So I've had SSF4 for the PS3 for a while but I never really got into it which was my intention after I watched EVO2011. I bought a stick but I never really liked the feel off it so I just ended up selling it. Now I picked up AE on the steam sale and got myself a Madcatz SSF4 Fightpad and I really like it so far. I'm just curious on how to play to become somewhat decent? I don't wanna be the next Daigo but I wanna be able to win like 50% of games online or something. I really like Viper after watching Kayopolice at EVO2011 so I've kinda started to learn all the moves etc. Any advice on how to improve? Other than play play play I've been trying to figure out how to cancel but I just don't understand it. The command list for example seismic I think it's something like move + light punch to cancel but I'm never able to cancel it and she just does the move. Any guide or anything would be great

Any guide or anything would be great I don't know about Vipers feint cancelling, but if you want to improve just pick a BnB combo (something like cr.fp xx ex seismo followed up by SJC BK or mp TK) and do it over and over in training mode. Then go online and try to land it as often as possible. Eventually you will feel confident enough to move on and practice the next thing.

The 360 versions should be compatible with PCs if you download the xbox controller plugin thing, but the PS3 versions are more difficult.

All her cancels are done by pressing two punch buttons after you begin the move, and you can cancel any strength. You can cancel only before a certain point in the move. Seismos for example can only be canceled before her arm drops down toward the ground.
Viper is also an incredibly difficult character because super jump canceling is another core element of her play, and that's something that most of the cast doesn't have. Really if you learn Viper you're learning a very specific style that doesn't translate to other characters. Many players even go as far as to say she doesn't feel like a Street Fighter character at all (and same with El Fuerte). She has a high execution barrier because if you can't do cancels and superjump cancels on demand every time you are hindering yourself. Rather than going toe-to-toe with other characters through footsies and pokes, she revolves around advanced mixups and mind games. She also has low health (900 compared to most characters' 1000) which means you are punished more heavily when you mess something up.
I highly recommend a basic character such as Guile, Balrog, Ryu for learning the game. Guile and Ryu will teach you about controlling space, and Balrog about movement, footsies, and simple combos.

each variant of viper's seismo/uppercut cancels have different rhythms. by that i mean the delay between the move and pressing the two buttons for the cancel. what i did was go to training mode and practice until your fingers gain the muscle memory of the cancel rhythm (cr.f seismo cancel cr.f into seismo combo is important to learn)

that's misleading, if you do the cancels as fast as possible they can all be done with the same timing, there's just varying degrees of leniency between them

Thanks for the tip about Ryu etc I do play him aswell since I've been off and on SF since the 90's but I feel everyone and their mom plays him so I wanna try Viper I managed to cancel a few times but it's just super random haha. I just try to cancel as quickly as I see the animation and that the combo worked. Well can't become Daigo in a day!

Adon, Ibuki, c viper, and rufus. I mained Sagat back when sf4 originally launched but I'm really wanting to learn one of these rushdown type characters, especially after seeing gamer bee dominate so hard at evo haha. I already realize c viper is probably the hardest to pick up out of these but still. Adons pretty easy, almost nothing to learn execution wise afaik. Ibuki/Viper both pretty hard to learn execution wise. Rufus seems fairly simple to get down to a reasonable level altho hes probably the rarest character online for whatever reason, so maybe he has problems online *shrug*. Adons definitely the easiest unless theres some element to his game im forgetting about momentarily, his combos are all really basic and hes 90% footsies/being an annoying prick :o). Viper and likely Ibuki too will take alot of effort to get consistent with. Adon isn't easy at all. A lot of his game is based on instant air jaguar kicks. Executing them is one thing, but actually doing them at the right time/spacing and to punish your opponents actions is muuuuch harder. He's got hard links and his bnb (cr.lk, cr.lp xx lk RJ fadc U2/mk RJ) will be tough to execute for a new player. Rufus has a straight-forward playstyle but dont let that fool you. His BnB is a 1-frame link, so you'll need a lot of patience to practice that sufficiently. If you are confident with linking he's the way to go. Ibuki and Viper are definitely the hardest out of the four execution wise. Every character in the game has something about them that needs to be learned, Adon no exception. I would definitely argue that the elements of his game you mentioned there are not that tricky compared to some things half the cast need to also learn to be remotely competent at their character. Also, generally Adon is pretty safe mashing the shit out of air jaguar kick at certain ranges unless he gets really predictable with his timing. Not everybody can do Infiltration demons on reaction to it being done. From everything I see Gamerbee do, he has a hitconfirm bnb, a 'big punish' fierce(?) into jaguar kick, and his bnbish fadc ultra. Thats pretty basic as far as character combo variety goes. I agree that theres easy and hard parts about most (if not all) characters. Adon, however, doesn't really have anything easy going for him apart from his godly normals and walkspeed. Adons BnB is tricky because you actually have to hitconfirm the direction you hold the stick from the first hit in order to get the correct special at the end - forwards for RJ, backwards for JK. This is very easy to mess up and will lead to many whiffs unless you practice it a lot. Jaguar kicks are a lot easier to punish than you make it sound. The best way to punish them for most characters is by causing them to whiff, which creates a huge opening for them. This makes them almost as unsafe as a DP without the opportunity to fadc. That's why you don't see high level Adons use JK too often. Sure his stuff isnt as tricky as SJCs, but it's definitely not easy. I haven't even mentioned his fuzzy guard setups, which are his highest damage/stun dealers and have to be done different for most of the cast.
Fair enough, im honestly not too knowledgable about Adon (which is why I probably would list him as one of my worst matchups). Good info to know. :o)

