I played the beta for a while but stopped several months ago because my computer just doesn't run it well enough to make it fun. I played T1 and T2 religiously though, so I'm a bit sad that I can't play the game on a smooth system.
Is the game improving a lot? I liked what I played during beta, but I felt there were a lot of improvements that could be made.

A few people have stated that granade launcher is superior to arx buster. Anyone care to explain why? I still haven't unlocked it and 42k is kind of a lot.

Generally the grenade launcher is better for one simple reason; it gives you the option to bounce the grenades off of walls, giving you more versatility with placing shots. That way you are able to hit enemies behind walls while in the same time being covered or hidden from enemy fire. Offcourse this option only exists in closed areas so the grenade launcher is better when assaulting generators. In the open, they are more or less the same.
I dont think this summs up the reasons why the grenade launcher is better, but its the only one i heard of so far.

Its improving, but as someone who played T1 and T2 as well, it isn't going the right way. Jetting and regens needs some tweaking. u notice in arena how bad this jetting physics are. However In ctf u don't mind that much cause u don't need to duel much either.

Its far better for clearing a flag stand due to the splash. You shouldn't be using projectiles while dueling anyways, so you may as well use the best clearing weapon on the raider.

If you hate individual base assets, the arx is still better for killing those. Otherwise the GL with 5 ammo clip is really the best choice indoors and around the stand.

Can someone explain just what the role of the soldier is supposed to be? From reading this thread it sounds like raider is better for offense and the heavy classes are better for defense, pathfinder is better for capping, so what's a soldier to do?

Soldier can really do anything, he can switch between roles really fast because he is so flexible. He is quite good for stand D since he is more mobile than a HOF when the stand is getting spammed. It can be fun to run super heavy as soldier and fly up to body block cappers for instance. Soldier are usually used over the raider for D as well, mostly because they have an instant explosive splash weapon for the stand (thumper) and the AR for chaining people out.

Soldier can't really play offense. They're really only viable for home D. They can't chase but they can sure as hell kill shit.

You can play offense on pubs.

Can anyone link me to VODs of good comp matches? I only saw ZfZ vs Tao and that series was one sided.

Tribescast has a big archive and there's always some good matches in there, but honestly? The casting is pretty bad for Tribes right now. The casters are inexperienced and often talk about irrelevant stuff, the observing is sketchy (bordering on terrible), and worst of all (for me, at least): there's no first person view in spectator mode. I can't tell you how much of a deal breaker that is in this first person shooter.
Oh, also, Tribescast is going live right now with Tao of Tribe vs Icarus. http://www.twitch.tv/tribescast
But mostly, I watch the streams of zoidberg, Titan, and VashEricks of Area 51 Gaming whenever they scrim. zoidberg plays capper, Titan is stay at home D, and Vash is jug/tank, so you get a pretty good view of the entire battlefield. I put all three streams up and listen to them communicate, and it's a lot more fun than watching the map half the game.

I wish a good sentinel would stream . The only one I found was FuryOne but he mostly practices his aim in tdm which is kind of fun but terribly boring to watch.

To be honest,I really don't know how much first person spectate would benefit the viewing experience, watching a Tribes game is almost like watching a football(soccer) match, how much do you really see from only one players first person perspective?
