I've let this game collect dust since just before Back to Karkand, mostly because my poor Australian download quota couldn't deal with 4 gig patches every other week. I think I had most things unlocked at the time, and preferred mid-size infantry/light v. focused conquest. How difficult would it be to get back into the game, considering the amount of DLC I've missed? In particular, are there any required DLC packs? Overpowered DLC-only guns? Does anyone even play on non-DLC servers?

Also would i need to buy it for 59$ seeing that this game is like 2years on now ... -_- Edit: Also what ^ said, some good questions because a fear of mine is spending like 100$ on DLC lol

I only have Back To Karkand, which I got with my limited edition, so I play mostly the non-DLC aussie and nz servers and there is quite a few people on there during peak hours, even without the metro 24/7 ones. Does anyone even play on non-DLC servers? Personally I only have BF3 and Karkand. I suppose at some point I'll get Premium, but right now there is nothing to drive me wild with jealousy. There are definitely plenty of vanilla servers with plenty of vanilla players. One thing to watch out for is servers that rotate onto DLC-only maps, I believe those will kick you if they get to those maps. I think it would be quite easy to get back into the game. Not THAT much has changed, especially on Vanilla maps, just a bit of tweaking with suppression and a few guns. Also there are much less patches than there were before, so that's nice. There are few guns that are pretty good that are DLC only, one that comes to mind is the goddamn shotgun, what is it called... the spas-12. Fuck that one is good, that is one that I would like to get. It also depends on what sort of gameplay you like; if you enjoy, as you suggested, the running around quickly and killing people (like rush or TDM), then from what I've seen, Aftermath and Close Quarters would suit you. But before getting those, I would recommend just trying the game out again, seeing if you like where it is right now, that sort of thing. On December 16 2012 12:06 Obstikal wrote: And the gameplay ?? I play CS because it's tactical and strategic and people just cant go rolf i got x weapon so i run around killing people It all depends on what game mode you choose. I think something that you might like, as CS player, would be rush; there is a specific objective, teamwork allows for huge success, and there is still a great deal of action in close to mid quarters. It also has light vehicle usage, and is a pretty good hybrid between BF3 and other shooters. Then you can always pop into a TDM if you want to have the fast paced rambo shit, or into a Conquest Large for slower paced strategic play. By the way, if either of you care to start playing [again], feel free to add me. Again, I only have vanilla, and like TDM, Rush, and CQ Large, in that order. I'm fairly good, at least in TDM, and would much enjoy playing with any TL members. <3

Controlling recoil in this game is as easy as the P90 in CSGO. You'll learn bad shooting habits from BF3 though, I had to break all of that when I started to play CSGO. @CyDe I've been meaning to play again but I haven't gotten around to taking time out of Halo4/Path of Exile to do so. Once I do start playing again I'll for sure add you!

I do appreciate the work they've done on gun balance. It seems like almost everything is at least usable now, and I've yet to be killed by anything that makes me go "oh, that gun." That's a pretty remarkable achievement, although my opinion may change as I start to get a better feel for it all. I'm a bit disappointed that the M16A3 still seems to be the go-to gun, simply because I really just don't like it. On paper, it looks great, but in my hands it just never seems to shoot where I want. I'm glad to see my old flame the AEK hasn't been nerfed into unusability, and I'm keen to become better acquainted with the AN94.... provided I can get used to its ridiculously obstructive ironsights. About the only thing that really annoys me is the buffed suppression, and, by extension, the semiauto rifles. They're not OP at all, but it does seem hard to take them on at range without a sniper of my own. I feel like my AR bullets should at least attempt to intersect with what I shot at, and they stop doing that if I've taken any fire at all. Server selection seems a bit poor over in AU. It seems to mostly be metro 24/7 and a couple of 16 player large vehicle spam games. I'd really prefer something in the middle ground. I'll keep looking. My favourite maps were always Bazaar, Seine and Canals, usually conquest. Rush can be good, but I get fed up with the chokepoint camping that pub games tend to degenerate into. I'm not particularly interested in TDM, and even less in metro; if I wanted total cqc chaos I'd just boot up CoD.

Well public games are a huge chaos most of the time. And good players can do very well with any playstyle. BF3 is not a hyper realistic tactical shooter like some people think it is, the gameplay is just too fast for that but its still a lot more tactical than cod. You have to join a clan with teamspeak and scrim against other clans if you want the more tactical experience out of the game. I just recently joined team symthic after over 1K hours of lonewolfing and can honestly say that it feels like im playing a completely different game. Its really important that you play in a organized team against other organized teams, if you just stack a team in a pubserver with your clanmates the game gets so easy its not even funny anymore. @Belisarius: They nerfed back supression a while ago, its still a little stronger than it was at release but atleast not the sillyness it was after the february patch. The M16A3 is still the undisputed king of competitive play its only real contender is the AEK. The AN94 is the strongest gun in theory but in practice it doesnt really work out that way. In public games though every gun is good when in the hands of a competent player. IMO the semi auto snipers are indeed very strong compared to the rather weak bolt actions, the SKS and M417 also have very good agressive potential. If you are skilled with the AN94 and/or G3A3 though you are going to laugh at snipers using semiautos.

DICE needs to buff the semi-autos and differentiate them from the Assault Rifle-Heavy Barrel combination. Why would anyone use them if the AR-HB combination can provide almost the same setup, except that Assault is infinitely better because of self-healing?

In modes with more players like 8v8cq or 16v16+cq where vehicles are a dominant factor engineers and their rep tools gain importance. Its a huge risk with no guaranteed payoff to give up on a assault or engineer for a support or recon player. Support is even more useless, mortars are not allowed and/or nerfed to oblivion, and c4 is nice and fun in pubs but try to c4 a decent tank/gunner team with proxyscan and a infantry squad protecting them, lol. Another reason why the M16 is so powerfull is that it is glitched, the supression spread increase doesnt apply to it correctly. Its not the only weapon that has this problem but while many of those guns are banned in leagues like the ESL the M16 for some strange reason is still allowed.

I knew the M5K was immune to suppression, but the M16 as well? That's actually pretty dumb.

I've actually been re-inspired to use the AN94 by browsing their forums ![]() I'm afraid of whipping out my AN-94 because I don't know if I can maintain the same accuracy (currently it's around 29%) and I haven't touched it in almost a year. Theoretically, it would be the best weapon IF the second shot exactly places where the first shot hits the enemy. (I believe there is a 0.05 spread between the shots). My changes to Assault would be to eliminate self-healing with healing packs/change the rate of healing to out-of-combat regen as well as increasing the cooldown on revives. I know that I use the self-healing as a crutch in Assault when playing aggressively. Support is bad because they have zero gadgets that are useful. Ammo bag is useless as you're more likely to be dead than running out of ammo, or just swap kits with the enemy since they would most likely have the same setup. C4 is terrible in competitive, so is the mortar being useless. Claymores are not useful since one can revive after blowing it up. Recon is terrible for the exact same reasons, especially if Spawn Beacon is banned. TUGS/MAV are good, but it's a small area and a one-time use. You can't expect to keep picking it up and moving it. Also, the disadvantages of running a SMG/Battle Rifle/Bolt-Action is too much compared to an Assault with an M16/AEK-971/M416. Also, I saw the most hilarious thing yesterday...a Mortar killing the Jet Pilot.
