Plinking feels weird even though it's second nature to me at this point. That and kara-inputs feel like they manipulate the engine in an unintended way. Trying to explain what plinking and kara-inputs are to a player who is still learning is basically impossible and requires full knowledge of how the engine operates. I don't see it in the same light as multiple building selection in SC2 because that was a conscious design decision, though it is similar in that it smooths out the learning curve and is an overall quality-of-life improvement. The input change feels more like a bug fix to an issue that everyone in the community adjusted to, closer to stacking Mutas with an Overlord or floating a building over a Missile Turret in BW -- you know it's probably not intended to happen, but if you can do it you have an advantage and you assume everyone at the top level knows how to do it and works around the fact that their opponents have that same knowledge.

One of the dumbest things in SF4 is seeing someone eat a reversal because their execution wasn't good enough due to misplinking. It doesn't feel good for the player who dropped the combo because they've done it a thousand times before. It doesn't feel good for the player doing the reversal because they feel they lucked out. I think the input buffer change is a welcome one because game results are going to come down to intended decisions more often than they already do (which is a lot), impacting the game positively overall.

Online means a lot if that is the mode most people will be playing a majority of the time.

Persona 4 Arena has a 5 frame buffer and there are still some differences in online and offline play. It helps but it's still there. Honestly, it kinda feels like the Street Fighter crowd is the only one that holds up 1 frame links on a pedestal. It won't make it any less competitive if they aren't in the game.

1 frame links are utterly stupid in any world with internet that obeys the laws of physics. I'm glad they're doing this.

Practicing and doing 1f links are fun though! In decent scenarios internet wise it isn't that hard to be consistent even when you don't plink. I think it is for the better though that they're going to be gone. They require too much training to be consistent and don't really require thought or cool execution. I hope that difficult execution still exists, more along the lines of fierce feint fierce.

Guess we won't see players like Daigo drop 1f links anymore lol

1f links falls under execution, and if you main any execution-heavy characters (such as E.Ryu) you need a vibrant local scene to improve under zero lag/tournament conditions. Japan's biggest advantage is that most of the best players are situated right in Tokyo (with exceptions such as Pugera’s Ibuki), so they get a lot of high level practice that’s easily accessible. Whereas big places like the states we have to send our players coast to coast just to compete.

And contrary to Kazunoko’s answer to Mike Ross’s question at the end of CEO 2015, I don’t think NA/EU has caught up to Japan just yet. The Japanese are pretty good at lying as to not hurt anybody’s feelings, as anyone who watches Iron Chef can attest to (celebrity sponsors of challengers will always say outright their challenger will beat the Iron Chef, even though they stand no fuking chance in hell).

With this change, online practice will more likely translate into tournament results (Edit: Probably not as there are other factors involved). Maybe we'll see more NA and EU players step up their game just from the sheer number of players.

Playing online isn't bad practice at all, that's a myth. I don't think this 3 frame buffer idea is going to change anything as far as online/offline perception, the real problem is how people play, not the environment they play in. Most people online are playing one game matches, and also failing to seek out the best players. Why look for the best players, when the game rewards you for stomping bad players to get more points? Why work on improve past one-time gimmick strategies, when you are playing 1 game matches with strangers who you'll never see again?

The kinds of players who go to tournaments and local gatherings, also tend to be the people who are more dedicated to the game in general. They tend to be better players, but that has nothing to do with online vs offline practice. If local scene is essential for becoming a top player, then how do you explain Infiltration/Gamerbee/Xian/etc.?

There are many examples of online players who also do well offline. That includes most top players (Daigo, Sako, Poongko, Infiltration, etc.) and many former online-only players who did well in tournaments (Latif, Wolfkrone, etc.)

I said characters with 1f's are more dependent on the local scene, obviously there are exceptions so I'm not going to pretend it's 100%. Playing online is still gives you a chance to practice what you picked up, though in a nonoptimal fashion. Then there's fundamentals and game knowledge, you can use characters who don't rely on 1f combos and do well in any environment.

So yea I'd probably change my last statement about how online practice -> tourney results, it probably won't change things much. I've forgotten how online matches reward gimmicky play and how they are set up, adaptations are rarely tested. Dedication is still the #1 and most important factor.

Links are probably the least interesting / most obnoxious form of execution, behind maybe only the 5xP/K inputs. I won't miss them. Dropped links add nothing to the game but the feeling of "I got robbed" as a player and "Daigo got robbed" as a spectator imo.

More importantly....

EVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
anyone going that plays sf4 / marvel / kof / gg xrd / tekken / 1v1 Luna or just wanna shoot the shit with more TLers hit me up :D :D :D I know a few folks who'll be there but its always fun to meet more.

I caught the first one and missed this one, but yeah local government is pretty frustrating. No matter how ideal the venue is, Watts needs to move on and find a new spot. Not only will it never work out here but fuck that place, get out regardless.

Local govt so corrupt and stupid lol, this example just hits a little closer to home since it's about a subject we care about.

This is it. Evolution 2015, the premiere fighting game tournament - the Superbowl of fighting games - is happening this weekend. Every year, Evo is the most massive and exciting fighting game tournament. While this year it has had competition in CEO 2015 and the upcoming Capcom Cup Finals next winter, Evolution is still the supreme event -- and the one with the greatest pedigree.

But I don't need to tell you that. I don't need to tell you anything. I just need to tell you when it's happening.

Notable entrants:
  • Everyone in the world

Seriously. Just go to the "Notable Tournament Players" section in the OP if you want to do some reading.

Schedule for USF4 at Evolution 2015 is as follows:

Sunday 19th of July

Hyped for evo!

On a side note, it's funny as a melee player that the entire game is basically spamming 1f links from pretty much a ton of combos to just basic moving around
But because everyone pretty much exclusively plays offline people just get good/used to it and suddenly it's all handy dandy and normal
