
