Im not 100% but he might be referring to doing feints from normals, so like say cr.mp xx fierce tk feint or cr.hp xx fierce tk feint. Ive definitely spent alot of time getting used to the timing of pressing the feint from different types of normals, theres alot of variety in how long you need to wait after the cancelled tk input before you press the feint. For raw tk feints then yeah, mashing it as fast as you can will always work (so long as you dont go too fast and make it EX, which is nigh impossible) and the harder the button the smaller the window.

Protip for playing Viper: have a button with the PPP macro
And apparently it's too tough to do some comboes with Oni so until I have my stick I'll just play with mister easymode no difficult skills or comboes (Akuma)
Oh that reminds me, Evil Ryu is really similiar to Akuma. It's too bad that his footsies are so subpar and especially that crouching MK, he hits like a truck.

c.mk is like E.Ryu's best poke. Great range, true block string into fireball, can lead into fireball fadc bnb The only problem is that its slow which means you have to learn when to use it and better spacing but it should still be his primary footsie tool.

That must have been a lot of practice ^_^. My vote for hardest character to play at a somewhat competitive level goes to viper. I have lots of respect for people that main her. Her style is so fun to watch as well.

So I connected my ps3 controller to my pc using the motionjoy drivers. It feels very different from the keyboard, but I think I will stick to the ps3 controller. Some moves were actually easier on the keyboard for example the shoryuken took some time getting used(the Z motion), but I feel it's a lot easier to link stuff together because it's feels smoother on the stick as opposed to thinking what buttons you should press and in what order.
there is so much to learn o.0! I'm currently getting beaten by the pc lololol(I can beat it by spamming stuff..but thats not the point) Reminds of brood war when the pc would beat me and I would rage at it for cheating :p

Downloading off Amazon since it's so cheap right now just $10 and I had a $5 Amazing gift card sitting around. I had to sign up for a US address at viaddress.com since I'm in Canada. viaddress seems to have mixed reviews online for shipping packages but for digital downloads that doesn't matter.
I'm brand new to fighting games other than mashing some buttons like 10 years ago.

nah, that is just unnecessary and probably a bad idea since it's just better to get use to hitting two buttons for feints. personally, I'm a purist and I can't imagine playing this game with more than six buttons.
The only use for the 7th and 8th buttons is to set it as SELECT to fake out a mash. lol

This is going to be incredibly newbie, but I'm playing Ibuki and my buddy is Ryu. and there's this annoying stunt he keeps doing where he'll get me on the ground and then if I don't wake up "shoryuken", he'll grab me.
If I do it, he just backs up and then come back and grabs me.
and it constantly repeats the whole time, I can't seem to figure out what to do.

Try wakeup backdash or a crouch throw tech and you should be able to react if he tries to walk forward again for a throw. Or if you must uppercut you could try throwing a kunai to help you land safer.
